Re-discover the amazing story of the 1999 cult classic - Planescape: Torment.

A fully voiced re-telling of the game's story with a modern take and narrative drive.

I hope to follow on from Rhyss Hess' example in lovingly creating an homage to this wonderful story, that aims to allow new and existing fans to enjoy the narrative in an episodical, fully voiced, unofficial audio series. I will be mostly using Dan Simpson's in-depth guide to cover as much content as possible in one single playthrough.

This series began as a way to challenge and stretch my voice over and audio editing capabilities; and since, has become a vast passion project where I re-experience one of my all-time favourite stories, bringing renewed life to the beautifully written characters.

What is Planescape: Torment - The Unofficial Audio Series about?

This audio fiction started as a small idea to help me express myself during a difficult time in my life. I was craving nostalgia and wanted to revisit the game that had played a foundational role in the development of my imagination and creativity. This story is about life, death and what it means to exist between the two. It is a story about how we move through the world and how the world responds to us. It is a story about learning to trust yourself and make the right decisions. It also a story about failure and the flaws that we humans are riddled with. Since beginning this journey I have put more of myself into this project than I imagined I would. The game itself is deeply personal, despite its bizarre setting. It is fundamental and human. I want in this project to share my love for the powerful story that runs through this game.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

I've always loved the video game Planescape: Torment; and one year, when I was a little unwell I started another playthrough for the nostalgia and comfort. While I was playing, I thought it would be fun to practice different voices, reading all the dialogue outloud. I enjoyed this so much, I thought - why not record it and it developed from there. Since then I've taught myself to edit audio, direct, and produce a professional audio fiction suitable for public enjoyment!

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

I hope listeners get to hear the richness of the story of Planescape: Torment. The writers of the game put in so much love and care and detail; I want to share that to people both who remember the game fondly or indeed never had the chance. Perhaps they'll be intrigued and want to pick up the game and enjoy the story their own way.

Which episode should someone start with?

Of course, starting from the beginning will guide you into the story neatly. However, I am always learning and therefore my ability to produce a good audio fiction has grown and changed over time. Episode 005 Deionarra is wonderful, featuring a second extremely talented actor and setting up the emotional heart of the story. Or much later, 035 The Mausoleum has a good 'classic action adventure' storyline, not requiring too much prior knowledge to get into. You could then loop back to the start!

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

I love the episode 024 Stories for Coin - at the heart of all this is the wonders of storytelling; and the character who demands the main focus in this episode is a humble storyteller peddling tales for a little 'jink'.

Which episode are you most proud of?

Episode 011 - The Rat Trap was a real step up in terms of sound design; lots of interesting characters and a dramatic finish, which I enjoyed making.

What is your vision for your show?

I want to adapt the full story of Planescape: Torment into a the format of episodical audio fiction. The story will break down into 4 'Acts' - each act will take roughly a year to roll out. Beyond that, I want to bring the rich elements of the Planescape campaign setting, adding details where I think they work best to supplement the story.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

The White Vault - I fell in love with audio fiction and specifically audio horror through listening to Fool & Scholar's masterpiece.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I kept it simple, it is what it is. The unofficial audio series of the game Planescape: Torment.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm an actor, writer and director (and now audio fiction producer) from the UK. I have worked in Film, Television and Theatre as an actor since 2010. I'm a big old nerd, who loves all things fantasy, sci-fi and fictional storytelling.
