In today’s episode we go over what it takes to get through BUDS and what your mindset should be when going through while tackling what they do to help combat depression and suicide. According to Boyd it is a problem with every unit in the military, even the best still struggle through sometimes.
Among the many different strategies used, talking about it is the main way to help someone you think might be off. It may suck, you may even loose a friend. In the end though, which is worse losing a friend for asking/confronting them about what they’re going through, or losing them once they choose to complete suicide. We learn that no matter who you are you go through some stuff. Sometimes just pulling people aside and shooting the s***, getting a coffee, or whatever goes such a long way.
“Get out, have a plan before hand, and find that tribe”
As many of us know, once you get out, it isn’t all a piece of cake. We learn more about finding a new tribe to replace the one that you left and how to make that one part of your life. We learn a lot about difficulties once you get out from his perspective and how doing something every day to make himself better has kept him grounded. Giving back is always a fantastic idea, as we learn about a walk coming up soon for Cystic Fibrosis. Everyone should check out his and his wife’s page, please donate if you can, share if you can’t. So, this episode I am proud to bring you what my battalion CO referred to as “one of the rock stars of the military.” His name is Brad. We go over many different things, from why he came into the military to why he went through ranger and then selection. Mindset plays a key role in his life. What makes you you? Is it 100% your job (be it military, police, fire department, or EMS), or are you a mixture of every mask you wear? If you believe it is the former, you might have a problem when you get out. Luckily if you recognize the stages you go through when you transition, you are better able and prepared to counteract them.
You can take this experience and justify beating your wife, becoming an alcoholic, or a drug addict because you’ve lived through this, but ultimately that is letting the bad guy win. “If I do something because of all of this, be it whatever it is, is allowing the bad guy to win in the long run.” You are stronger than what has happened to you. Don’t let whatever that is to beat you.
We finish up learning about how Brad uses music to help raise money for two nonprofits that do a lot of good, the Marine Raider Foundation and Warrior’s heart. He shares about his strategy of being a leader to the young men working with him, including transiting vets and gold star kids. James gives us a lot of good information about how to deal with what you are going through and how to give just give yourself a break sometimes.
Coming from many of our backgrounds, it is hard to be easy on ourselves, but sometimes it is exactly what we need. You had to redevelop yourself into something that is sustainable for you and into something that will keep allowing you to grow. We go over that and a lot more in this episode. This week’s episode of Ones Too Many we have Rhodesian War Veteran, psychologist, author, and ultramarathoner Barry Zworestine. We cover a lot of topics today from the difference he has seen being drafted into the war, what he calls the “bandaid method, and we delve deeper into what he does to help his patients. He gives a lot of tips and tricks that he uses in his daily practice to help people through their “ambush zone,” while throwing out some advice about how he helps not only the patient he is seeing, but also their families.
Next we moved toward his book, “Which Way is Your Claymore Facing.” We discuss why he wrote it, what he has learned from it, and what you will take from reading it. This wasn’t written to make money, it is for sell on Amazon for the minimum (who knew they had a minimum price...) $0.99 for the Ebook and $4.00 for the hard copy. It is a book filled with core wisdom. It focuses on how to stay coherent when you hit a wall by using: core lessons, core techniques, core strategies, operational neuroscience, tools to bring into your relationship. 1. Keep yourself busy, throw yourself into something new to stimulate yourself, you don’t have to be passionate about that particular thing, just get started
2. If you’re trying to transition out of a old group, it might be helpful to distance yourself for a little bit from the people in that group. Are your relationships with your old tribe the reason you can’t move on?
3. Understand that civilians that haven’t lived what you have can not understand you and you shouldn’t expect them to. Don't expect your service and what you have done to give you anything more than just a foot in the door
4. If you’re struggling find a goal, set a goal, work towards it, start making positive steps that reinforce your self esteem again

I really enjoyed this my conversation with this man. It changed the way I thought about myself and others. We go over a lot of good stuff, from the journey from selfless to self-love, to finding your new purpose, and how to fight off the tendency to isolate when it comes up. We go over what was difficult for Rudy to handle when getting out, his nonprofit work with Force Blue, and the greatest lesson he learned since leaving the Recon community.

By a trick of fate, we unfortunately lost the first five minutes of this conversation due to technical problems, but don’t worry it only gets better. In part one (where the recording starts here at least) we go over some things to look for when picking a school after the military, how to get a more advanced internship (unless of course you really like to get coffee and make copies all day), and even what to look for when you are researching a company. We then find out how someone can move from the normal MBA path to start working with franchises fairly quickly.

We talk about challenges he struggled through when getting out and until he worked through them and to the incident that led him to realize he needed help. Meds have a time and place in our lives, but as you know and Fred points out, there is a real downsize that causes many of us to avoid them at all costs. There are so many different services out there that you can utilize that I was unaware of.

We then learn about how, with the mentorship of a top Virgin (Virgin as in Richard Branson’s Virgin you sick f***s) executive he helped start a early stage investment company focused on vets. They actually require one of the founders or top management spots be a veteran. We go over what exactly they look for when choosing what company each month gets their funding and then the incubation help afterwards. This will help anyone going through any stage in their own startups who think they might need some sort of funding in the future (because who doesn’t eventually need funding, right?).
If you’re in the process of building a business, have thought about it, or already have built one you should definitely check this one out. There are so many little nuances that I haven’t thought about on my own journey I am sure it will benefit and bring value to you as well.
