One's Too Many - Be careful who you laugh at with Boyd Renner
play

09/05/18 • 39 min

Today’s show we have an amazing guest named Boyd Renner joining us today. He is a soon to be Alumni from Penn State’s MBA program, a Co-Founder of a startup, and 23-year member of the NSW’s prestigious Development Group.
In today’s episode we go over what it takes to get through BUDS and what your mindset should be when going through while tackling what they do to help combat depression and suicide. According to Boyd it is a problem with every unit in the military, even the best still struggle through sometimes.
Among the many different strategies used, talking about it is the main way to help someone you think might be off. It may suck, you may even loose a friend. In the end though, which is worse losing a friend for asking/confronting them about what they’re going through, or losing them once they choose to complete suicide. We learn that no matter who you are you go through some stuff. Sometimes just pulling people aside and shooting the s***, getting a coffee, or whatever goes such a long way.
“Get out, have a plan before hand, and find that tribe”
As many of us know, once you get out, it isn’t all a piece of cake. We learn more about finding a new tribe to replace the one that you left and how to make that one part of your life. We learn a lot about difficulties once you get out from his perspective and how doing something every day to make himself better has kept him grounded. Giving back is always a fantastic idea, as we learn about a walk coming up soon for Cystic Fibrosis. Everyone should check out his and his wife’s page, please donate if you can, share if you can’t. Every dollar helps go to an amazing cause.
Have you ever wanted to stay connected to whatever motivates or inspires you? Look no further than Everence, it is a product designed by Endeavor Life Sciences that will allow you to get a tattoo with the DNA of your wife, child, dog, battle buddy, or whoever. How better to commemorate this part of your life than get a tattoo? You know you love tattoos just as much as I do, not it is time to show it.
Keys
1.Never underestimate yourself
2.Never let others underestimate you, if they do use it to your advantage
3.Don’t be afraid to ask

One's Too Many - Don't let the bad guys win with Brad
play

08/30/18 • 30 min

This week we have a guy who must have burned through all 9 of his lives. This episode’s guest we have Brad. He was a twenty year veteran, four which were in in B Co. 3/75th Ranger bat, four years in ranger reconnaissance detachment, and eleven in USASOC Combat Applications Group. Since getting out he has spent time working on his music. He plays in a band called Silence and Light, who are actually about to release an album which all the proceeds from it will go to one of the nonprofits he works with.
So, this episode I am proud to bring you what my battalion CO referred to as “one of the rock stars of the military.” His name is Brad. We go over many different things, from why he came into the military to why he went through ranger and then selection. Mindset plays a key role in his life. What makes you you? Is it 100% your job (be it military, police, fire department, or EMS), or are you a mixture of every mask you wear? If you believe it is the former, you might have a problem when you get out. Luckily if you recognize the stages you go through when you transition, you are better able and prepared to counteract them.
You can take this experience and justify beating your wife, becoming an alcoholic, or a drug addict because you’ve lived through this, but ultimately that is letting the bad guy win. “If I do something because of all of this, be it whatever it is, is allowing the bad guy to win in the long run.” You are stronger than what has happened to you. Don’t let whatever that is to beat you.
We finish up learning about how Brad uses music to help raise money for two nonprofits that do a lot of good, the Marine Raider Foundation and Warrior’s heart. This is only a taste of what we go over in this episode. Please tune in, and take the nuggets that Brad throws out to improve your life. Remember you matter, you’ve got this, and you’re not alone!
3 Keys
1. Reach out and connect with someone, tell someone you’re struggling
2. We all come from a community where people like to show their strong side, NO one thinks people are crazy and having flashbacks (this isn’t like post-Vietnam) or that it is weakness
3. As you go through the recovery process, find that thing/ purpose that you can love and out a lot of time into that is healthy, creative, and positive.

On today’s episode, we have my friend James Hintzke on with us. He was a 30-year veteran in the SEAL community as a demo guy. James is a pretty amazing guy, and he gives us some real nuggets. We go over a bunch of things that I wish I had known when I was transitioning. We learn about how important it is to fill your life with a positive environment, and how to find your triggers, while making an impact in your environment.
He tells us about his art with Valhalla’s Forge and the difference you can make in your community through so many different ways. He shares about his strategy of being a leader to the young men working with him, including transiting vets and gold star kids. James gives us a lot of good information about how to deal with what you are going through and how to give just give yourself a break sometimes.
Coming from many of our backgrounds, it is hard to be easy on ourselves, but sometimes it is exactly what we need. You had to redevelop yourself into something that is sustainable for you and into something that will keep allowing you to grow. We go over that and a lot more in this episode. Come listen and take away a couple of things that you can use in your struggles too.

Hey everyone and welcome to our first episode of One’s Too Many, the podcast dedicated to veterans and first responders. For our first episode we have a good friend of mine, Carlos Garcia coming on the show with us. He is a marine combat vet turned fire fighter turned psychologist, so he has seen the problems many of us have struggled through from both sides. In this episode we go over a bunch of different things from what Carlos struggled with, to what he has seen since starting to work with others, to what worked for him and what he has seen work with others. One of my favorite parts of this episode is he goes over what Post Tramatic Growth is and what he has found over the course of the past couple of years about it. It is an amazing perspective about what many of us go through and a good strategy to overcome PTSD. I would highly encourage anyone to do their own research on this as well, the more you know the more you can grow. These are only a very small amount of what we went over on this episode. I can’t wait for you to listen to it.

This week’s episode of Ones Too Many we have Rhodesian War Veteran, psychologist, author, and ultramarathoner Barry Zworestine. We cover a lot of topics today from the difference he has seen being drafted into the war, what he calls the “bandaid method, and we delve deeper into what he does to help his patients. He gives a lot of tips and tricks that he uses in his daily practice to help people through their “ambush zone,” while throwing out some advice about how he helps not only the patient he is seeing, but also their families.

Next we moved toward his book, “Which Way is Your Claymore Facing.” We discuss why he wrote it, what he has learned from it, and what you will take from reading it. This wasn’t written to make money, it is for sell on Amazon for the minimum (who knew they had a minimum price...) $0.99 for the Ebook and $4.00 for the hard copy. It is a book filled with core wisdom. It focuses on how to stay coherent when you hit a wall by using: core lessons, core techniques, core strategies, operational neuroscience, tools to bring into your relationship. If you are struggling you are doing yourself a disservice by not checking this out. A link is posted below.

3 Keys

1. Keep yourself busy, throw yourself into something new to stimulate yourself, you don’t have to be passionate about that particular thing, just get started

2. If you’re trying to transition out of a old group, it might be helpful to distance yourself for a little bit from the people in that group. Are your relationships with your old tribe the reason you can’t move on?

3. Understand that civilians that haven’t lived what you have can not understand you and you shouldn’t expect them to. Don't expect your service and what you have done to give you anything more than just a foot in the door

4. If you’re struggling find a goal, set a goal, work towards it, start making positive steps that reinforce your self esteem again

For today’s guest, we are very excited to bring you the real Rudy Reyes. From MMA, to many tours in Afghanistan and Iraq with the Marine’s 1st Recon Battalion, to your TV, and finally to conservation sites all over the world this man has done it all.
I really enjoyed this my conversation with this man. It changed the way I thought about myself and others. We go over a lot of good stuff, from the journey from selfless to self-love, to finding your new purpose, and how to fight off the tendency to isolate when it comes up. We go over what was difficult for Rudy to handle when getting out, his nonprofit work with Force Blue, and the greatest lesson he learned since leaving the Recon community.
Listen to what Rudy has to tell you, I know it is going to change your perspective. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did. Please feel free to leave us a comment and let us know what you think.

Have you ever wondered what you should do after you get that magical DD 214? Have you ever just been floating by while burning through your GI bill? Today we had a very special guest on with us, who can give you his story which will hopefully give you some ideas on what to make with your story. His name is Fred Rodger. He is a marine combat veteran. After getting out he has gotten his MBA, help create and open dozens of franchises, started a nonprofit, opened his own consulting firm, and currently is the director of marketing and outreach for a early stage investment company called the Bricks. There was so much good information given out in this, we’ve had to split our conversation into 2 parts just so we didn’t miss anything.
By a trick of fate, we unfortunately lost the first five minutes of this conversation due to technical problems, but don’t worry it only gets better. In part one (where the recording starts here at least) we go over some things to look for when picking a school after the military, how to get a more advanced internship (unless of course you really like to get coffee and make copies all day), and even what to look for when you are researching a company. We then find out how someone can move from the normal MBA path to start working with franchises fairly quickly.
“Take your health into your own hands”
We talk about challenges he struggled through when getting out and until he worked through them and to the incident that led him to realize he needed help. Meds have a time and place in our lives, but as you know and Fred points out, there is a real downsize that causes many of us to avoid them at all costs. There are so many different services out there that you can utilize that I was unaware of.
• Veterans Choice Program - www.va.gov/COMMUNITYCARE/programs/veterans/VCP/index.asp
• Vet Centers - www.vetcenter.va.gov
• Local Outreach Facilities
• Give an Hour - www.giveanhour.org
o An amazing organization Fred discusses where mental health professionals from around the country volunteer their time every week through many different mediums to vets and first responders that need it. You are able to vet your provider to make sure you get the right person who has the right background (PTSD, sexual trauma, ect..). Please check this out, it is FREE to you.
Please check out part 2 in episode 3 to hear the rest of the story! Thank you for checking us out.

This episode is packed with nuggets from his personal journey that will absolutely bring value to your own journey. You will learn how Fred saw a need in his community to change veterans lives by helping start The Veterans Trust. They then used that platform to help change education for our community by giving us a one stop shop kind of deal using their access, placement, completion model. We go over how they helped the Mission United program become what it is today operating in 21 separate counties with forty to fifty more being created. We learn how they started with two people being invited to a race track to having a national presence throughout multiple different tracks into getting veterans taught to drive race cars.
We then learn about how, with the mentorship of a top Virgin (Virgin as in Richard Branson’s Virgin you sick f***s) executive he helped start a early stage investment company focused on vets. They actually require one of the founders or top management spots be a veteran. We go over what exactly they look for when choosing what company each month gets their funding and then the incubation help afterwards. This will help anyone going through any stage in their own startups who think they might need some sort of funding in the future (because who doesn’t eventually need funding, right?).
If you’re in the process of building a business, have thought about it, or already have built one you should definitely check this one out. There are so many little nuances that I haven’t thought about on my own journey I am sure it will benefit and bring value to you as well. Please check out their site if you think your business is ready to be funded or to see what you have left to work on.
You can reach out to them and what their doing by checking these out.

Finally, Fred’s 3 pieces of advice to someone struggling in their own journey.
1. Find a mentor – he can’t stress this enough
2. Find a social network/group to engage with
a. Veteran(or first responder of course) or civilian – shooting club or book club it doesn’t matter what
3. Find a way to express yourself
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
