The best podcasts for unique voices, tall tales and real insights

Who am I?

Hi, I'm Mark Esper and I review movies. Sometimes it's a short review right after the first screening, sometimes it's a longer one when it needs to sink in a bit. Either way, I try to give you my best takes on every movie without giving away either the ending or any of that juicy stuff in the middle - and yet I still try to find bandwidth to rave about its successes or short comings. My first movie experience was Disney's Bambi and it scared the crap out of me. Years later 1977 arrived, and with it, Star Wars. Jump forward a bit more to a sunny filled afternoon in the 1980s and the dye was firmly cast with an epochal screening of The Omen followed by The Exorcist - and that was it. The curtains were open throughout and yet I still knew I wanted "in" on this movie thing.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

One of the key enjoyments about movies - is talking about them. In fact, you can try this one out yourself. Next time you go to the movies, listen the quality and calibre of the conversation afterwards. If it's a bad movie - nobody says much and openly wonder where they've left the car. But if it's a great movie - people can't shut up about it. Late night pizzas are bought. Pubs are loudly frequented and quite often, you might just miss the last train home. That's the power of cinema - because when it's good, it's an out of body experience that you can share with a roomful of strangers and yet still feel connected. In short, it's my job to tell you where those experiences can be found - and to do it without robbing you of a movie's best surprises

What is my podcast playlist about?

My "unique voices" playlist is deliberately more than just one subject. Sure, there's a clear movie bias here but these are the handful of other podcasts that really inspire and challenge me. I figured, you might like them too.

5. Shoulder of Orion: The Blade Runner Podcast

Why this podcast?

Ok, back to movies and possibly, arguably and indisputably one of the most influential movies of all time. I'm talking about Ridley Scott's Bladerunner. A film so shaded and nuanced that it's taken over 30 years to get right, it's a film whose visual aesthetic that has never dated, and neither has its ominous warning. In short, this is the podcast to peel back the intriguing layers on this film.
