Nostalgia Street

On Nostalgia Street episode 6, we sat down with Nichelle Lund who works as the Corporate Sales Manager for The Holiday Inn in Sioux Falls. We kick off the episode with a rapid fire question:‘Of all the boy bands and girl bands you’ve listened to, if you were to create your own, who would be your first and last pick?

We then asked Nichelle about her extensive involvement in various community and professional organizations.

The conversation took a humorous turn as we discussed various activities and interests. Nichelle shares a memorable camping experience from her childhood during a tropical storm that turned into a hurricane. The story involved her family, friends, a mix-up in tents, and a mistaken intruder in the middle of the night. Nichelle’s family sought refuge on a shrimp boat to ride out the storm and later returned to find their tent had fallen.

The discussion then shifted to favorite board games, with Monopoly being mentioned as a beloved game that sometimes resulted in intense and lengthy sessions that occasionally could end in a table being flipped over.

The conversation then took a lighthearted turn as we reminisced about being picked last for teams in school and speculated about how it may impact individuals' lives. We discussed our first crushes, with Nichelle sharing a memory from third grade when she had her first boyfriend, Dustin.

The conversation then shifted to popular TV shows in Nichelle’s household, including Nickelodeon favorites like Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Doug, and shows like All That, featuring the iconic "Dancing Lobsters." She recalled enjoying Disney Channel original movies in middle school.

Nichelle recounted a story from her senior year of high school when she pursued a boy who was dating a sophomore, strategically inserting herself into his life to break them up and eventually succeeded. The story took on a humorous and movie-like quality as the guest describes her mission to win the boy's affection.

The conversation then moved to Nichelle’s career history and we asked about spooky or sorted hotel stories. Nichelle shared a spooky story about a ghost in one of their hotels, believed to be a woman who had a tragic incident in one of the rooms. The spirit was often seen near the elevator and occasionally in the room. She also recounted a sorted incident involving an affair between a man, Red Bull, vodka, and Viagra, resulting in a tragic outcome that attracted the attention of the police and a furious spouse.

The conversation touched on Nichelle’s encounters with famous people at hotels, including Elvis Presley, presidents, musicians, and WWE/WWEF stars. She mentioned her encounter with John Cena, who asked for a room during a sold-out night.

When we asked Nichelle about memories from her past that have affected her as an adult; she shared a memorable college experience from her art appreciation teacher who encouraged students not to focus on material possessions but to travel and experience the world. This philosophy resonated with her, and she appreciates the idea of giving people a great experience, as exemplified by the stories she shared earlier about making people feel included in her work.

We wrapped up the podcast with Nichelle sharing two of her favorite travel experiences: a bourbon-tasting trip along the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky with her husband and a solo trip to Banff, Canada, where she met new friends and emphasized the value of experiences in her life.

We appreciate Nichelle’s contribution to the local community and her commitment to making people feel welcome.

How Monopoly Shaped My Life

In a recent podcast episode, we engaged in a delightful conversation about shared childhood memories with Maggie Miller. We touched on various topics, including Legos, sibling dynamics, music, and the era of CDs, VHS tapes, and cassette tapes. Here are some of the highlights from our conversation.

Lego Love: Back in the day, Maggie had a special place in her heart for Legos. She remembers spending hours building and creating with these iconic building blocks. Today, her mom still has those Legos, and her six-year-old nephew Isaac enjoys playing with them at her house. It's heartwarming to see the tradition continue.

Sibling Dynamics: Being the older sibling, Maggie admitted to some playful teasing of her younger brother. It was all in good fun until he grew bigger and stronger, just as her parents had predicted. The rivalry mellowed out naturally, and they both turned out just fine. No lasting trauma!

Music Memories: We delved into our eclectic music taste, shaped by our parents, classmates, and the radio. Our conversation revolved around how the music of the '90s and early 2000s differed from our childhood influences, but our love for music remains a constant source of joy.

As we shared stories about our CD collections, we reminisced about the era of CDs and the challenges of six-CD changers. My first CDs included classics like Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" and Brandy's "Sitting Up in My Room."

Nostalgia for VHS Tapes: In a discussion that evoked memories of VHS tapes, we shared our most-watched VHS tapes. "Top Gun" emerged as one of the favorites, highlighting the enduring appeal of classic '80s movies and baby names inspired by nostalgic movies.

Life lessons learned from the game of Monopoly: Don’t take things personal, pay your rent, sell when you can, the first offer is usually the best and take your money to the bathroom with you.

Celebrity idols and peer pressure: Maggie reminisces on Britney Spears’ influence on pom poms worn in girls’ hair. Other than that, Maggie shared that she was more of a tomboy and played most sports.

Something fun that Maggie and her friends would do is drive around in the country, listening to a specific romantic radio station where people would send in recorded love messages. She and her friends enjoyed making fun of the love messages. Jeff and Maggie both remember the drama of listening to top 40s on the radio along with songs that were banned by their parents.

The conversation then took a turn to Maggie’s career in real estate. She shared how her house-buying experience in 2008 led her to pursue a career in real estate. She believed that if she couldn’t be successful when the market was down, she wouldn’t be cut out for the industry and together we decided that must have been influenced by her Monopoly-playing days.

We finished up our conversation talking about small town pride, our favorite songs to play on the jukebox (not the digital kind!) and regrets from our past.

undefined - How Scouting Led To Success

How Scouting Led To Success

In our conversation with Jeff Hayward, Program Manager at Startup Sioux Falls, we discussed a variety of topics from our childhoods, including how being a boy scout led Jeff to start his own business, Dakota Adventure Supply to our favorite movies, music and more.

With two Jeffs featured on the show, we took care to specify the particular Jeff to whom we were referring!

We kicked off the conversation with one of Vince’s random questions regarding how well a scout troop could be led by either Captain America, Superman, or Yogi Bear.

We discussed other memorable scenes from "Back to the Future," Jeff H’s family's love for oldies music, and songs that stick in our heads. The conversation also touched on movies with multiple sequels, including "The NeverEnding Story" and "Star Trek." We noticed a theme of time travel in Jeff’s movie preferences.

We talked about our favorite "Star Trek" characters, the first live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, and childhood memories related to those films. The conversation then took a turn to breakfast foods, specifically pancakes and unique breakfast preferences. One of the unique breakfast preferences we talked about was putting sugar in pancakes rather than syrup. We talked about different breakfast traditions and the creative ways people prepare breakfast foods. We reminisced on memories of important life skills our fathers taught us including driving a stick shift and cooking. This part of our conversation was filled with anecdotes and personal memories.

Jeff H. discusses his experience as a Boy Scout and his journey to becoming an Eagle Scout. Vince shares a humorous story about almost hitting his mom with an arrow while practicing archery during a Cub Scout camp. The conversation also touches on Scout fundraisers, including pancake feeds and popcorn sales. Jeff H. recalls a valuable life lesson he learned as a young senior patrol leader, where he had to deal with older Scouts not listening to him, leading to him learning to handle uncomfortable situations. We playfully mentioned "submission hold badges" and inquired about Jeff H.’s favorite and least favorite merit badges. Jeff H. also talked about how his experiences as a Boy Scout influenced his journey into entrepreneurship. The conversation touches on the importance of mentorship, seeking advice, and being open to learning as an entrepreneur. The guest also discusses his startup, Dakota Adventure Supply, which focuses on creating durable and versatile outdoor gear made in South Dakota.

The conversation then turned to a discussion on the importance of being open to criticism and constructive feedback. Jeff P. shares a story about a surgeon who received valuable advice from an older surgeon, highlighting the significance of learning from others' experiences. The conversation touches on generational differences, specifically regarding the level of comfort and instant access to information in today's society. Jeff H. shared a story about a formative experience he had during a youth leadership training program in the Boy Scouts, emphasizing the value of facing challenges and figuring things out.

When Jeff H. shared about Dakota Adventure Supply, he spoke about the significance of reconnecting with nature and creating experiences in the modern world. We then exchanged patches that represent camaraderie and adventure and concluded the nostalgic conversation.
