The best podcasts for Spooky, Thoughtful Winter Walks

Who am I?

Audio fiction actor, writer, director and producer. I make Planescape: Torment - The Unofficial Audio Series. It's how I like to spend my time when I need to change my head space. I find walking extremely useful for clearing my head. And to me Fantasy or Horror fiction is a great way to balance the creative mind, being both inspirational, but easy to get into without having to focus too much.

My Show

What is my podcast about and/or how does it relate to the playlist topic you chose?

My own flagship podcast utilises elements of comedy, adventure and horror to provide a rich escapist experience, while being fundamentally human.

What is my podcast playlist about?

My podcast playlist is about finding something you can listen to to scratch an itch of curiosity and escapism. It should not only provide some great storytelling, but inspire you to listen to the stories of those around you. All these podcasts deal with topics and situations that, while sometime surreal or fantastical, are always about the human experience. What better thing to listen to on a walk in the cooler, darker season?

The podcasts I picked and why

1. The White Vault

Why this podcast?

In my opinion, it is one of the best audio fiction podcasts out there. It is thoughtful and frightening! The start is a slower pace, but once you're into it, you will be hooked.

2. Please Leave

Why this podcast?

This is a non sequential horror podcast. While listener discretion is advised, each of the stories finds a balance between hope and fear. All are directly human, in some cases dealing with exceptionally complicated emotions. A must listen for horror fans.

3. Midnight Burger

Why this podcast?

This story takes you across time and space, yet sits you slap bang in the middle of an American Diner. The characters are complex, yet relatable in a way that I rarely hear in sci-fi.

When Gloria took a waitressing job at a diner outside of Phoenix, she didn't realize she was now an employee of Midnight Burger, a time-traveling, dimension-spanning diner. Every day Midnight Burger appears somewhere new in the cosmos along with it's staff: a galactic drifter, a rogue theoretical physicist, a sentient old-timey radio, and some guy named Caspar. No one knows who built Midnight Burger or how it works, but when it appears there's always someone around who could really use a cup of coffee. "When the waves of the universe crash unrelentingly, when the stars seem indifferent to your plight, suddenly there is a diner." We open at 6.

It's 1721, and London is abuzz with news of notorious pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, currently languishing in Newgate Prison. It’s the perfect time for debt-ridden journalist Nathaniel Mist to exploit the public appetite and ghost-write a sensational (and hopefully best-selling) history of pirates. But as the balladeers and gossips on the streets of London build myths around the blood-thirsty, perverse lady pirates, Mist is forced to reckon with the real Bonny & Read... Featuring musical sensation Christina Bianco, actress and comedian Sooz Kempner, Hamilton star Karl Queensborough, drag legend Le Gateau Chocolat, and more. BBC Audio Drama Awards 'Best Podcast' and British Podcast Awards 'Best Fiction' Nominee 2022.
