Transfer Addictions and Treatment - Interview with Bariatric Therapist Ashlyn Episode 204
04/11/23 • 84 min
We have a repeat guest, bariatric therapist Ashylyn. We learned so much from her in episode 193 that we had to have her back to dive deeper into transfer addictions that occur in the bariatric community after weight loss surgery. If you haven’t listened to that episode, go back and catch up now.
In this episode, we discussed the most common transfer addiction, alcohol, and the reasons why this transfer addiction may be happening and treatments to help. She also examines the dangerous behaviors of gambling, rage, debiting (shopping beyond your means), workaholics, sex, and shoplifting.
The primary treatment for many of these addictions is getting to the root cause and past traumas or self-protections that have led to these behaviors once food was no longer a viable coping mechanism. She encourages people to reach out if they feel that they’ve gone too far with behavior that makes them feel uncomfortable.
You do not fail; you learn. The more self-aware you are, the easier it becomes to recognize the triggers and help slow down these risky behaviors.
*Ashyn mentions the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) in this episode. The World Health Organization developed this test, and it’s used widely by health professionals. If you think you may have a drinking problem, please reach out for help.
Ashlyn Douglass-Barnes, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker in her private practice at Advance Bariatric Counseling. She works with pre-op bariatric patients to complete the required psychological evaluation and post-op bariatric patients who need continued therapy after weight loss surgery. She also helps therapists pursue a focus on bariatric counseling with her course, Learn Bariatric Psychological Assessments.

Three Years of OSLP - Live Recording from Just BE You Media Episode 203
Kellie and Mel are two lifelong friends in different stages of their vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) journey.
In 2020, they had the idea for this podcast when there was nothing else like it in the community. They started the first patient-produced podcast to raise awareness around bariatric surgery and to help other patients find information that wasn’t available when they had weight loss surgery.
They believe patients deserve to know all the information and find the tools they need to succeed. Kellie and Mel hold nothing back as they discuss the nitty-gritty of life as a bariatric patient: the good, the bad, and the downright absurd!
They’ve interviewed numerous professionals and bariatric patients to bring accurate information to the community and a variety of perspectives.
Three years later, they are still going strong in supporting the bariatric community and helping countless individuals navigate bariatric life through their podcast and bariatric support group on Patreon and Facebook.
In 2022, they created the first bariatric award show to celebrate people in the community and build mainstream awareness around surgical weight loss. The 2nd Annual Just Be You Bariatric Awards is in Washington DC, on September 30th, 2023. They hope to see you there!

The Impact of Food Guilt After WLS Episode 205
Kellie and Mel sit down on their own in this episode and chat about all things “food guilt.”
Mel begins the episode with a recent encounter with food and the spiral of guilt, justification, self-sabotage, and punishment she experienced after the event.
They unpack several challenges related to eating “off plan” or consuming non-nutrient dense foods after weight loss surgery and what comes up for them as influencers in the community. They discuss their history of food restriction, comfort eating in times of stress and dysregulation, and the various levels of guilt they feel after eating certain foods.
Kellie and Mel encourage you to seek peer support and therapy if you feel guilty for eating “off plan” and need help finding a way out of the cycle of self-belittling thoughts. Discussing your feelings with others and getting them out of your head allows you to understand WHY you are in this cycle and HOW to recognize and work through it.
