Seared Histories

Welcome to Seared Histories Episode 3! Depression Era Mock Apple Pie!

How can you make good use of food leftovers, or make an inventive recipe when there is food scarcity? Most of us don’t have to worry about this, but during the Great Depression, being inventive was a necessity to feed the family!

There are many examples in history of food scarcity, times when humans had to become inventive to survive. One of these key times occurred between 1929 and 1939, also known as the Great Depression, a period in US history that had a long-lasting influence on the US economy.

This period was made even worse when the Dust Bowl added stress to the USA’s food production and farming industry, leading to overgrazed and barren lands that couldn’t be relied on to provide for the people.

How were people expected to survive during a time of poverty and loss? Well while Hoover was banging on about keeping the government out of the economy, the people did what they had to do, become inventive with the recipes they had at hand.

This lead to recipes like water pie, hoover stew, and our current favourite; The Mock Apple Pie!

This mother of a recipe is made without a single apple, not an apple in sight in the entire recipe, just some sugar, spices, and ritz crackers!

Join us for this episode as we explore the period known as the Great Depression, the only Presidency that lasted four terms, food waste in both history and today, and other ways in which we can be economic when we plan our recipes.

And for the first time ever; THE TEST TASTE! Listen to us as we quite literally eat a mock apple pie for the first time! Apologies if the chewing sound makes you feel sick!

Please note our intense giggles were from our overuse of the term “sweet cracker mush”! Sorry for the squeaky chairs! And please enjoy the shorter format!

Please consider donating food to your local foodbanks, these are tough times for all of us!

Episode 2: Double Fisting Sausages at the Winter BBQ!

We went to a Winter BBQ! This week we were invited to a Winter BBQ by our good friend, but the twist — it was actually a Braai (South African version of the BBQ).

The recipes we made for this particular party were a good ol’ Mac & Cheese, a Roast Corn salad, and two different types of cake; cup and sheet! Tiff also adorned her “Sausage King” hat and made homemade sausages, the curry flavour was Liam’s favourite, though quite frankly the sausages were being double fisted all night by all attendees!

Join us as we discuss the importance of BBQ in different countries and cultures, and explore the history of BBQ! And generally listen to us talk about our favourite subject; FOOD!

Why is a barbecue called a barbecue?

How did BBQ make us smarter?

What’s the difference between a sausage and a hotdog?

Why are we at drive-throughs in Mcd’s in 1940s for BBQ? And why are the milkshake machines always broken Ray Kroc?!

Find out in the Winter BBQ Episode! And join us word nerds at Seared Histories!

Episode 4: Feastin' on Eastern Jin Spring Rolls

How’s Japan? We don’t know because we live in Hong Kong! The home of delicious Chinese delicacies, including the glorious spring roll!

Join us this week as we explore the history of the Eastern Jin Dynasty with our super special guest Zelos!

Zelos is a Hong Kong native, Cantonese-speaking, spring roll-eating guest who shares with us the intricacies of Yum Cha (Drink Tea) and how different Chinese foods have implications on cultural events within the Chinese household.

Spring rolls have filtered out into multiple countries, with each having its own version/adaptation of this yummy treat, from the expected Asian countries, to the unexpected Australian version!

Other Yum Cha favourites include Shu Mai, Chicken Feet in Chilli & Blackbean (which you DO have to suck off, not dirty), Har Gow, Steamed Buns, and Siu Long Bao! Want to learn more about these? Then listen!

Worried about your health with deep-fried spring rolls? Follow our cooking tips on searedhistories.com to learn how to make a golden spring roll in the oven! If it aint gold, then it aint a symbol of wealth and prosperity!

What’s in a traditional Chinese spring roll? Not cheese as the US might lead you to believe (Philly Cheese Steak at Cheesecake Factory). In this episode, we absolutely will explore the key difference between an US egg roll, and a HK egg roll and we will delve into the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the evolution of the spring roll over time!

Sidenotes: Are there only 12 people in Minnesota? We don’t know, we aren’t a geography podcast!
