But the case was hijacked by none other than the Duke of Windsor—formerly King Edward VIII—who bypassed local authorities and installed two shady detectives from Miami to lead the investigation. Within hours, they had a suspect.
Their scapegoat? Alfred de Marigny, Oakes’s son-in-law—a dashing, rebellious playboy who had married Oakes’s daughter against his wishes. The key evidence? A single, perfect fingerprint.
But there was just one problem... it was a fake.
In The Duke’s Shadow (Part 2), we uncovered how the case against de Marigny fell apart. The fingerprint was planted. The crime scene was tampered with. Key evidence vanished. De Marigny was acquitted, but instead of reopening the investigation, authorities shut the case down. No one else was ever charged.
