Reclaim Me - Episode 27 - Part 2 - Escaping The Control
play

09/11/21 • 74 min

Survivor Vera Lee is back to deep dive further into her experience of coercive control, domestic abuse and sexual abuse at the hands of her husband and the escalation of that abuse that occurred after her son was born. In this episode we discuss the importance of other mediums for telling our story than vocally, and the importance art can play in the healing of trauma. Vera Lee outlines the events that precipitated her leaving, and her experience in the courts and systems once she escaped her abuser.

It has been an absolute honour to speak with Vera Lee and to hear her story. This story shows that there is so much life after abuse, and the parthway to healing is a very different one for all abuse and trauma survivors.

We see you, we hear you, we believe you.

Vera Lee has also started the Why Me Movement which is a podcast and website. The WhyMe Movement was founded by Vera-Lee Curnow after multiple near death experiences and adversities in her life. One pivotal moment waking from a coma where she was not expected to survive, Vera-Lee explains how opening her eyes to the world with a fresh perspective, seeing colours with more vibrance, feeling the warmth of the sun like it was the first time again and knowing she never wanted to ask herself WhyMe in woeful unempowered feeling again, She decided that was the last time she was going to feel controlled by adversity into darkness.

In this episode, Harry shares his experience of sexual assault after a pride event in London.

This discussion covers drug an alcohol use, consent, and coming to terms with assault when its not as 'clear cut' as the movies show.

We discuss the mantra that its not no means no, its yes means yes, and the importance of gaining enthusiastic consent in sexual experiences.

Emily Campbell-Ross bravely shares her story of being raped by a man named Thomas Earle, he was found guilty and avoided jail time. This is her story.

Collectively as a community when the news of this sentence was brought into mainstream media, the women of Australia were absolutely outraged to see that yet again, people who convict sexual crimes were not being held accountable for them and getting off on them in the face of good character references and 'supportive family'.

Em and Madeleine go into detail in part 2 of the trial, Em's life following the assault and where she is today. We also incorporate as much laughter as possible - because if we don't laugh - we'll cry. So, hold onto your butts and join us for an enraging but important discussion.

Raquel shares her story from the beginnings of being sexually abused by a family member as a child, to the podcast series she created as a means to break free from the subsequent trauma and exploring life beyond the survivor narrative.

We discuss her transformation since releasing 'Silent Waves' - the podcast series which explores her own trauma and family circumstances. To her giving herself 'permission to find bliss', as she embarked on a new journey in Brazil. It is a heartwarming and hopeful discussion, that shows us the many faces of trauma and healing, and really proves that there is so much life after abuse.

Matt joins Madi to discuss the sexual abuse he endured as a child at the hands of a Scout leader, the subsequent years of coping, healing and moving through to court system. As well as how we can support Matt v Scouts in his fight for justice now.

Despite Matt’s abuser pleading guilty to charges of child sexual abuse, Matt is now facing bankruptcy for trying to hold Scouts NSW to account. Matt needs your help to continue his legal battle with Scouts NSW.

Matt needs your support so other survivors can seek justice too.

A win for Matt would set an important precedent that survivors could rely upon when seeking compensation from the organisations that failed to protect them from child sexual abuse. The costs order would be overturned, and all donated funds will be paid to other charities and organisations which support victims of sexual abuse.

This was a truly amazing conversation, one that was so insightful and that will go so many a feeling of comfort to listen to, as so man will hear themselves in this.

Jordyn Gray, a former Airforce Officer who was sexually assaulted on base by a colleague, shares her story with Madeleine. This goes into life on base, the assault and subsequent processes that ensued as a response. This is Part 3 of a multi part series with Jordyn, and she goes into so much detail about her experience which is so invaluable, as stories from members of the Australian Defence Force rarely are able to or do share their experiences of being victimised.

Jordyn has since started the Athena Project which is Veteran-Survivor founded support group for women veterans and military spouses who are survivors of SGBV. Please connect with Jordyn or the Athena Project via the below links!
