EP89 - Masters Of The Universe (1987)
Retro Ramble
07/29/22 • 75 min
In this month's episode, Charlie and George are off to Eternia (but only briefly for budget reasons) to review the cult curiosity that is Masters of The Universe!
It's a nostalgic trip back as the brothers reminisce about the toys and one of George's first cinema outings! They discuss how the toyline behemoth became one of Cannon Film's most expensive productions, as well as casting, creative accounting and liberally borrowing from bigger (and better) blockbusters. There's plenty to discuss in Suspicious Spin Offs, from aborted sequels to faltering reboots. Good journey!1 Listener

EP69 An American Werewolf In London 1981
Retro Ramble
10/30/21 • 52 min
In this month's episode, it's time for another Halloween special, with Charlie and George heading from the Yorkshire Moors to revisit An American Werewolf in London! In celebration of the horror comedy's 40th anniversary, the brothers discuss 80s London, some very surreal nightmare sequences and groundbreaking make up and special effects! As usual there's some alternate casting in coulda woulda shoulda as well as Suspicious Spin Offs. But remember, beware the moon, stick to the road and stay off the Moors!
EP#37 - Robocop (1987)
Retro Ramble
07/24/19 • 81 min
In this month's episode, Charlie and George visit the gritty suburbs of Old Detroit to discuss the future of law enforcement, Robocop! This time, they've got company as they are joined by Ben from TopFilmTip!
During the episode the three delve into director Paul Verhoeven's scathing satirical sci-fi to discuss lovable villains, robo-resurrections and the correct way to start a petrol explosion (though we strongly advise against doing so).
As usual, there'll be some standard production chat around the creation of the iconic Robocop suit, a brief Coulda Woulda Shoulda and some very Suspicious Spin-Offs. We'll buy that for a dollar!
Ben can be found at TopFilmTip on Twitter and is also an author with his first novel, Winner Winner, a young adult science fiction story that includes many a reference from the films we cover here on Retro Ramble.
Enjoy and please share!

Retro Ramble
01/18/18 • 41 min

From the impressive character acting of Pat Morita that earned him an Oscar nomination to New Jersey wide-boy Ralph Maccio to the Nazi-inspired blonde looks of the Cobra Kai there is plenty the boys delve into from their most recent viewing.

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
My brother Charlie and I are very close despite living in different countries. We'd speak on the phone every few weeks, we would always talk about films. This made me think, "What if we were to record these chats and turn them into a podcast?" We grew up watching a huge range of films, and we would always lament that the current blockbuster landscape had changed, that the 1980s and 1990s were a magical time for movies. What made them so great? Did they still hold up?!
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
"We aim to entertain" is our slogan, and we always emphasize that our podcast is a fun and light-hearted take on the films of our youth! On each episode, we make sure to include a good amount of production trivia so that our listeners can learn something new about the movies we discuss. Our hope is that this will inspire people to revisit these films and enjoy them once again!
Which episode should someone start with?
To be honest, the first few episodes are a bit scrappy with not the best audio! I feel we found our feet by Episode 9 - Batman as we found a formula that worked; a mix of production trivia, film review, nostalgia and humour. I'm a huge Batman fan, and as the film spent a decade in development and went on to become such a cultural phenomenon, there was a lot to discuss!
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
With over 100 episodes now, it's a hard choice! We've been lucky to have some guests join us over the past few years, which allows for a different dynamic - so Highlander (with documentary producer Andy Hughes), Timecop (with the hosts of the Spocklight podcast) and Dirty Dancing (with our sister, Sophia) were all great fun to make. We always have fun with the big action heroes; Arnie, Stallone and Jean Claude Van Damme, as it allows us to indulge in some bad impressions!
Which episode are you most proud of?
A lot of the films we cover mean a lot to people and we want to do the best job possible. Everyone's taste in films differs, but I think the films that had the most challenging productions usually make entertaining episodes. The film Total Recall (Episodes 67/68) had a very interesting journey to the big screen, with some crazy sequel ideas that sadly never happened. There was so much to discuss, we ended up splitting it into two episodes!
What is your vision for your show?
We'd love to feature more guests on the podcast, whether it's other podcasters who have an interest in 1980s/1990s films or people who have worked on these films! We'd love to do some video reviews but we currently we are too stretched for time!
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
It's a hard choice - it's like choosing your favourite film! For fellow film podcasts, I enjoy Film Stories, Films to Be Buried With, Unspooled and How Did This Get Made. For non-film podcasts, Smartless, Off Menu and Adam Buxton are also really entertaining, with some great celebrity guests.
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
Our original name was Brothers In Armchairs until we discovered a Youtube gaming channel with the same name! We created a spreadsheet and played around with many word combinations for discussing films but we also wanted some flexibility with a name, in case we wanted to cover TV and video games - which "Retro" perfectly covered. We also wanted to reflect an honest, light-hearted approach, hence the "Ramble" part and I always think little alliteration is more memorable and fun!
