88. All About India with Comedian Ben Vyas
Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle
10/06/24 • 69 min
I recently watched the film Manjhi – The Mountain Man, about Dashrath Manjhi, a real life Indian man who carved a road through a mountain using only hand tools over the course of 22 years to make a road for his village to get to a nearby bigger village, reducing the travel time from 2 hours to around 40 minutes. I've always been fascinated with India in general, especially after growing up watching Russell Peters specials, and years ago I watched a special by Hamish And Andy of Australia where they explored India. I'm just curious about other countries in general so Ben Vyas, a local comedian on the scene was kind enough to join me on the pod and chat about India, Mountain Man, Ganesh, his Hindu faith in general and just any other questions I had in general about the country. We ended up getting really deep at the end and I realized in the middle of my conversation with Ben why this Mountain Man story has resonated with me so much. I hope you enjoy it!

87. Darren Shan Nostalgia with Hamish Mabon-Ross
Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle
09/29/24 • 40 min
In this episode, I brought back my regular compadre, Hamish Mabon-Ross to discuss the Young Adult horror vampire novel series that we both enjoyed in our youth - The Saga of Darren Shan! I had been feeling really nostalgic for this series as of late and when Hame mentioned that he was also familiar with it, I thought that's it! We need to do an episode of the pod talking about it. We mostly talk about his Cirque Du Freak / Vampire's Assistant / Tunnels of Blood books, but we also do talk about his later work, The Demonata and Zom-B towards the end. It's a bit of a mess in terms of continuity, we jump all over the place as random bits and pieces spark memories about other bits of the books, but I think you'll enjoy it all the same.
I know Darren includes podcasts and videos about his work occasionally in his newsletter the Shanville Monthly so if you're reading this Darren, thanks for the incredible books, I enjoyed them immensely as a kid and I'm sure they must have a part in shaping my personality as I grew up. Keep up the great work!
Cover art featuring my actual books.
The books, in case you're interested in checking them out are: The Saga of Darren Shan (also known as the Cirque Du Freak series
Vampire Blood Trilogy: Cirque Du Freak, The Vampire's Assistant, Tunnels of Blood.
Vampire Rites Trilogy: Vampire Mountain, Trials of Death, The Vampire Prince.
Vampire War Trilogy: Hunters of the Dusk, Allies of the Night, Killers of the Dawn.
Vampire Destiny Trilogy: The Lake of Souls, Lord of the Shadows, Sons of Destiny.
The Demonata: Lord Loss, Demon Thief, Slawter, Bec, Blood Beast, Demon Apocalypse, Death's Shadow, Wolf Island, Dark Calling, Hell's Heroes.
And then there's the Zom-B series but I'm too lazy to grab all the individual titles, give it a read, it's cool stuff! The Thin Executioner is awesome too.

Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle
09/11/24 • 44 min
In this episode I'm joined by probably the sweetest man in comedy - it's Kieran Carr! We met in November 2023 ish in New Zealand and even though he's back in the UK now we've stayed loosely in touch and he was keen to join me for an episode where we discussed his Tiny Joys. Kieran was also at the time in Edinburgh preparing to do a short run of his Solo Show "I'm Trying My Best" so we chatted a bit about the economical implications on the city of Edinburgh every year due to the festival as well as what we like in a festival show.
Kieran Carr's Tiny Joys
- Coffee from a Moka pot
- Being up early
- Meeting friends for dinner you've not seen for ages
- Zahínos, village in Spain

86. The Phantom Files Vol. IV - The Hunter, The Dark Entity & Cape Reinga
Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle
09/22/24 • 57 min
Back from the grave! It's another edition of The Phantom Files, just over a year later than Volume III. As usual I've got some fantastic tales to share, in this episode Rebecca from Volume I makes a return telling us about an entity she created called The Hunter. I play an old radio recording called Bongo In The Pilliga from an Australian radio show called Overnights about the area of Australia called The Pilliga where ghosts and cryptids are rumoured to have been sighted. I retell a story of one of the only instances where Christchurch had a ghost - The Victoria Street Ghost. Tracey Royce of The Quantum Foundation returns to tell us about an entity she saw that we have no way of describing but the story sent chills down my spine to hear it! We close off with a short story about the mythical Cape Reigna here in New Zealand, thought to be the entrance to the underworld in Māori mythology. It's a great episode, hope you like it!
This image shows how Tracey saw the entity that she did.
If you'd like to preorder a copy of Tracey's book, flick her an email to [email protected] and say hello, no payment needed until the book is published!

84. Therapy & Mental Health with Therapist Logan Robinson
Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle
09/15/24 • 48 min
In this episode I'm joined by a Christchurch based Therapist, Logan Robinson! Hot dog, he's a proper therapist and everything. We met very randomly as I saw a post he made on Reddit about offering cheap therapy, $60 every 2 weeks so just $30 a week. I felt that that was very generous of him to try and do his bit to help the mental health crisis we've got going on in NZ.
Here's a bit about Logan's specialities: "I'm a professional therapist with specialisation in ADHD/ADD, anxiety, depression, stress and burnout. I have a professional background in Mental Health, Social Work, Coaching and Vocational Rehabilitation alongside experience working with across the spectrum of disability, including neurodiversity."
I thought it would be cool to bring Logan on the pod and have a chat about mental health and he turned out to be a really nice, empathetic guy who seems like he offers practical and realistic solutions to helping your mental health. I reckon I'll bring him back on the pod at some point to yarn some more.
If you'd like to contact Logan and see if he's the right fit for you, visit https://robinsonwellness.org/ and tell him Big Queasy sent ya!
He's also on Insta https://www.instagram.com/robinsonwellness_/

85. Edinburgh Fringe Tips with Dan Boerman
Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle
09/18/24 • 43 min
In this episode I'm joined by Wellington based stand-up comedian, Dan Boerman who just returned from a hell of a run at the Edinburgh Fringe and so wanted to spread some of the wisdom he acquired while over there doing everything solo and yet still having massive crowds with many sold out nights. Some of the things Dan suggested discussing were:
- How I marketed my show without PR/an agent
- Stuff that I wish I knew
- Benefits of Edinburgh / opportunities
- How to not lose lots of money*
- How to not have a mental breakdown*
We also chatted about how to find a venue as well as source some accommodation which I had heard were the two hardest things about doing the EdFringe. It was my first time speaking to Dan face to face and he was a lovely fella. I hope you enjoy it!
You'll be able to watch the video of this conversation on YouTube at @RuddleMeThis if you'd like to see our faces, as well as a few other clips going forward.

80. Olympics & Fatherhood with Comedian Tim Kelly
Ruddle Me This! with Taylor Ruddle
09/01/24 • 74 min
In this episode I'm joined by Christchurch comedian, Tim Kelly! I wanted to bring Tim on to do a bit of an experiment and do a much looser format, this is the first podcast recorded on my new 2 person setup at home and it was so much fun. We chatted about The Olympics, being a father, Colin Quinn, Jim Norton, and how the two of us got into the Opie & Anthony radio show back in the day. Strap in because this one's a laugh and a half!

Podcast Q&A
Why did you start this show?
I started this show because in the New Zealand comedy scene we don't currently have a long form chat show podcast in the vein of JRE or other such shows that help get exposure to up and coming comics as well as other interesting guests. I figured somebody's got to do it eventually, so why not me?
What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?
Podcasts were sometimes the only thing getting me through the week when I was working office jobs I really did not enjoy, so I'm hoping I can provide the same thing to my listeners; a chill and down to earth long form podcast to help get them through the working day as cosy background noise. They might also learn a bit about New Zealand culture as well as some of the really funny people we have in the NZ comedy scene.
Which episode should someone start with?
Personally I'm a podcast completist so I tend to go back to the first episode when I listen, but honestly you could start at around episode 50 of my podcast and you'd have a bit nicer of an audio experience. It took me until around 30-40 to figure out what I was doing.
Which have been your favourite episodes so far?
#38 is a whole pile of stand-up clips from my first ever comedy tour so that's a lot of fun. #71 has my biggest guest to date, comedian Liv McKenzie who's been on the TV here in NZ. #59 and #60 were fun to record, as was #64. I did these in person and I think that translates well to a good vibe to listen to. #70 I did a commentary on one of my comedy specials, I've had good feedback about that one and it was really enjoyable to record.
Which episode are you most proud of?
#47 where I interviewed a playwright about his adaptation of The Odyssey. In my previous podcast I was often criticized for being not good at interviewing people and yapping too much over the guest but I think I did a fantastic job with the questions for this interview. After recording that one I thought to myself "Alright, you can actually do this!"
What is your vision for your show?
I want it to become the JRE of New Zealand, except obviously with more horse medicine and conspiracy theories! I believe I can build the show up to the point where it's as impactful on the comedy scene here in NZ as something like JRE, Your Mom's House, Bertcast etc where I can help comics sell tickets around the country and maybe even beyond by them appearing on the pod.
What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?
Right now I'm really loving The Rest Is History. Frankie Boyle's Here Comes The Guillotine is a very close second. Bertcast was my all-time fave for a long time but I have a bit of bert-fatigue at the moment. Hardcore History, how can you not love that pod? I'm also a massive fan of paranormal and horror podcasts; Shadows At The Door, Monsters Among Us, Nosleep Podcast, Creepy. Elder Sign. All good stuff!
How did you come up with the name for your podcast?
My previous podcast was called Ramblin' With Ruddle, which is a podcast I did for a couple of years and is a name I loved, but I felt like I needed to come up with a new name as a bit of a refresh, a rebrand if you will. I'm a big fan of the way podcasters will use a pun based on their last name, one that springs to mind is Rob Lowe's The Lowe Down. So I went for Ruddle Me This! Which has been a mistake, Google always asks "Did you mean 'Riddle Me This?' " which is a bane on my life.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I'm a stand-up comedian based in Christchurch, New Zealand. I've won and been nominated for a couple of comedy awards here in NZ. I've always been very self motivated and have taught myself how to do all the production side of this podcast. I do all of my own graphic design, too. I started doing comedy while living in Japan in 2015 and never looked back. I'm a big manchild, been a fan of video games, anime, wrestling, history and all that general geekdom for my whole life.
