What if there was a place where men could come to learn how to become better husbands, fathers, and leaders in their community, a place where men could openly talk about their successes and their struggles in their marriages and their lives? In this episode of the Soaring Child, Doug Holt provides that place.

Doug is a father of a beautiful son and daughter and a successful serial entrepreneur who is on a mission to help other businessmen lead their families well. Doug now runs The Powerful Man, with a mission of helping these men save their marriages and become the best men, fathers, and husbands they can be.

In this episode, discover Doug’s advice for both men and women about how to better handle conflict, restore love to a stagnant marriage, and bring that spark back.

Key Takeaways:

"Marriage actually takes a lot of work. It's not just a checkbox thing."

"Men, just as much as women, want that connection."

“Suicide is the #2 cause of death for men.”

"There's a lot of men that are in this lifestyle of quiet desperation, and what they want more than anything is to be an amazing father."

"Often I hear, 'I feel like a stranger in my own home.'"

"The only people I've talked to that have perfect marriages are liars...If you've never had a problem in your marriage, that's a problem."

"You deserve more than average. This is your life...so don't wait for things to happen. Take action."

"Your energy matters when you bring it into the home."

"A wife wants to be seen, heard, and desired."

“Get to know your partner–who they are today. What are their dreams today? What are their fears?...You married this person for a reason.”

Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD - 50: ADHD from a Psychiatric Perspective with Dr. Achina Stein
play

03/30/23 • 40 min

In this episode of the Soaring Child, we are looking at ADHD from a psychiatric perspective, covering topics such as how a child is diagnosed with ADHD, common underlying stressors, dietary changes compared to medication, risks of stimulants, and so much more!

Dr. Achina Stein is a physician, board certified psychiatrist, and has been in practice since 1994. She's also a certified practitioner of the Institute of Functional Medicine, a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and an energy healer. She's the co-owner of her own private practice called Functional Mind.

She is the bestselling author of the book, What If It's Not Depression: Your Guide to Finding Answers and Solutions and has been interviewed about her pioneering work as a functional medicine psychiatrist on many podcasts and summits.

Tune in to this episode to learn about ADHD from a psychiatrist’s perspective.

Key Takeaways

[3:29] - What led Dr. Achina Stein to her current work

[10:40] - What is the DSM, and how is it created?

[14:23] - How are children typically diagnosed with ADHD?

[19:55] - Common underlying stressors/root causes

[21:35] - The importance of healthy digestion, protein, and healthy fats for children with ADHD

[23:03] - Dietary changes compared to medication

[24:49] - The Burp Test

[28:49] - Risks and side effects of stimulant medications

[32:52] - Key aspects of treatment plans that are sometimes missed

Memorable Quotes

“My goal for my patients is never to have someone suffer on a long term basis.”

“A diagnosis is only needed if you need accommodations, especially for ADHD...or if you want to go on medicine.”

“What the DSM is...it’s the Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Disorders where a group of people have come together...They are all deemed experts on some level...And then they decide how a diagnosis is made. And none of these diagnoses are made through any objective data.”

“There are certain disorders that are considered normal in some cultures that are considered abnormal in other cultures.”

“The problem with these tests and with the DSM is that it actually says zero - nothing - about cause.”

“Look at habits. I think many functional doctors miss that.”

“I see a bigger change in people with a dietary change than I do with medications.”

“I would say 60% of people don't tolerate medications as well, or respond to medications when medications are tried. I see a much more robust response to change in diet.”

“All mental health disorders basically have the same root causes.”

“Everyone is going to have a genetic predisposition to something but you can flip those genes, because it’s not the genes that matter so much...it’s more the expression of those genes. And you can turn off those bad genes and turn on those good genes through foods and through stress management.”

Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD - 45: CBD Oil and ADHD with Liz Carlile

45: CBD Oil and ADHD with Liz Carlile

Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD

play

02/23/23 • 25 min

On this week’s episode of Soaring Child, we are exploring an interesting topic - CBD oil and ADHD. CBD is one of the most highly researched plants and has been shown to be beneficial for a variety of body systems. In this episode, we discuss how it can benefit children with ADHD, as well as their caregivers.

Liz Carlisle is the host of the Motherhood Unstressed podcast. Through the show Liz converses with brilliant minds to empower and uplift her audience of women all over the world to live with less stress and more purpose and joy.

Liz is interested in the importance of non-negotiable self-care for mothers informed by personal experience. All of these pieces of the puzzle culminate into the brand Motherhood Unstressed, which believes that life is meant to be rich with purpose, cherished with loved ones, and wholeheartedly enjoyed.

Key Takeaways:

[3:01] What is CBD oil?

[3:40] What is the difference between CBD and THC?

[5:37] How does CBD oil help balance that system?

[6:44] Is CBD legal?

[9:24] Does CBD help ADHD symptoms?

[13:33] How did Liz get into CBD?

[22:08] Why does quality matter in CBD?

Memorable Quotes:

“CBD is short for cannabidiol and is simply one molecule out of many in the cannabis plant. I think a lot of people hear cannabis plant, and they immediately think of the marijuana plant, but the cannabis plant is kind of like the overarching plant that you can split into the marijuana plant or if it contains less than a certain amount of THC in it, it becomes hemp.”

“An interesting point is that we actually make our own cannabinoids. That's why it's called the endocannabinoid system because we produce cannabinoids, and we actually produce it during exercise, during sleep, all of these healthy practices, but most of us don't produce enough.”

”It is legal in all 50 states because again, it's coming from the hemp plant. It's not a marijuana plant so you're not violating any federal laws.”

“I tell my clients that when you start taking CBD, up the amount that you would normally do in the morning. You could take some in the afternoon and then at night so that you build up that reserve in your system.”

“The only side effects I could imagine is if you took way too much, you would probably want to lay down and take a nap.”

“When I first started Motherhood Unstressed, I was doing a little bit of mommy influencing and that kind of stuff. And so a CBD brand reached out to me to promote their product.”

“Living intentionally to me means starting your day with the intention of like, I know, stuff is going to get crazy. That's the nature of life. But I’m not going to let these outside circumstances overwhelm me.”

“I can’t control anything else...but I can control how I react to it.”

“When a stressful situation comes, centering yourself back into that intention, you know, can be so, so powerful.”

“Think about what that does in someone's life, when you go out into your day, and you're not constantly reacting to things.”

“CBD is an amazing plant for so many reasons. But it is a great plant for pulling heavy toxic metals out of the ground. They actually used the hemp plant to clean up Chernobyl...So, quality matters.”

39: Gut Brain Connection with Kiran Krishnan

Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD

play

01/12/23 • 42 min

On this week’s edition of Soaring Child, we’re joined by Kiran Krishnan, a research microbiologist who’s a renowned expert on the human microbiome.

Your microbiome, or gut, is a dense set of neurons that cover the entire digestive tract and can control the brain through circulation, the neurological system, immune system and lymphatic system. All these highways allow the gut and brain to constantly be influencing each other because they’re two parts of the same system.

In kids with ADHD, the gut-brain connection can be disrupted as early as in the womb through the mom’s gut bacteria. Many spectrum disorders are related to gestational stress. However, it’s never too late to make significant improvements.

If your child has neurodevelopmental concerns or symptoms, start by getting your child a quality stool test recommended by your practitioner.

Alpha diversity is very important for the gut as well. Without big groups of different microbes, we lose functionality which can cause developmental disorders, allergies and asthma.

So how do you grow alpha diversity in your gut? First, diversify your diet. Visit an ethnic market or buy different foods once a week. Eat lots of fiber-rich foods, use less cleaning products in the home, and get outside in nature with your family. Also getting a dog helps the microbiome.

There isn’t a magic bullet when it comes to your microbiome – it’s a complex ecosystem where small changes add up to big changes over time. It’s equally important to take care of yourself, not just your kids. Make it a family affair.

Key Takeaways:

[4:18] The gut-brain connection in general

[7:32] The gut-brain connection in relation to ADHD

[10:51] Stress test done on mice

[12:18] How a parent knows if there’s a gut-brain issue where the brain is compromised

[16:09] Starting with a stool test

[22:55] Black box technology

[27:33] Chronic conditions that occur when we lose microbes

[29:13] How to diversify your diet

[31:23] Why you should reduce cleaners in your household

[33:26] Why eating outside in nature is important

Memorable Quotes:

“You absolutely have to go after the gut no matter what the central nervous system or brain-related issue is, because it is going to be a component of the problem.”

“You should never ignore the gut as you're looking at improving your child's development and as you're looking at improving a child's cognitive performance. It's absolutely critical.”

“Microbes influence each other's behaviors by their presence. So you could find a pathogen in the gut and go, holy cow, I have a pathogen. That's bad. Well, that's not necessarily bad. It depends on who else is there to control the pathogen and facilitate other functions out of it.”

“Most of your genetic elements come from the microbiome. We have 150 times more genes in our microbes than we do in our own cells. So we are essentially a very complex microbial structure.”

“It's equally important for you to take care of yourself as much as your kids, because there is something called a microbiome cloud around your home. We share a biome within our household.”

Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD - 35: Sleep Techniques for the Whole Family with Kim West
play

12/08/22 • 42 min

On this week’s edition of Soaring Child, we’re joined by Kim West, the best-selling author of The Sleep Lady’s Goodnight Sleep Tight. She’s been training gentle sleep coaches internationally since 2010 and has been featured on Dr. Phil and Good Morning America as a leading child’s sleep expert.

So many kids with ADHD struggle with sleep, which in turn affects the parents’ sleep as well. In fact, more than 50% of non-neurotypical kids have behavioral sleep problems.

When our bodies go to sleep, they work on our immune system and with kids, the body often produces growth hormones during sleep. The body is also working on memory, retention, storage and organization during sleep, as well as short-term learning.

So when a child is sleep-deprived, it makes it harder for them to learn, to remember, and to pay attention, basically exacerbating ADHD symptoms. Many other conditions also affect sleep like asthma (and asthma meds), obstructive sleep apnea, gut issues, reflux, restless leg syndrome, and eczema.

Kim’s gentle sleep method has the parent stay in the room with the child while they learn, but then does less and less as the child learns to put themselves to sleep. It’s important to follow through with consistency.

She also recommends getting at least 8 hours of sleep, while going to bed and waking up at the same time. She also suggests having a routine before sleep to trigger melatonin in the body. These tips work for kids as well as adults.

Key Takeaways:

[4:45] The mechanics of falling asleep

[8:45] Why kids with ADHD are affected more from sleep deprivation

[14:16] Kim’s Gentle Sleep Method

[16:48] Most common underlying conditions that may be contributing to sleep issues

[19:02] Most common signs of sleep apnea

[26:30] Guide of how many hours of sleep a child needs at different ages

Memorable Quotes:

“We are dealing with children that have problems with attention. They have an attention deficit. So when you have a kid that's not sleeping well, it affects it even more.”

“That growth, that repair of the brain and the body is so important and is happening while we're sleeping.”

“I developed a method where you stay with them while they learn. You do less and less and move away as they incorporate the skill of putting themselves to sleep.”

“Probably what’s most important is that we follow through with consistency.”

“Having a routine actually helps tell the brain to start secreting melatonin, the drowsy making hormone that helps you start getting ready for sleep.”

Soaring Child: Thriving with ADHD - 33: A Natural Approach to Autism with Luminara Serdar
play

11/24/22 • 45 min

On this week’s edition of Soaring Child, we’re joined by Luminara Serdar, an autism recovery expert who helps parents discover and address the root causes of behavior so that their children can be calm and happy.

She discovered the neuromodulation technique at the recommendation of another parent to treat her own allergies. Soon she realized that it could help kids with autism in many ways. Neuromodulation works by giving the body a therapeutic intention to shift by finding errors that the nervous or the immune system is making and correcting them. It’s a new way to make the brain work.

Luminara explains that we have to train the brain to think there’s a different way to do things by identifying the errors and correcting them. It is literally an intention. The body is asked questions through muscle testing and it responds through strong or weak reactions, using the subconscious mind. It’s also important to use drainage and detoxification to get rid of toxins and waste that’s clogged in the body and disrupts our biochemistry. Many of these toxins come from diet and environment – everything from plastics to body products to air fresheners.

When these steps are taken, inflammation in the body goes down, better sleep increases, and a child with ADHD or autism can learn how to become calmer and happier. Remember to keep a calm energy as a parent and maintain a safe environment for your child.

Key Takeaways:

[4:40] How Luminara started working with kids with autism

[7:33] What neuromodulation technique actually is

[10:00] How to retrain your body to feel something different

[14:33] Other techniques used to help kids with autism

Memorable Quotes:

“I think we need to get our kids off this chronic illness cycle by helping them to stay cleaner and have a lifestyle that sustains them, not overwhelms them.”

“Allergies are very tied to emotion, and emotions can really affect allergy behavior. So it's all tied in. It's very holistic.”

“What I realized is these kids, at least the ones I get that I work with, are super toxic. They have a full bucket, and it's hard to get more in there. That’s when I started focusing on drainage and detoxification.”

“The more you take the stuff out of their bodies, the less they want to sit on the iPads, the less they want to look at technology, and the more ability they have to take in the world around them.”

“Symptoms like hyperactivity, tantrums, and meltdowns are warning signs from the body that something else is wrong, and that's their way of saying, ‘Mom, Dad, there's something wrong with me.’”

“This was my biggest lesson being a parent. My biggest lesson in life is how to shift my mindset, how to really approach things in a different way.”

Memorable Quotes:

  • “My number one tip for saving time in the kitchen is definitely meal planning... you’re getting a really good all-around healthy variety... you’re going to be saving money on the grocery bill and you’re just going to have more free time.”
  • “There are lots of different ways you can meal plan, but I really think fine-tuning it based on what works best for your family is going to be helpful.”
  • “The next step that I always suggest is to check your calendar. Look ahead. What does your calendar look like for the next week? If you know you have a busy day coming, you really want to plan for that day to be something quick, easy, or even leftover.”
  • “After you have all that ready, you have your plan, get a grocery list going. You create that list with everything you need. And block out some time to head to the store so that you can get all of those ingredients that you need for the week.”
  • “I find the best and fastest things to meal plan would be things for breakfast, overnight oats. Overnight oats are so nutritious. You can make a big batch on the weekends, and they don’t have to be the same everyday.”
  • “We have this wonderful plan and we think it’s great and then we get home and say, ‘I don’t feel like it’. I don’t feel like it, my husband doesn’t feel like it, so what do we do? I think it’s very important to have some go-to options in your freezer.”
  • “Every Friday, my family goes to our local pizza parlor and they have gluten/dairy-free pizza which is phenomenal. And I’m sure in your area, you can find a place that offers those options, and if they don’t, you can omit the cheese... or bring your own cheese.”

Ashley Gobeil specializes in Counseling Psychology and works in the fields of family therapy, school counseling, domestic violence, and all things pertaining to childhood trauma. She is truly an expert in healing children and adults.

In this episode, Ashley shares how to create behavioral changes for children and families as a whole, different parenting skills we need to develop such as compassionate empathy for our children, and how long it actually takes for our frontal lobes to fully develop. We discuss how to turn our frustration and anger into empathy, as well as how easily children mirror our behavior, which can be a very good way to change bad habits in both parents and children.

It’s imperative as a parent to learn how to effectively observe your child. Many parents want a shut-off button when their child starts to act out, but Ashley makes it evident that there’s no one-solves-all solution for that. We must learn and adapt from our child’s behavior in order to understand how they feel and also build trust with them.

Memorable Quotes:

  • “The way we approach our parenting, it actually must change if we really want to create behavioral change for children with ADHD.”
  • “Compliance doesn’t actually support healthy emotional regulation. We really want to be thinking about how we can build and support our kids with ADHD, to continue with that emotional regulation so they can eventually self-soothe and self-regulate.”
  • “Compassionate empathy... that real skill in our parenting that is genuine empathy flows from us to our children when they’re struggling... If they could do well, they would.”
  • “If they’ve been in the habit of responding a certain way to a certain situation, it’s going to be a habit.”
  • “That’s the beauty of the brain and that’s the beauty of children and the parent-to-child relationship because we can co-soothe them. We can co-regulate. We can change our approach to be more responsive and therapeutic.”

"Screens are not inherently bad, based on the amount of time you are using them, but it's just how are you using them?"
