Rewind & Review Ep 73 - Spaceballs (1987)

In 1987, maybe four years too late, Star Wars and other sci-fi films were parodied in grand Jewish glory. Co-written, produced, and directed by Mel Brooks, this space opera satire became a cult classic and is now considered to be one of Mel Brooks’ most popular and well-known films. Spaceballs celebrates its 35th anniversary! Heroic mercenary Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his alien sidekick Barf (John Candy) rescue Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of Druidia and her droid, Dot Matrix (voiced by Joan Rivers), from being captured by the Spaceballs – an alien race led by President Skroob (Mel Brooks), who want to use Vespa as ransom to obtain Druidia’s air for their own planet. However, the heroes get stranded on a desert moon, where they encounter the wise Yogurt (also Mel Brooks), who teaches Starr about the metaphysical power known as “the Schwartz”. Meanwhile Spaceball commanders Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) and Colonel Sandurz (George Wyner) lead the search for them, but are hindered by their own incompetence.
