And if you are a Leadership Lab Alumni or a former 1:1 client, you’d be a fit for the Leadership Lab+ program that is an intimate group coaching program for women who want an advisory board surrounding them as they build a business of leaders.

63: [On Air Coaching] How to Begin Building Culture Within a Virtual Team with Deb Howard Greenleaf
Stacking Your Team | Leadership Advisor for Women Entrepreneurs
07/09/19 • 36 min
Creating a positive and productive team culture where everyone works well together to achieve business goals is every CEO’s dream. But, what about all of the virtual teams out there? How can you even begin to build the culture that you want within a virtual team?
This is the task set out before Deb Howard Greenleaf, who lives in northwestern Pennsylvania and is the mother of two active swimmers, ages 14 and 18. She runs Greenleaf Accounting Services, providing virtual bookkeeping services to consultants, coaches and other service-based businesses from NYC to LA, taking care of the books so they can grow their firms. When she’s not balancing books or attending her kids’ swim meets, Deb volunteers for local animal shelters and beats back the wilderness in her three-acre yard and gardens.
Although she’s incredibly proud of her team, Deb has realized that the team culture they have isn’t what she had in mind. They’re still coming to her with typical “water cooler” questions and lack the relationship with each other to discuss and solve matters without Deb’s interjection.
So, how can you build the perfect team culture when your team doesn’t work in the same place or even at the same time? This is a tricky one, but Shelli Warren has lots of tips and advice to share with Deb about getting creative and intentional about creating a drumbeat within her team that shifts the narrative and changes how team members interact with each other.
In this episode, you’ll discover:
- How to build a self-sufficient virtual team and close an open-door policy
- Why you should host regular video call meetings with your virtual team
- How to create a sense of shared leadership

There’s nothing better than feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin as you step away from your business for some much-needed rest and relaxation. But before you hit the beach this summer, you should think about bringing a few books along with you.
Those hazy and lazy days of summer can be the perfect time for you to step away from your business and step into a fresh perspective on how and who you lead. You’ve probably heard the saying that ‘knowledge is food for the mind’ and so, it’s no surprise that so many leaders appreciate time alone with a great book while they’re on vacation.
On this episode, Shelli shares five of her favorite books written for leaders of teams. We’re confident that you’re going to find something on this list that will speak to you on a much deeper level than you might anticipate.

As you scale your business and your daily workload becomes too much for one person to handle, it’s time to stack your team. Most business owners start by dipping their toes in and hiring independent contractors. But, as your business continues to grow, should you continue hiring contractors or shift to hiring a team?
This is the dilemma that Jenny Melrose faces as she prepares to step out of overwhelm with help from a team. Jenny is a former reading specialist who “retired” from her teaching career when her blogging income far exceeded her salary. Through hard work and dedication, her lifestyle blog, The Melrose Family, became regularly sought out by nationally recognized brands such as Neutrogena, Smuckers, Glad, Costco, Stanley Steamer, Sara Lee and many more.
She is a content strategist that helps entrepreneurs better understand their messaging and unique position in the online space. Now, she’s combining her passion for teaching with her extensive experience of creating strategic content for online business owners via JennyMelrose.com and her podcast, Influencer Entrepreneurs with Jenny Melrose.
