“I slipped on my sunglasses and headed down the stairs, the heavy weight of the afternoon heat hanging over me like a shroud. The Gulf Wind Motel loomed behind me, a crumbling monument to forgotten lives and half-buried sins. Somewhere in the maze of this seedy stretch of coastline, Joe Crowder had made a mistake, and now it was up to me to figure out what that mistake was—before it caught up with me too.”

80-Year-Old Beaten to Death in Innerkip
Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast
10/18/24 • 1 min
Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll from Nicoll Investigations and I’m here to tell you about the next episode of Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast, coming this Sunday, October 20.
On September 15, 1988, 80-year-old Thera Dieleman got a ride into town to enjoy a day of shopping in Goderich, Ontario. Afterwards, she was dropped off at home and settled in for a relaxing evening.
Thera had been widowed two years prior, so lived alone in her home in Innerkip, Ontario. She was often checked on by family, friends, and neighbours who were eager to give her a hand any chance they could.
The next afternoon Thera’s neighbour called to see how she was doing. Following repeated attempts, he became worried and headed over to her house to make sure everything was okay.
After getting no answer at the door, he entered the home. Just inside the front door, he found Thera dead on the floor.
Thera’s murder is still discussed in Innerkip today. Many residents in the small community knew her and her family well and have hoped for years this cold case can be solved. Perhaps with help from this podcast a new detail may emerge.
Join us in the latest episode of Ontario Cold Cases – Canada’s True Crime Podcast, coming this Sunday, October 20, as we try to unravel and answer these questions to murders that have never been solved, and don’t forget to subscribe with new episodes daily wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts.

The Murder of Tori Stafford – Part 1
Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast
12/10/24 • 19 min
Good evening, true crime enthusiasts, and welcome to another chilling episode of Ontario Cold Cases – Canada's True Crime Podcast. I’m your host, Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations, and tonight, we’re opening the book on one of the darkest chapters in Canadian history: the abduction and murder of eight-year-old Victoria ‘Tori’ Stafford. This case sent shockwaves through the quiet town of Woodstock, Ontario, and left an entire nation grappling with unimaginable horror.
On this episode of Historical True Crime Tuesdays, we’ll unravel the story of a little girl who was a perfect blend of sparkle and grit. Tori Stafford was vibrant and feisty, a child who loved dressing up but wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. A beacon of joy in her family’s life, she shared an unshakable bond with her older brother, Daryn. But in April 2009, just days after moving into a new home full of hope and excitement, Tori vanished on her way home from school—a route she had never walked alone before.
What began as an ordinary day for the Stafford family quickly spiraled into a nightmare of unanswered questions, haunting surveillance footage, and a desperate search. Tonight, in Part 1 of The Murder of Tori Stafford, we’ll explore Tori’s early life, the day of her disappearance, and the relentless efforts to bring her home. Along the way, we’ll uncover the ominous signs that something far more sinister was at play.
Grab your coffee, turn off the lights, and lock your doors—this is a story that will grip your heart and haunt your thoughts long after the episode ends. Let’s begin

John J. Malone was nursing a gin and tonic at the Club Royale. He’d barely taken his first sip when Helene Brand stormed in, all perfume and panic.
“Malone, you’ve got to help me,” she said. “It’s Roger.” Roger Fairfax, the millionaire playboy and Helene’s off-and-on fiancé, had been in the papers more often than not. “He’s dead!’”
“I threw a little gathering last night—just a few close friends, nothing out of the ordinary. Roger was supposed to come, but he never showed. Or at least, I didn’t think he did. I went to bed around midnight. This morning, I found him... slumped over in the cocktail lounge. Dead. There was a half-empty martini glass in his hand, and he looked like he’d been there all night.”
