STEMming in Stilettos with Dr. Toshia - Throwback Episode: Work Life Balance for Women of Color

Throwback Episode: Work Life Balance for Women of Color

STEMming in Stilettos with Dr. Toshia

On this episode we talk through good self care practices for women of color. It is super important that we as minority women take care of ourselves. WE MUST DO IT!!!! We give so much to others, but who gives or pours into us? How are we getting full? We have to take the time to do the things that matter to us and are about us. The times we live in now are perilous and I believe that we need to keep our minds, bodies, and spirits right. I loved the advice we talked about during this episode and I hope that you do also.

Meet Errika Moore: Supporting BIPOC people; The Non-profit Space; and "The Nod"

Episode Main Points:
1) It is vitally important that we are supportive of one another. We still have so much to overcome. All of the "isms" still exist and in this current climate are at the forefront. We must actively and collectively fight them.
2) The work that Errika does to support our students in the K-16 space is super important but it doesn't get a lot of play. She is a connector of people, places, and organizations and what she does is connect people and organizations doing great things for OUR children with people and organizations who have funds and want to see change happen in OUR city and beyond. She's the one in rooms helping form narratives and straightening out ill-formed ones. She is a quiet Superhero in our midst.
3) Can we just talk about "the Nod?" All of us who attended a PWI know what "the nod" is and how important it was to us when we were there. I understand that it looks different from this generation of BIPOC students, however I can tell you that it meant a whole lot to me. Just the acknowledgement of "I see you", was somedays enough to allow me to continue on. The PWI journey can be a lonely one even with friends on campus. It get real tiring to always be the one or one of the few in classes everyday and to fight off microagressions and other stuff.
Errika Moore Bio:
Errika is a nonprofit executive with sales, marketing, organizational management and volunteer leadership experience. She sits on the boards of STEM Learning Ecosystems, The Atlanta Advisory Board, etc. She has specific skills and expertise in optimizing teams and organizational infrastructures, developing strategic relationships and expanding an organization’s sphere of influence to create greater industry alignments and to strengthen their brand. She believes we all have the capacity to be a “catalyst” for bringing people together to solve problems and to create solutions. As a result her mantra is “The Purpose of Life is to Live a Life of Purpose.”

Meet Stephanie Espy: STEM is All Around Us and Giving Ourselves Permission

Episode Main Points:
1) STEM is found all around us. Being in nature and finding science in nature is STEM. Construction, roadwork, our cars, and buildings are all evidence of STEM. The watch on your arm, the chemical in your hair...all STEM. There is no getting around it, STEM is everywhere.
2) Stephanie talks about her journey in this episode and I think its important that you take a real good listen to what she says about taking the time to figure it out. Don't lose yourself to the ideas of others and really taking the time to get clear about your life and where you want to go and what you want to do.
3) Live your life out loud. I love that she has found her passion and its around girls seeing themselves as STEMinists; as women in STEM and that they belong.

About STEM Gems:
With degrees in Chemical Engineering from MIT and UC Berkeley, I have personally experienced the gender gap that exists in the majority of STEM fields where women are severely underrepresented. The STEM Gems book is a product of my own experience and desire to help close the gender gap in STEM.
It features 44 women STEM leaders of today, each with different goals, paths, and aspirations, and each within their own unique STEM field. I strongly believe that girls and young women need female STEM role models to see themselves as scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians. These role models are what I call STEM Gems.
The STEM Gems book gives girls exposure to women doing amazing things in STEM, and gives them the tools to learn how to be STEM Gems themselves. By reading this book, girls and young women will have their pick of role models who offer tangible guidance and advice so that they will begin to see new possibilities that they may have never otherwise dreamed of.
The STEM Gems book is the book I wish I had growing up.
