Shoulder of Orion: The Blade Runner Podcast - 100 // Is It the Same Now, As Then? Shoulder of Orion’s 100th Episode
play

05/18/21 • 83 min

When Shoulder of Orion launched four years ago, we didn’t know what it would become. We knew we had a great film to talk about. We knew we had another film coming, and we knew we hoped it would live up to our impossible expectations.

But more than anything, we knew we were desperate to talk about this incredible universe. And we knew that through talking about it, we would find friends around the world who felt the same way.

After one hundred episodes, we know those truths to be more evident than ever: these films speak to people, and through speaking about them we are connected.

Join Jaime, Patrick, and Dan on this tour back through our first one hundred episodes. And know you were a part of every one of them, whether we mentioned you on air or not.

For years, we have been fascinated by the spiritual and philosophical ramifications of Blade Runner. What we haven’t explored, however, are the details of Replicant production.

How are Replicants made? Are they assembled, or grown? How are they different from us?

Join us in this first in a series of episodes where we explore the nuances of Replicant design, development, and creation.

Powerful yet sensitive, Moonlight (2016) is a unique coming-of-age story that portrays a man's conflict with identity, sexuality, loneliness, and self-discovery. This three-part drama follows the story of Chiron, a young boy growing up in Miami under arduous circumstances including bullying, violence, drug addiction and poverty. As he becomes older, other characters come in and out of his life, and it is through these interactions that we see Chiron begin to develop his own understanding of a world that is both harsh and beautiful–exhilarating and terrifying–and callously indifferent. Through deliberate choices in score and cinematography, we are fully immersed in this world. Barry Jenkins' (screenplay/directing) and Tarell Alvin McCraney's (playwright) beautiful, intimate story brought us together in a way we haven't seen a film do in a long time. Join Jaime, Patrick, and Dan as we discuss this artistic masterpiece.

At the very end of 2019, we lost yet another Blade Runner great: visual futurist, designer, and artist Syd Mead. In this episode, Jaime, Patrick, and Dan pay tribute to the man who was integral to much of the concept design and visual feel of Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, and Blade Runner 2049 among many other films. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Mead, and we offer this episode as a final thank you to a man who has taken us by the hand for most of our lives and turned our collective dreams of the future into a tangible reality that will live on forever.

Blade Runner: Origins is one of the boldest, most innovative storylines we've seen in all of Blade Runner to date. A story about identity, selfhood, family, and fate, Origins has struck a chord with fandom as a powerful new lens for exploring this world we love so much.

In this episode, Patrick and Contributing Host Peter from the Midwest take a deep look at the first eight issues of Origins. How does this prequel stack up to the original film? How does it compare to the other Titan comics to date? What does it contribute to the Blade Runner conversation?
