The best podcasts for indie storytelling

Who am I?

Melvin E. Edwards has written 2 award-winning books tracing generations of his Texas family back to the Republic of Texas. I'm a writer, historian, and genealogist who loves to find the stories behind the data entries. Finding an entry in a census record is important, but it's not nearly as important as the information of those lives between the 10-year recording keeping. That's where I love to dig! I am a writer and have been a storyteller for my entire career. Taking that format and translating it into an auditory medium seemed like the next logical step for me.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

Are you someone who finds comfort in the contours of a well-woven story? Do you revel in the anticipation of "what happens next" or simply appreciate the essence of human experience distilled into captivating tales? If you've nodded, then "Real Life and Other Fantasies" is perfectly concocted audio-delicacy for you. It's for dreamers who admire the daring dance between the every day and the extraordinary. It's for realists who hunger for discerning the extraordinary within the everyday. With tales touching various facets of life, it's a fascinating call to story enthusiasts, aspiring writers, or just the average Joe seeking an audio oyster to escape into. Carry yourself to Goodpods.com and give it a whirl - because who knows? You may just find your own reflection in these versatile vignettes. Hosted by award-winning author and journalist Melvin E. Edwards, whose goal is world domination - two listening ears at a time. Show notes and sponsor links are all available at www.podcastreallife.com.

What is my podcast playlist about?

I follow fellow storytellers. Not every story is a "Once upon a time." Some stories begin as simply as being open and honest and allowing the story to take whatever shape it naturally takes.

2. Meredith for Real: the curious introvert

Why this podcast?

Less canceling. More curiosity. Each episode explores the questions people think, but don't ask, due to cultural hypnosis or being taboo. The mission here is to inspire curiosity by exploring nuance & breaking free from the bubble of the algorithm.

Each episode explores a taboo question or cultural blind spot with an expert who is themselves, a paradox -
Like the atheist doctor who studied near death experiences for 50 years (ep 224)
Or the deeply religious man studied by NASA who sees UFOs regularly (ep 261).
The mission is to inspire the kind of curiosity that looks for & celebrates nuance, because we all deserve a more curious future.
So tune in each week (new episodes every Monday) to question things like American individualism (ep 260), trigger warnings (ep 208) & circumcision (ep 178).
Still not sure where to start?
Other listeners loved ep 230 - Can a sexless marriage survive? and ep 237 - Black man who attends KKK rallies: race & friendship

Scandals have shaped America since its founding. From business and politics to sports and society, we look on aghast as corruption, deceit and ambition bring down heroes and celebrities, politicians and moguls. And when the dust finally settles, we’re left to wonder: how did this happen? Where did they trip up, and who is to blame? From the creators of American History Tellers, Business Wars and Tides of History comes American Scandal, where we take you deep into the heart of America’s dark side to look at what drives someone to break the rules and what happens when they’re caught. Hosted by Lindsay Graham.
