Welcome back my people!

Did you hear about the return of one Gabby Douglas? She returned to competition this past weekend. Here is a video of her FLOOR ROUTINE from the American Classic where she qualified to the US Championships. Not too shabby for taking 7 years off!

Today we are going to talk about mastering basic skills. Why is this important? I'm glad you asked. Today I will answer all those questions and hopefully give you both insight as an athlete and possibly how to help your child why it is so important to master the easy stuff before they can master the more difficult stuff.

Here is the link to the HOLLOW BODY TRAINING VIDEO I mentioned in the podcast. Remember the hollow body is the building block for so many gymnastics skills you will also find in CrossFit.

Happy Valentine's Day. In honor of today's special holiday, I'm discussing how I plan special events in the gym.

I give all my secrets for how I strategized in creating, scheduling and planning special events. I have separated these special events into three categories:

1. Weekly: Includes open gym and birthday parties.

2. Monthly: Parents night out.

3. Annual: Recreational Olympics (our yearly "recital").

I give you key components that made these events successful and welcome any additional questions you may have about how I planned these events. I hope this assists any owners or gym directors out there who are looking to elevate their gym revenue and create more opportunities to get kids in the gym.

Are you looking for assistance with programming your preschool gymnastics classes? I now provide customized preschool planning based on your gym's specific needs. Totally customized and totally fun. This is a great way to take the stress out of your job and leave it to someone who has over 30 years coaching experience. Want to try it our for free? I will give you two weeks of programming if you message me on social media HERE.

Have questions? Write me a message @jrthegymnasticscoach on Instagram, Tik Tok, Facebook, or on my YouTube channel.

Summary

Anna Stern, a coach and adaptive athlete, shares her journey of overcoming cancer and living with a neurological movement disorder called dystonia. She discusses the challenges faced by adaptive athletes and the importance of accessibility in fitness spaces. Anna also talks about her experience as an NCAA athlete and her upcoming participation in the Adaptive CrossFit Games. She emphasizes the need for understanding and support for individuals with disabilities. Anna discusses her experience with dystonia and how it affects her hip flexors. She explains that dystonia is an overactivation of signals from the brain to the muscles, causing involuntary muscle contractions. Anna takes medications that reduce electrical activity in the brain to manage her symptoms. She also talks about the challenges of competing in multi-day events like the CrossFit Games and the importance of rest and recovery. Anna is passionate about coaching other people with disabilities and volunteers for Angel City Sports, an organization that provides free access to adaptive sports.

Welcome back to the show. Today host JR Jaquay is welcoming Alice Toyonaga, co-owner of ModoYogaLA. Alice is here to share the benefits of hot yoga and talk about whether or not she considers herself a "yogi". Her description of a yogi may surprise you.

Are you struggling with stress in your life? We all feel it sometimes; the daily grind of our lives can sometimes just be overwhelming. I am on a journey, learning to deal with my stressful life. My objective is not to look like I always have everything under control because that's just not a realistic picture of my life. I would rather have conversations about my struggles with friends, with my listeners. Having open conversations is how we break stereotypes and normalize speaking about our mental health struggles. Fitness, therapy, meditation...find what helps you and keep doing it. I hope you enjoy today's episode.

Disappointment is a universal emotion that can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, gender, or financial status. In the context of sports, disappointment often arises when athletes fail to achieve their goals, such as making it to the Olympics. Coping with disappointment requires acknowledging and accepting emotions, shifting focus to what can be controlled, and visualizing success. Support from teammates, coaches, and family is crucial in helping athletes bounce back. It's important to remember that disappointment does not define one's worth, and setbacks can be turned into opportunities for growth.

  • Disappointment is a natural part of life and sports, and it does not define one's worth.
  • Athletes can cope with disappointment by acknowledging and accepting their emotions.
  • Shifting focus to what can be controlled, such as attitude and effort, can help athletes bounce back.
  • Visualization is an effective technique for building confidence and resilience.
  • Support from teammates, coaches, and family is invaluable in navigating through disappointment.
  • Setbacks can be turned into opportunities for growth and learning.

Welcome back to the podcast. This week I want to discuss setting realistic goals. So often people find themselves setting goals and later realizing they didn't accomplish those goals. Why does this happen? Are people jusy lazy? I don't think that's the answer. More often than not folks don't quite understand how much work needs to go into success. Maybe they don't know where to start.

Today I am going to outline the S.M.A.R.T. rule and hopefully it provides clarity on how to find success.
