A/Prof Craig Allingham: Clinician | Author | Educator
Physio+10 focuses on the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and today's conversation is with A/Prof Craig Allingham. Apart from carrying the Olympic flame, Craig has illuminated many vanguard areas of physiotherapy. Being a sports physio when there was no such course, creating books on Men's health when the topic barely existed, and incorporating business concepts into a mostly, sole practitioner based-industry.
In this conversation with Craig we learn;
* what Craig & Monty Python have in common
* the benefit of stepping outside of our normal boundaries and asking questions
* how doors open when opportunities are explored
* and at the end, you will hear 2 stories describing a 180 degree U-turn, on what we think makes a therapeutic relationship work
Biography
Craig's first ten years as a physio consisted of public hospital, start a practice, post-graduate study, sell a practice, move house five times, travel with a national sports team, join sports physio group committee, go to several APA Conferences and have two kids. Then it got really busy.
Now in the twilight of his career, Craig looks back on four Olympic Teams, academic appointments, headlining international conferences, several major changes in professional direction, retiring then unretiring and his current job description is as a 'Freelance Physiotherapist'. It has been brilliant fun.

A/Prof Shaun O'Leary Researcher | Educator | Clinician
Physio+10 focuses on the journeys of trailblazing Physiotherapists and today's conversation is with Associate Professor Shaun O'Leary. Failing year 12 isn't exactly the ideal start to a planned career in Physiotherapy, but as the youngest in a family of sugarcane growers that is how Shaun's journey did start. Oh, did I mention that he also had to get over a boyhood romance of being a pro golfer!
In this conversation with Shaun we also learn;
- how his learning strategies had to change midway through his physio training to reflect a maturing in the nature of the content being learned
- about his gypsy years in Europe and Australia post-graduation
- that he has a passion for lifelong learning
- about his ongoing professional commitment to the Australian College of Physiotherapists and the Specialisation pathway
Biography
Dr Shaun O’Leary is a Senior Fellow in Physiotherapy between the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland (UQ), and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) Physiotherapy Department and Neurosurgical/Orthopaedic Screening Clinics. He is also a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist as awarded by the Australian College of Physiotherapists.
Dr O’Leary’s combined academic and clinical track record underpins his conjoint UQ/RBWH appointment. His service to health is broad, spanning the supervision of clinical research (clinician-initiated, research higher degree, honours, coursework masters), clinical education and mentoring across all levels of the physiotherapy profession (undergraduate, postgraduate, professional development, and specialisation), with a particular interest and role in developing clinician-scientist career pathways in Australian public health. Dr O’Leary also serves as a councillor and senior examiner for the Australian College of Physiotherapists, and is the Chair of the college's Fellowships Program Standing Committee.
