Walking Around My City After The Destruction, Trying To Understand

06/01/20 • 3 min

StartEdUp Podcast
I'm walking around Indianapolis, the city I've called home all of my life. The destruction and empty feeling is hard. There is a lot I have to learn, and I really need to listen and gain perspective. I got into a conversation with Derrick, who will be my guest on Wednesday's podcast, but in the short conversation I had with him today, I'm feeling like this can be a positive step forward for me, the foundation, and building relationships.

Crucial Conversations: Race, perception, & communication

Jamal & I have conversations every week. This one was difficult. He called me last night and said, "you know what we need to talk about tomorrow." In the fallout of the George Floyd debacle, Jamal reflects on his life, and how he is preparing his son's for life, and interactions with police. I try and unpack my feelings and uneasiness with the situation, especially as I fear this could further tear people apart. While this was an unscripted podcast, we had an honest, open dialogue on fear, healing, and understanding.

Dave Vernier: From Science Teacher to Sensor King

During his 12 years of experience teaching high school physics and physical science, Dave programmed software applications that helped his students see live data and scientific phenomena in real time. Encouraged to share his applications, Dave founded the company with his wife, Christine, almost 40 years ago. Dave received his B.S. in Physics from Ohio State University and his M.S. in General Science from Oregon State University. Dave’s early years of teaching in an underserved school in Cleveland, Ohio, taught him that students gain a deeper understanding of science through a combination of daily demonstrations and highly interactive experiments. It was this discovery that drove Dave to spend his summers trying to come up with new teaching tools to use in the classroom. Dave’s creativity and his passion for science education, combined with the business acumen of his wife and Vernier co-founder Christine, were the driving forces behind the early years of Vernier Software & Technology. Supporting science educators by providing tools that help them teach students more effectively has been a guiding principle at Vernier since the very beginning, and it remains so today.
