Fairly Legal: Is Fairly Legal Fairly Relevant? - Part 2

The USA show "Fairly Legal" is stirring up the mediation field. Whether you think it is a travesty of the professional mediation field, or the best thing that's happened to mediation since Getting to Yes, the fact is this show is pushing our buttons. Let's take a closer look at how this show is portraying mediators, what's true, what isn't, and what we wish were true. This series is NOT a documentary but an entertainment show. We want to take the opportunity to educate the public by pointing out the fiction and highlighting the facts about what mediator's really do in their practices and how mediation can be a very viable resource to resolving conflict between parties. My special co-host, Zena Zumeta and I will dialogue with Clare Fowler, author of the Fairly Legal Blog and the Editor at Mediate.com , Rita Callahan, a Conflict Resolution and Collaboration Consultant along with Jeff Thompson, a mediator and law enforcement detective from NYC as we talk about the truths of mediation, and dispel the myths of mediation as played out by fictional character Kate Reed, sexy mediator extraordinaire. For more information on go to Fairly Legal, Zena Zumeta Medation and Contact Clare Fowler

Handling Stress After a Traumatic Event

Sometime in our lives we will unfortunately witness or be impacted by a traumatic event. We hear about these situations in the media all of the time...a very disgruntled employee who kills their boss and then commits suicide; witnessing the terrorist attacks of the World Trade Center towers; a bank teller who is robbed at gun point; a bus accident involving the death of children; or a natural disaster like that of the recent earthquakes and tsunami that hit Japan. All of these situations create what is called critical incident stress. We bring the topics of stress management and emotion management as part of National Stress Awareness month. And tonight, we focus on stress and trauma whether it is in the workplace or in your personal lives. We will talk with Denise Thompson with Crisis Response Consulting, about how you can identify the signs and signals of this kind of traumatic stress; and mechanisms for coping during these difficult times. Denise Thompsonis the founder and owner of Crisis Response Consulting, a graduate of Florida State University, a licensed clinical social worker and a Lt Col in the Air Force Reserves. Recently she served 8 years of active duty, including 2 deployments following September 11, 2001. Denise has also provided crisis intervention and organizational consultation following airplane and helicopter crashes, homicides, suicides, line-of-duty deaths, man-made and natural disasters, robberies and combat.
