After we recorded this episode, we lost Tim's side of the conversation!
This is where Kyle learned that Squadcast.fm can recover web recordings using their "backup" feature.
They are not pretty and the audio is completely out-of-sync... but it is better than having to re-record everything.
Working with un-synced audio is very painful, but so is losing it all. So remember this: Two is one and one is none. Always have a backup.

Tim and Kyle talk with Hall-of-Fame Podcaster Dave Jackson (School of Podcasting) about strategies that can salvage your show when you put a bad podcast episode into the world.

Learn the tacit knowledge that only comes from a podcaster who has thousands of episodes and millions of minutes on the microphone.

What did we learn?

There are a lot of ways to help you mitigate the damage of those mistakes.
You CAN recover from a bad episode.
Publishing an episode that did not include your voice.
Publishing an episode that only plays one of two voices on the recording.
Interviews - Didn't hit record.
Interviewee that fell asleep.
Cut and Paste from an old episode and publish the wrong one.
Don't listen with the ears of a podcaster but with the ears of a listener.
You can go overkill on recording gear.
You can go overkill on the number of audio file version saves.
Hoarding audio files for "just in case" is a real thing that all podcasters do.
The bare minimum for podcasting gear should be enough for a new podcaster to "get by" -- this means settling for a $60 microphone instead of going out and buying the AKG C-24 that was used in Pitch Perfect 3. (Pro Tip: The AKG C-24 is a collectors microphone for the low low price of $9K).
Some gear is just weird (with 10-feet of cable) and we just have to live with it.
Be careful when you name your podcast the same as a podwrecked podcast.
Subscribe to your show with Apple Podcasts/Overcast (on iPhone), and Pocket Casts/Castbox (on Android) to know when your episode goes live.
Google Play Music is NOT Google Podcasts - they are two separate things!
Not many people will want you to remove content from an interview (or remove a snippet).
Always ask in an interview "Is there anything in this interview you don't want out in the world?"
A single episode marked "Explicit" will drop you out of a lot of other countries unless you're not interested in having an audience in those countries.
When it comes to audio obsessions, remember that some folks in your audience are listening in the shower.

Questions to ask yourself if you Podwreck:

How long has the episode been out to the world?
How many people already have this episode?
Do I want everyone to get the corrected episode?
Do I care enough to put a re-post in my feed?
How long do you want to wait for Apple Podcasts to update from my change?
Did anyone even notice there was a problem?

Hall-of-Fame Dave-isms:

"Please subscribe to your own podcast!"
"Remember, the Internet writes in ink!"
"Nobody cares how the sausage is made. Just bring me content!"
"As podcasters, there is a big chunk of our hearts that wants to serve [our audience]."
"Please do not start your show off with an apology. Do it at the end where your super fans are!"

Elegant Solutions Notes:

If you don't care about Spotify and Google Play Music, you can repost with the exact named file.
Everyone who already downloaded it now as the "collectors edition" of that episode.
You can repost the audio file with the same name and just not worry about those who already have it.
You can post a NEW audio file and not worry about your subscribers getting a second version of the first file.
Apple Podcasts will show the new post but not remove the old one because it is only a mirror to your own feed.
It may take up to 24-hours to show any changes in the Apple Listing because it is only a snapshot of what is going on with your podcast in 24-hours (not minute-by-minute).
Apple Podcasts may never remove the listing of the first listing of your changed episode.

Ep.9 -Is Google Podcasts too late or just in time?

Tim and Kyle take a deep dive into Google's strategy for putting practically zero effort into marketing their new podcast application: Google Podcasts.

Tim and Kyle talk about Google's June 2018 announcement of their stand-alone podcasting app launch.
Do some thinking on why 55 percent of all US users and 86 percent of the world are on phones with the Android OS, but Google Podcasts only accounts for only 0.9 percent of total listens. Why?

What did we learn?

The biggest complaint about Google Podcasts is that it's an app and not native to Andriod OS like Apple Podcasts is to iOS.
Even if someone DOES download the app, does the app have everything you want in a podcast listening application? Only for those who don't know what podcasting is
Not everyone is in the Google Ecosystem... Yet! Google Podcasts is all about connecting people to Google Assistant and having a podcast player they can use in the car.
This is not an attempt by Google to put your favorite podcast app out of business. This is Google's on-ramp to podcasting if you've never listened to podcasts before.
This is Google's slow move towards the future where they move past directories and jump straight into audio indexing. Checkmate!

This is the "what does my website look like on other browsers?" song.
Followed by the "what does my website look like on other phones?" B-side sleeper hit.
Now, it's "what does my podcast look like on all apps?"... or even the better question: "IS my podcast in all the apps?"
You have to look up your podcast because you can't fix what you don't know!
We thought a podcast name needed to be unique. Nope! Turns out you can have the EXACT SAME NAME in Apple Podcasts (iTunes)! We didn't know that was possible
We find out that not all podcasting statistics are created equal and not all hosts let you know where your listeners are coming from.
We know that not all hosts use IAB Standards but when you mix downloads with streaming with listens we can see why newbies get confused.

PDO Recommendations for Podcasters:

1. Stay away from a podcast with the same name because it's hard to find your podcast next to the others already
2. Don't confuse your audience by being similar
3. The answer to your show's name is in your content if you're looking for it
4. Massage your message by making your name stand out from the static
5. Search your own podcast on all the apps -- Yup! All of them!
6. Do the work now, save the struggle for other fights not related to having to keep telling people which podcast is yours
7. Go through all the apps and see if you're on your favorite apps
8. If it gets crazy, get someone to help you with Podcast Discovery Optimization (PDO) if you're not showing up (like Mathew Passy - The Podcast Consultant)
