Solar? Only good during the daytime. Wind?! What about the BIRDS!? How about a renewable energy source deep beneath our feet, Geothermal Power! Tongue-in-cheek dissing on other power sources aside, geothermal is a kind of renewable energy that hasn't been discussed in the public eye as much as solar and wind, even though it has successfully been powering homes in the US and abroad for decades. Can this power source be deployed in areas outside of geothermal hot spots? How does it make electricity from ground-hotness? Find out in this episode!

Ep. 77 BioFuel = BioCool
Petri Dish
12/28/20 • 56 min
It is probably going to be a while before we can *totally* stop using things like jet fuel and diesel, but they are both non-renewable *and* leave a carbon footprint. WHAT'RE WE GONNA DO?
Biofuels could help! Depending on how they're made, they could end up being carbon neutral, or have a smaller footprint than regular fuel. On top of that, they'll be renewable! But how do they work? Do we have biofuels already in our gas tanks?

Ep. 69 Gut Ulcers! (And Stress?)
Petri Dish
11/02/20 • 42 min
This episode is about peptic ulcers, the ulcers of your stomach and duodenum. For a long time they were considered to be linked to stress, but that idea fell a little out of favor when H. pylori bacteria were discovered as a major causative agent for gastritis. But in more recent years, stress and its connection to peptic ulcers are making a bit of a comeback!

We did a twitter poll and the people have spoken! You folks want to hear about the "Blood Brain Barrier"! But what is it, besides great alliteration?! The blood brain barrier is a lot like a bouncer for the exclusive dance club that is your brain -- but who is allowed in? How does one get in? And on a cellular and protein level, who are the actual bouncers that keep us out? Next week we will get into some of the details on diseases and drugs and their impact on the blood brain barrier, so tune in next week too!

But what do we know about this sucker now, a couple of months in to this not-quite-pandemic-yet? What are the latest stats on the number of cases, what countries should we be looking at, what do we know now about the biology of COVID-19, and also conspiracy theories are dumb. Ep. 46 Science of Sick
Petri Dish
06/01/20 • 46 min
What actually happens when you get infected with something? What are the steps your body goes through to protect you? Why do so many illnesses have "flu-like" symptoms? Find out this week as Sean and Nathan dive into the SCIENCE OF SICK(ness)!
We recorded this episode a while ago, so it does not make reference to current (US) events. We here at Petri Dish support protesters and the cause they represent -- an end to racial discrimination against Black people, an end to police brutality, and a restructuring of the USA to a more equitable and equal society. Black lives matter! Thank you everyone, for listening.
