Stethoscopes and Strollers

La Toya Luces-Sampson MD, PMH-C

Welcome to Stethoscopes & Strollers! I'm Dr. Toya, mom of two, OBGYN, and coach for physician moms. Here, we go beyond the hospital halls, into the messy, magical early years of parenting—think diapers, sleepless nights, and figuring out how to deal with all those unexpected twists and turns.

Every episode, I dive into topics like mental health, the ins and outs of postpartum sex, sorting out childcare, and how having little ones changes your marriage. We’ll talk about getting back to work after baby, the real deal with mom guilt thanks to those tough doctor schedules, what pumping at work is really like, and how to keep all the balls in the air without dropping any. We’re here to get real about the hard choices, like deciding to stop breastfeeding, and so much more. This is a space for focusing on taking care of you, because managing scrubs and swaddles takes a village.
You'll figure out how to ask for and actually accept help, because let’s be honest, getting support is crucial for thriving as both a mom and a doctor.
Just a quick heads-up: while we're all about sharing and supporting, remember this isn’t medical advice. We’re here to connect, share experiences, and grow—together, without the medical jargon. So, grab your coffee or tea, and get ready to dive into those parts of being a physician mom that don't get talked about enough. You're not riding this roller coaster alone, and you definitely deserve all the support you can get.

Tune in to Stethoscopes & Strollers for some real, honest insights and practical tips to make momming a bit easier. It’s time to get the conversation started!

Stethoscopes and Strollers - 21. Dream Big, Doc: Discovering What You Truly Want
play

07/24/24 • 7 min

Text me to ask a question, leave a comment or just say hello!

Hey doc, let's talk about what YOU want. Yeah, you! When was the last time you actually thought about what you want in life?

In this episode, I'm challenging you to reconnect with your deepest desires and dreams. I know, I know - you're thinking, "Dr. Toya, I barely have time to pee, let alone dream!" But hear me out.

We dive into:

• Why knowing what you want is crucial (even if it seems impossible right now)

• How feeling directionless can leave you stuck and unfulfilled

• The power of having a "dream life" vision (trust me, it's game-changing)

• Getting past that "I don't have time" excuse (because we both know that's what it is)

• The unexpected joy that comes from letting yourself dream BIG

I share a story about a client who listened to my "Your Dream Life or Mine" episode (go check it out if you haven't!). Just thinking about her dream life - even though it felt impossible - made her happier than she'd been all week. You deserve that feeling too!

So here's your challenge: Take baby steps to create some thinking time. Maybe it's a 10-minute solo walk, locking yourself in the bathroom (we've all been there), or even folding laundry in peace. Find what works for you.

I want you to dream EXPANSIVELY. Don't worry about the "how" right now. Ask yourself:

• What do I want my life to look like in 5 or 10 years?

• Am I happy with my current practice?

• Have I ever thought about leadership roles? Or maybe leaving medicine altogether?

• What childhood passions have I put on the back burner?

Remember, this is just step one. We'll dive deeper into making these dreams a reality in future episodes. For now, give yourself permission to think and feel the excitement of possibility.

When you're done dreaming, share this episode with another physician mom who needs this reminder. Subscribe to Stethoscopes and Strollers for weekly doses of real talk and inspiration as we navigate this wild ride of medicine and motherhood together.

Let's reclaim our dreams, one intentional thought at a time. You've got this, doc!

Stethoscopes and Strollers - 20. Take the Win: Embracing Yes Without Overthinking
play

07/17/24 • 6 min

Text me to ask a question, leave a comment or just say hello!

Welcome back to *Stethoscopes and Strollers*! In this episode, I discuss the importance of taking the win when it’s presented to you. Often, we can overthink our partner’s responses and miss out on the positive moments. Let’s dive into why embracing a yes, even if it’s not enthusiastic, can make a huge difference in our relationships and mental health.

Episode Highlights:

- Setting the Stage: Picture this: you ask your husband to join a playdate with your son. He hesitates, asks a few questions, makes a face, but then says yes. What’s your reaction?

- Overthinking Yes: Are you like me, questioning his reluctance, wondering if he really wants to go, or feeling hurt by his lack of enthusiasm?

- The Impact of Expectations: Wanting our partners to respond exactly how we envision can be unfair and lead to unnecessary tension.

- Choosing the Win: Sometimes, it’s better to take the yes and move on rather than pushing for the perfect response.

Key Messages:

- Understand and Accept: It’s important to recognize that people express themselves differently. Just because the yes isn’t enthusiastic doesn’t mean it’s not genuine.

- Avoid Unnecessary Conflict: Pressing for a specific type of yes can create more conflict and diminish the positive aspects of the agreement.

- Focus on the Positive: Embrace the yes you received and focus on the shared experience rather than the manner in which it was given.

Encouragement for Listeners:

Think about the times you’ve overanalyzed a simple yes. Could accepting it at face value have led to a better outcome? Choosing to accept and appreciate the yes can lead to more harmonious and fulfilling interactions.

Call to Action:

- Share the Episode: If this episode resonates with you, share it with another physician mom who might benefit from this perspective.

- Follow and Subscribe: Don’t forget to follow the show and subscribe on your favorite podcast platform.

Stethoscopes and Strollers - 47. Know Your Worth: How I Made $12K in 24 Hours
play

01/01/25 • 14 min

Text me to ask a question, leave a comment or just say hello!

Hey doc! To kick off 2025, I'm sharing a story on ✨Stethoscopes and Strollers✨ about value, boundaries, and negotiation that will transform how you approach opportunities this year.

We explore:

  • The real value of your time and expertise
  • Why quick "yes" responses cost you more than money
  • How to evaluate opportunities beyond the paycheck
  • Setting boundaries that honor your worth

Key strategies for 2025:

  • Take time before responding to requests
  • Consider the full cost of each "yes"
  • Value your expertise appropriately
  • Ask for what you deserve
  • Remember your worth isn't just about money

This year, let's move beyond the pressure to say yes, the guilt about asking for more, and the doubt about our value. Whether you're negotiating salary, taking extra calls, or managing family commitments, your time and expertise deserve proper recognition.

Doc, make 2025 the year you fully embrace your worth - in medicine and beyond.

Text me to ask a question, leave a comment or just say hello!

Hey there, doc! Ready for a mindset shake-up? In this episode, I'm getting real about my own Instagram struggles and the powerful shift that's changing everything.

We're diving into:

• The sneaky power of "I am" statements (spoiler: they're shaping your reality!)

• My journey from TikTok success to Instagram resistance (oh, the drama!)

• Why positive self-talk feels so darn uncomfortable for us physician moms

• The mindset experiment I'm starting RIGHT NOW (and how you can join in)

I share my own aha moment about how my negative self-talk was sabotaging my Instagram efforts before I even began. Sound familiar? We've all been there!

Here's your challenge: Pay attention to your self-talk this week. What limiting beliefs are you reinforcing? Can you flip them to positive "I am" statements? It might feel silly at first (trust me, I get it), but the results could surprise you.

Remember, what you focus on expands. So let's focus on growth, connection, and spreading our message to the physician moms who need it most.

When you're done listening, share this episode with another physician mom who could use a mindset boost. Follow me on Instagram @drtoyacoaching so we can support each other's growth.
