Legend, Myth, or ancient true crime, the story of Shawney Bean and his monsterous family of flesh-eating murderers has been retold for centuries.

In 1974, coming off of his directorial debut, The Last House on the Left, Director Wes Craven was searching for ideas for his next story in the New York Public Library archives.

When he ran across the the story of Alexander “Shawney” Beane and his brood of butchers, Craven decided to craft a story of an All-American family on their way to California who get terrorized by a family of desert-dwelling psychopaths with an unspeakable taste for human flesh and monstrous brutality.

In 1948 Alfred Hitchcock would unveil his first color feature film, ROPE, a darkly satisfying crime thriller full of tense voyeurism and wicked narcissism about two precocious young men who attempt to prove they have committed the perfect crime by hosting a dinner party after strangling one of their former classmates to death.

A brilliant achievement of experimental cinematography and gripping suspense, it pales in comparison to the shocking events, grisly murder, and sensationalized trial that inspired it.

Between 1976 and 1977, “The .44 caliber Killer” as he was known in the press, murdered six people and injured seven more in shootings across the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn. He targeted young women and young couples, including, most famously, couples parked in cars at night and left cryptic messages, taunting the police and calling himself the “Son of Sam”.

23 years later, Director Spike Lee produced the crime thriller “Summer of Sam”, chronicaling the effects of a group of residents in New York, living through the killer’s reign of terror.

On this episode we’ll take a look at the 1999 film, ‘Summer of Sam’’ directed by Spike Lee, starring John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, and Mira Sorvino as well as the year-long murder spree and bizare investigation that inspired it.

Sex, drugs, disco, a record-setting heat wave, 24 hour blackout, and a city terrorized by a gun toting serial killer who claimed to take orders from his neighbor’s dog.

This is the story of the notorious serial killer David Berkowitz, known as the Son of Sam, and the Spike Lee joint he inspired.

My name is Brion Salazar and I will be your host for what I hope will be an entertaining and unique journey as we take a look at some terrific movies, and the real life events and true crime that they are based on or inspired by.

Every episode of REEL CRIMES I will be joined by a guest, a friend or friends of mine, to discuss one specific film and the true events that inspired it, comparing fact to fiction and diving down a rabbit whole of real events that ended up on the silver screen.

In season one, we will be looking at movies from different genres, including horror, thrillers, westerns and more, as well as the real life events they are based on. Be warned, we will be talking about both the film and the true events in detail, so every episode will contain spoilers as well as graphic details about real life crimes that some listeners may find disturbing.

If you would like to contact me, you can email [email protected], or visit our website at www.reelcrimespod.com. I am also available on twitter, instagram, facebook, and TikTok under the user name “reelcrimes”.

I hope you will join me and my friends as we take a look at some of our favorite films and the completely bizarre, often horrifying, and incredibly hard to believe true stories that inspired them.
