Style Your Life

Joshua Spodek

What are your daily habits?

Joshua Spodek PhD MBA is a three-time TEDx speaker, #1 bestselling author of Initiative and Leadership Step by Step, host of the award-winning Leadership and the Environment podcast, and professor at NYU. He holds a PhD in astrophysics and an MBA from Columbia, where he studied under a Nobel Laureate and helped launch a satellite (having emerged from some of Philadelphia’s most dangerous neighborhoods). He left academia to found a venture to market an invention that showed animated images to subway riders between stations. He teaches and coaches leadership and entrepreneurship at NYU and Columbia Business School.

In this episode, Joshua opens the show speaking about the importance of service. Joshua recognizes that the most valuable parts of his life have been of service to others. A positive mindset is critical when providing service to others. However, if you do not have the positive mindset already, you need to start anyway. You have to act to get the mindset, not the other way around.

Focus Your Attention On The Things That Matter Most

What makes you unique?

Adam Mendler is the Chief Executive Officer of The Veloz Group, where he co-founded and oversees ventures across a wide variety of industries: Beverly Hills Chairs, a leading office furniture e-tailer; Custom Tobacco, a one-of-a-kind cigar customization e-commerce platform; and Veloz Solutions, a technology consulting and software development practice. Adam remains active in each portfolio company, providing strategic guidance and support. Adam also provides business thought leadership as a speaker to businesses, universities and non-profit organizations; as the host of the leadership and personal / professional development podcast Thirty Minute Mentors; as an expert regularly cited in national media outlets; and as an advisor, consultant, coach and board member.

In this episode, Adam speaks about how he was so busy counting his money; he didn’t realize the issues in his businesses. Adam and his business partner have ten different ideas, and they wanted to execute all of them. However, they burnt through all of their money and had their backs up against the wall. If Adam and his business partner were going to continue as entrepreneurs, they needed to focus and stop what they were doing. You can’t successfully start ten businesses at the same time. The biggest mistake they made was not having the focus. When you’re a bootstrap business, you need money coming in regularly. They were so busy and distracted that they lost sight of working on the cash flow businesses.
