Denise R. Russo – Finding the Center of Your Purpose
Take Control of Your Career
12/09/21 • 24 min
Denise R. Russo is Global VP, Head of Customer Enablement & Readiness at SAP for CE&X Success Centers; Executive Coach; Leadership Expert; and Forbes Contributor.
In this episode Lauren and Denise discuss:
Finding and understanding your deeper purpose as a leader and in the everyday moments
Leveraging HR and coaching skills to support customers and put your feet in the shoes of those you are serving
The Great Resignation and how you can determine what you really want in the next phase of your career
The concept of ikigai (生き甲斐), pronounced ee-kee-gah-ee, which means "reason for being.”
Key takeaways:
As a coach and leader, it’s important to be a good listener; ask good questions; both know and show others the way; and be able to relate to other’s thoughts/ideas even if they differ from your own.
It’s up to you to determine the things that matter most to you and you should evaluate the conditions around you to achieve growth.
You can always pursue a new path and take the steps forward with the option to turn back.
Drawing on ikigai can help you feel centered and define your purpose based on four elements in the work setting – things that you are good at; things that you love doing; things that change the world; and things you can get paid for.
“Life is all about continuous learning.” – Denise Russo
“Diversity is what makes us different, inclusion is what makes us the same... at the end, it should be around how do we belong and how do we belong on this Earth and in this world together.” – Denise Russo
“There’s a difference between being the best in the world and being best for the world and I’m hoping that my legacy will be that I can be known as somebody who is for the world and for people” – Denise Russo

Bernie Frazier – Overcoming Barriers to Achieve Success
Take Control of Your Career
12/02/21 • 30 min
Bernie Frazier is a career coach at IMPACT Group; prior recruiter; and author of Your Success Is in You!: Empowering and Equipping You to Create Your Best Career Ever!
In this episode Lauren and Bernie discuss:
Owning your own career success
Interview strategies
The negotiation process
How to work with internal recruiters as a job seeker, their role in helping you achieve your career goals, and how candidates can work through a recruiter to receive other opportunities
Key takeaways:
Determining what you want in your career is the foundation to achieving help from a career coach.
If your goal is to be on the revenue-generating side of the business, you must be careful in how you select opportunities and understand what is required to get you there.
Candidates should approach a job search by thinking like the person you are targeting, not by focusing on what sounds good to you.
For individuals to set themselves apart as a candidate, they should connect with a recruiter and create a relationship by understanding the recruiters needs and offering referrals to other candidates for jobs that may not be a good fit – this will make them want to help the candidate out as well.
Practice before interviews to ensure that you have quality answers to questions in a succinct manner.
Make sure to provide examples focused on your personal efforts (instead of team efforts) and talk about results of your actions to showcase the impact that your efforts had.
For negotiations, make sure that you are compensated adequately based on skills that you bring to the table and complete research to gain understanding of fair compensation.
“Act like a candidate, think like a recruiter.” – Bernie Frazier

How to use LinkedIn while employed for personal brand strategy, networking, etc.
Your digital footprint and why it is important to employers
Best practices for accepting connection requests
Key takeaways:
Having a great LinkedIn profile is foundational for, if and how people think of you.

Be selective when accepting connections. Connect with people who are doing what you want to do, who know people that you would want to know, and who are in your community of stakeholders.
Make sure that you have a great profile by including a headshot as profile photo, background banner, and keywords throughout based on job advertisements.
Provide a synopsis of your current and past professional experience, be sure to explain what you enjoy about your position.
Scroll through your newsfeed every day; like and comment on as many posts as you can.
“If we think of ourselves in our job search as a product, people are doing their research, and LinkedIn ranks really highly. It is that important.” – Karen Tisdell
“Nobody wants to be the person or the friend that only calls when they need something or want something from you. It’s so important to ensure that you are constantly looking at how you show up on platform and how you develop those relationships ... the better the friendships and relationships that I have around me, the luckier I am in my career and my success.” – Karen Tisdell

Kelly Hoey – Connect for Success
Take Control of Your Career
11/04/21 • 25 min
Kelly Hoey is a networking expert and author of Build Your Dream Network: Forging Powerful Relationships in a Hyper-Connected World
In this episode Lauren and Kelly discuss:
- Investing in your own career development as well as building a network in your industry
- Differences between men and women’s network structure
- Relying on your network during a career change
- How to connect with and remind your network about the value that you add to an organization
- The best way to stay connected with your network when you are going about your daily life
- Networking mistakes
- Strategies in utilizing the various social media platforms for networking
Key takeaways:
- Taking risks in the form of new opportunities can be a great way to advance your career, especially if you have a strong network to fall back on in case things don’t work out.
- Men and women have different network structures, and both are important. Women typically use a narrow but deep network based on communication where they invest a lot of time in getting to know people, while men use a broad shallow network based on activity that doesn’t have same depth in getting to know people.
- When creating a pitch, craft a short intro sentence followed by a pause to allow the other person to speak and say, “tell me more”. Focus on breaking up your information during delivery to allow the chance for dialogue/conversation.
- Be sure to follow up with people in your network that have offered mentoring/guidance; provide them with updates on your career journey so that they feel appreciated and so you can reach back out to them in the future, if needed.
- Continue to connect with your network periodically through posting/sharing information; commenting on other’s posts; remembering birthdays; sending holiday cards; etc.
- Think of online networking the same as in-person networking and use each based on context.
“By following up and following through, you are moving a relationship that might have been a one-and-done into a mentor relationship or strong sponsor situation.” – Kelly Hoey
“Realize that your daily life activities are part of your networking toolkit. If we only think of networking as an activity we pick up because we are in a job search, that can be very alienating to people if you only show up when you need something.” – Kelly Hoey

Juanita Ingram – Rewriting Your Story
Take Control of Your Career
10/21/21 • 37 min
Juanita Ingram is a corporate attorney turned film producer who has accompanied her husband during multiple relocations around the world.
In this episode Lauren and Juanita discuss:
Transitioning to life as an accompanying spouse
The international family experience, its associated struggles, and suggestions on how to make it a successful experience
and overcoming the grief that comes with a relocation and change of identity
The unique experience of being a black expatriate in a global setting
The challenges and rewards of a dual career relationship
Key takeaways:
Look at international assignments as an opportunity and not a burden; take the time to discover or rediscover new things about yourself.
Before making the transition, leverage relocation companies and support that you can receive. Also, sit down and ask yourself what the move means for you – Where do you see yourself in the country and in the move? What kinds of things have you been wanting to do but haven’t been able to?
Give yourself permission to mourn the trajectory you thought your life was on; get a life coach, counselor, or someone that will help you manage the transition and see new opportunities.
A vision board can help you have a visual manifestation of a goal while offering inspiration and guidance.
International assignments can challenge dual career relationships, but also make them stronger – make sure to discuss what each spouse’s role will be during the assignment.
“Being abroad allowed me to expand the horizon and the scope of what I could do as an attorney. It allowed me to take a moment to discover other talents or really to reinvest in talents that I already had that I was just too busy to invest in because I was too busy adulting.” – Juanita Ingram (3:15)
“As expats or accompanying talent... we have the beautiful opportunity to really thrive and flourish and discover or rediscover new things about ourselves that we may have put a pin in for another time.” – Juanita Ingram (4:11)
“Anytime life gives you the opportunity to pause – whether it’s an international move and a career shift, or a pandemic, whatever the case may be – It gives you the opportunity to really take stock and take inventory.” – Juanita Ingram (7:32)
“Give yourself permission to mourn the trajectory that you thought you were on, and it’s ok. So often, we think we have to smile and act as though we didn’t want what we gave up. It’s ok and it doesn’t mean that you aren’t going to love where you are going, you aren’t going to love the rewrite of your life, you aren’t going to love where you are emerging from... allow yourself to fully close that chapter.” Juanita Ingram (9:11)
“Change your lens to one of seeing opportunity as opposed to seeing what you have so-called given up.” – Juanita Ingram (11:44)
“You never stop being what you are, you just lend your talents to other things.” – Juanita Ingram (12:27)
“Look at it as an opportunity and not as a burden, because it is that, it is a wonderful opportunity for your family, for yourself... remember that it’s an opportunity for everyone.” – Juanita Ingram (27:38)
“There are so many beautiful things to discover, just take the limits off and get the support that you need and not be shy about it.” – Juanita Ingram (31:21)
“Have a conversation about what does a successful international assignment look like. What are your expectations and what are your roles going to be? Not forever in your marriage, but in this assignment – because they may change once you come out of this assignment.” -Juanita Ingram (34:22)
“What does a successful family unit look like for you and your family? Define it for yourself. You do not have to do what everybody else is doing.” – Juanita Ingram (35:20)

Joanne Rencher – Growth & Transformation
Take Control of Your Career
10/14/21 • 28 min
Joanne Rencher is the CEO and Founder of WGNinHR Consulting and author of the book,
Tough As Nails: Finding Your Voice as a Woman in the Workplace
In this episode Lauren and Joanne discuss:
The different elements of how women find their own voice in the workplace
How you are perceived and how you want to be perceived
The impact that COVID has had on choices people make in navigating their careers
Decluttering your mind to weigh career options and make good decisions
Shifting from fear to facts in making career decisions
Managing imposter syndrome
Key takeaways:
It’s important to lay out your possibilities and think about the steps you will have to take to achieve your goals – separate the WHAT from the HOW to review options and reduce your overall fear.
Stop saying yes to everything. Make sure that you make decisions based on your career goals and intentions while weighing the pros and cons of available options.
Plot out plans for the next 30, 60, 90 days to help you manage transitions and hit milestones.
Find a truth-teller – a coach, spouse, friend, etc. – to help you weigh options and have more fact-based ways to approach conversations.
Open yourself up to being vulnerable with someone you trust and getting feedback that you may not want to hear but need to hear.
Being overprepared in certain areas and closing gaps/being intentional in areas that you don’t know can help you gain confidence, which feeds into a sense of security and crushes feelings of imposter syndrome.
“Dream big but with deadlines.” – Joanne Rencher
“You should get used to the sound of your own voice telling the world how awesome you are.”

Stacy Sherman – Doing Customer Experience (CX) Right
Take Control of Your Career
10/07/21 • 23 min
Stacy Sherman is Director of Customer Experience at Schindler Elevator Corporation and Founder of DoingCXRight
In this episode Lauren and Stacy discuss:
How to leverage the voice of the customer at every interaction to make sure you are making the right decisions to meet their needs
How diversity and inclusion ties into the customer experience
The importance of having champions and mentors that embrace your beliefs or your “why”
The difference between how men and women communicate and what women need to keep in mind to ensure they shine
How individuals can exhibit their passions both in and out of the workplace
Key takeaways:
Customers expect leaders to be approachable and human; take care of them; know their needs; and make them feel valued.
To enhance the customer experience, leaders and employees must remain aware and appreciate the diversity of others to ensure they don’t fall behind.
Having a mentor will help you to build confidence, believe in yourself, know your brand, and define your purpose – you can build upon that to network and grow from individuals within your own company.
By learning the political ways of an organization, the systems and the people, you can leverage your own knowledge and experience to show and tell how your insights are valuable.
Leaders should be in tune with and encourage their employees’ unique needs, this helps build trust and loyalty that leads to employees doing customer experience right, even when the boss isn’t looking.
Women should speak up tactfully when interacting with men who treat them differently in the workplace – by doing it in the right way where people aren’t defensive and can even hear you as helpful.
“Branch out and see opportunities to break silos and work together.” – Stacy Sherman
“Be creative, because that’s what makes you shine... that’s what makes you you.” – Stacy Sherman

The mental health crisis and the importance of giving your mind a break
Default mode network (DMN) and supporting neuroscience research
