The Backstory - Our culture versus her body
play

11/09/21 • 34 min

A safety pin can protect the baby against evil spirits. Prolonged labour means she cheated on her husband. Swollen feet? She must be having a male child. Her age doesn’t matter as long as she is physically big enough to bear children.

These are just a few cultural beliefs that Dr. Babatunde Adewumi shared with us in this episode. Some of these beliefs are harmless, some are helpful, but most are dangerous and are contributing to Nigeria’s high maternal mortality ratio.

The Backstory - Drug addiction is not about the drugs
play

09/21/21 • 33 min

In the 1970s the United States had a drug abuse problem so they launched a war on drugs. The belief was that the availability of drugs like marijuana, heroin, and cocaine lead to addiction. So, the argument went, if you get rid of drugs, you’ll get rid of addiction. Right? Wrong. In this episode, we review the research and interview a recovering addict to understand why drug abuse and addiction are not about the drugs. What does this mean for Nigeria’s emerging drug abuse problem?

The Backstory - About Afghanistan

About Afghanistan

The Backstory

play

08/17/21 • 22 min

On Sunday, August 15th, the world woke up to the news that Afghanistan is once again under the control of the Taliban. The US and other allied nations have been withdrawing troops from Afghanistan since February 2020 and analysts had predicted that the Taliban would probably take over at some point. But the speed at which it happened shocked just about everyone.

In this episode of The Backstory, we’ll remind you why the United States got into Afghanistan in the first place and how they found out, like the rest of us, that the Taliban is very much still a force to be reckoned with.
