Men of Goodwill

Stories from Real Life

play

04/02/24 • 79 min

What does it mean to be a man of goodwill in the age of social media? Real-life friends Stephen Simpson (pastor), Rob Ryan (attorney), and Melvin E. Edwards (host) discuss the hot-button issues of politics, religion, and race, and attempt to make sense of Christian involvement in 21st-century party politics. Despite the 80-minute conversation, you'll be left wanting more. Ryan was suffering from a sinus infection, which affected his voice. Still, he was a great guest. Stories from Real Life - Beyoncé Carter's Country

Beyoncé Carter's Country

Stories from Real Life

play

04/16/24 • 51 min

This episode was inspired by Beyoncé's new Country album, called "Cowboy Carter." With three Black people in the discussion, this edition is part history lesson, part music appreciation, and part self-identification. My guests this week are Lynne Childress from Maryland and Darrin Evans from North Carolina. We talk about Country music, what defines genres and audiences, and the musical gatekeepers who think THEY get to decide what defines those genres and the audiences. Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I started this show because I'm curious about what makes people tick. I want to know why they made the decisions they made and how those decisions influenced the success they have enjoyed. Everyone's resume tells you what they have done in life. I dig to find out why and how.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

I hope listeners find a commonality and become part of this community. The stories we share make us who we are. The stories we connect to build bonds.

Which episode should someone start with?

I recommend starting with the Bob Kendrick episode. He is such a compelling storyteller.

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

My two favorites were the ones with Bob Kendrick and Hans Boas because baseball and language really excite me.

Which episode are you most proud of?

I'm most proud of the Texas German episode with Dr. Hans Boas.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

When I was writing my genealogy books, I realized that facts don't always matter to some people. "Real life" is what people tell themselves it is. It's sort of a fantasy to some, yet remains the truest part of real life for the ones who hold those beliefs.
