In Nostalgia Street Episode 8, we engaged in a lighthearted discussion with our guest, Joe Batcheller, the President of Downtown Sioux Falls. The conversation kicked off with one of Vince’s random questions about drafting members of the band U2 as characters in a Dungeons and Dragons game. Joe humorously assigned roles to different band members based on their personalities.
As the conversation unfolded, we delved into Joe's childhood, asking about his experiences and memories. Joe shared stories of his imaginative and mischievous behavior as a five-year-old, including an incident involving an attempted flight out of a window. The conversation then turned to childhood games, such as Atari video games, board games like Monopoly and Clue, and an invented game called "Ditch 'Em," which is a team hide and seek.
We inquired about any haunted or abandoned places in Joe's childhood neighborhood, and the conversation took a nostalgic turn as we reminisced about neighborhood legends, like the infamous "old man Foster." Joe continued with a humorous reflection on the Scooby-Doo characters, comparing himself to both Fred and Shaggy depending on the day of the week.
We then reflected on the sitcom "Gilligan's Island" and the amusing scenario of someone escaping the island but the rest remaining stuck due to incompetence. We shared memories of characters like the professor and Marianne.
Joe then delved into early experiences with romance, reminiscing about his first girlfriend in first grade or kindergarten. We discussed the simplicity of childhood relationships, involving candy and holding hands at recess.
Next, we explored Joe's musical journey, starting with his introduction to punk and new wave music through mixtapes made by his cousins. Joe recalled his exploration of music stores in the mall, buying tapes and CDs, and creating mixtapes for special occasions, especially to express romantic interest.
Joe shared his evolving music preferences, from classic rock (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) to grunge (Nirvana, Beastie Boys, Green Day). Joe shared his preference to the '90s as a musical decade and his first concert, which was Metallica during the "Injustice For All" album tour.
The conversation then took a turn as we asked about childhood games and pranks. Joe recalled making prank calls, including a reverse prank call that sometimes caught people off guard and getting caught by his grandfather. He shared a story of consuming alcohol underage and the disappointment he felt when his father found out.
Vince then asked about Joe's formative years, discussing influential adults and mentors in his life. Joe reflected on friends who served as positive role models. He also credited his high school algebra teacher and soccer coach, Steve Cornish, for instilling a growth mindset and teaching valuable life lessons. Joe then shared his journey in urban planning, highlighting the influence of his advisor, who taught him valuable skills in writing and problem-solving during his master's program. He reflected on the importance of mentors and how certain individuals have shaped his growth. Joe then shared more about his role with Downtown Sioux Falls (DTSF) and the factors that led them to this position, including a desire to be closer to family. He talked about the growth and development of downtown Sioux Falls, emphasizing the impact of increased residential living and the changing retail scene.
Joe then touched on challenges faced and future plans for DTSF, including efforts to support and develop local retail. The conversation concluded with Joe sharing childhood aspirations, lessons learned from experiences, and his vision for the future of downtown Sioux Falls, including potential developments in the Sioux Steel District.

How To Survive A Hurricane
Nostalgia Street
11/07/23 • 47 min
On Nostalgia Street episode 6, we sat down with Nichelle Lund who works as the Corporate Sales Manager for The Holiday Inn in Sioux Falls. We kick off the episode with a rapid fire question:‘Of all the boy bands and girl bands you’ve listened to, if you were to create your own, who would be your first and last pick?
We then asked Nichelle about her extensive involvement in various community and professional organizations.
The conversation took a humorous turn as we discussed various activities and interests. Nichelle shares a memorable camping experience from her childhood during a tropical storm that turned into a hurricane. The story involved her family, friends, a mix-up in tents, and a mistaken intruder in the middle of the night. Nichelle’s family sought refuge on a shrimp boat to ride out the storm and later returned to find their tent had fallen.
The discussion then shifted to favorite board games, with Monopoly being mentioned as a beloved game that sometimes resulted in intense and lengthy sessions that occasionally could end in a table being flipped over.
The conversation then took a lighthearted turn as we reminisced about being picked last for teams in school and speculated about how it may impact individuals' lives. We discussed our first crushes, with Nichelle sharing a memory from third grade when she had her first boyfriend, Dustin.
The conversation then shifted to popular TV shows in Nichelle’s household, including Nickelodeon favorites like Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, Doug, and shows like All That, featuring the iconic "Dancing Lobsters." She recalled enjoying Disney Channel original movies in middle school.
Nichelle recounted a story from her senior year of high school when she pursued a boy who was dating a sophomore, strategically inserting herself into his life to break them up and eventually succeeded. The story took on a humorous and movie-like quality as the guest describes her mission to win the boy's affection.
The conversation then moved to Nichelle’s career history and we asked about spooky or sorted hotel stories. Nichelle shared a spooky story about a ghost in one of their hotels, believed to be a woman who had a tragic incident in one of the rooms. The spirit was often seen near the elevator and occasionally in the room. She also recounted a sorted incident involving an affair between a man, Red Bull, vodka, and Viagra, resulting in a tragic outcome that attracted the attention of the police and a furious spouse.
The conversation touched on Nichelle’s encounters with famous people at hotels, including Elvis Presley, presidents, musicians, and WWE/WWEF stars. She mentioned her encounter with John Cena, who asked for a room during a sold-out night.
When we asked Nichelle about memories from her past that have affected her as an adult; she shared a memorable college experience from her art appreciation teacher who encouraged students not to focus on material possessions but to travel and experience the world. This philosophy resonated with her, and she appreciates the idea of giving people a great experience, as exemplified by the stories she shared earlier about making people feel included in her work.
We wrapped up the podcast with Nichelle sharing two of her favorite travel experiences: a bourbon-tasting trip along the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky with her husband and a solo trip to Banff, Canada, where she met new friends and emphasized the value of experiences in her life.
We appreciate Nichelle’s contribution to the local community and her commitment to making people feel welcome.

Screams, Psychology, and Generational Differences
Nostalgia Street
01/16/24 • 51 min
In Nostalgia Street episode 16, we embarked on a journey of nostalgia and childhood memories. Vince kicked off the conversation with a hypothetical scenario – organizing a Christmas quartet with historical musicians. Christina chose a quartet consisting of Keith Urban, the Dixie Chicks (now the Chicks), Garth Brooks, and the singer of Red Solo Cup.
As the podcast unfolded, Christina shared stories from her childhood in Genoa, Wisconsin. Christina grew up in a small town with six students in her first-grade class. Christina revealed the self-sufficient and adventurous nature of her early years that came from her upbringing. Some of her memories included swimming in pools with cows and hunting for mushrooms.
One standout memory involved Christina's father bringing home a little red mini bike. She and her siblings would take turns riding the mini bike, sometimes leading to playful disputes. She shared some specific adventures they had with the bike, including running out of gas. Christina also shared a humorous incident when her brother's girlfriend popped a wheelie.
We asked Christina if she got into any trouble in her younger years and she shared that she learned from her older siblings' mistakes. Describing herself as the quiet one who played with dolls, Christina emphasized that she worked hard to stay out of trouble.
The conversation shifted to Christina's Wisconsin upbringing, exploring the styles and trends that shaped her teenage years. We delved into the world of 90s fashion, reminiscing about iconic brands like IZOD, Polo, Jordache, and Gerbeau. Christina shared some of the must-have items that included folded and rolled jeans and high-top Reeboks.
A surprising revelation about Christina's teenage years was her love for rap and hip-hop. She reminisced about cruising through town in her Ford Escort with Rockford Fosgate speakers blaring. Some of her favorite jams were NWA, Salt N Pepa, Vanilla Ice, and 2 Live Crew. We chuckled at the image of Christina's car rattling from the bass vibrations.
As the conversation continued, Christina touched on her interest in psychology. She expressed fascination with understanding human behavior, nature, and nurture. Initially majoring in psychology in college, Christina later switched to business, realizing the extensive education required for a psychology career.
Jeff shared some of his experiences with psychology, including a strategy on dealing with stress. He shared that he and his co-workers would use the walk-in cooler as a place to let out their frustrations.
We then discussed Christina’s career path, revealing a shift from psychology to a focus on human resources. Christina recounted her first job in a staffing agency and the diverse experiences it offered. She emphasized the importance of finding fulfillment in one's career and helping others discover their passion.
We talked about the substantial changes in the field of human resources, specifically in recruiting. Christina reflected on her early days as a recruiter and the challenges of sifting through countless applicants. She shared about the generational shifts in work ethic and the need for organizations to adapt to these shifts.
Christina also touched upon the global perspective of work. In countries like Germany, the emphasis on quality of life over work is more pronounced.
We ended the conversation with a reflection on past predictions about the future. Movies we'd watched in the past led us to believe we'd have flying cars and robots by now. This podcast is a nostalgic journey through personal and societal changes. It offers listeners a rich and diverse exploration of work and evolving trends.

Nostalgic Memories From the 80s with Pete Kleinjan
Nostalgia Street
10/17/23 • 50 min
In our recent discussion with Pete Kleinjan in Nostalgia Street Episode 2, Jeff begins the podcast with a hypothetical scenario involving three iconic individuals: Mike Ditka, Mike Tyson, and Michael Jackson.
"If Mike Ditka, Mike Tyson, and Michael Jackson, at any age, walk into a ring, what happens?" The hosts agree it's a bit of a stalemate. While many might assume that Mike Tyson would knock out the competition, there's a humorous notion that Michael Jackson would dance around the ring. It's also suggested that it's impossible to knock out Mike Ditka, the legendary football coach. This fun scenario sets the stage for an engaging conversation.
We introduced our guest, Pete Kleinjan, a long-time friend of the studio and an SEO expert with a wealth of experience.
Childhood Memories: Pete reminisces about growing up on a farm, surrounded by four brothers and numerous cousins. Their days were filled with hard work and fun, and they played with square bales, a common sight on the farm. It was a time filled with togetherness, bike rides, and baseball in the yard. The hosts share a laugh about childhood memories, such as that one sibling who always cheated in games.
Creative Childhood Games: We discussed how we’d combine various sports or activities to invent their own unique games, even if they didn't make much sense in hindsight. The atmosphere of childhood creativity and the joy of making up games is fondly recalled.
Growing Up Without Cable TV: Pete shares his upbringing on the farm, highlighting that they didn't have cable TV. He humorously mentions that he grew up with just four channels, known as the "big three" – ABC, CBS, and NBC, along with PBS. He explains that he often served as the "remote control" for the family.
Cuffed Pants and Strange Fashion Trends: The conversation turns to the strange and intriguing fashion trends of their youth. We discuss the phenomenon of folding up the hems or cuffs of our pants, a trend that, even to this day, is somewhat baffling.
With a sense of amusement and curiosity, we contemplate whether it came from the East Coast, West Coast, or perhaps even a famous figure like Cindy Crawford. Peer pressure and the desire to fit in with friends at school seemed to be the driving force behind this fashion trend.
We mention that we wouldn't be surprised if the trend of cuffed pants made a comeback. Indeed, the cyclical nature of fashion means that trends from the past often find their way back into the present.
The podcast segues into a conversation about Pete’s life-size Michael Jordan poster, soggy cereal and A-Tracks.
Vince then shares a story about falsely accusing his brother and using his language skills to escape grounding, and it’s quite relatable. Many of us have childhood memories that involve a bit of mischief or a clever way to avoid consequences. These experiences shape us and teach us valuable life lessons.
Jeff and Pete also share memories of growing up, getting in trouble and punishments used by their parents.
We often look back on these memories from our youth with a mix of nostalgia, amusement and the occasional blush of embarrassment. These anecdotes remind us of how our formative years have shaped our present selves.
We continue the conversation by reflecting on how we shopped from catalogs, our favorite 80s music, including the Super Mario Bros theme song.
Jeff then decides to take the conversation to a deeper level where he asks the other two if they could go back, if there’s anything they’d change. This leads into a conversation of whether you’d want to change what happened in the past or if it is something to be grateful for because it’s what brought you to where they are today.
The conversation then turns to how childhood felt like the “good old days” and how there are aspects that we wish had stayed the same, for example, how small communities come together during hardships.
This podcast episode really brings out an appreciation for the lessons learned and the value in sharing cherished memories.

What If The Moon Landing Was Fake?
Nostalgia Street
01/23/24 • 46 min
In the latest episode of the Nostalgia Street podcast, hosts Vince and Jeff embark on a comical journey through time. The duo explores ChatGPT-generated scenarios, imagining a world without the moon landing, the Chernobyl disaster, or even the breakup of iconic duos like Wham. Laughter ensues as they ponder the possibility of being born in space, discuss the legitimacy of the moon landing, and contemplate the impact of the Beatles staying together.
Vince chooses the release of the first Harry Potter book, exploring the absence of Quidditch and the ban of witchcraft in schools.
Vince and Jeff playfully struggle to recall names of celebrities associated with SNL. Jeff brings up the influence of MTV in the '80s, including the perception that it was "music of the devil" according to his mother.
Jeff reminisces on memories of the Y2K panic, a time when people were stockpiling canned goods and preparing for the apocalypse. The panic was caused by people thinking that computers would go haywire when the clock struck midnight on January 1st, 2000. And then there was the Mayan calendar predicting the end of the world in 2012. People were expecting catastrophic events, but instead, it just marked the release of some blockbuster movies. From comets to planetary alignments, there's always been someone predicting the end of the world.
Jeff and Vince note that now we've got new concerns like climate change and pandemics, and appreciate that at least we can look back and laugh at the times when we thought Y2K would bring about the apocalypse.
Speaking of laughs, the hosts bring up the comedy gold that came out of the whole Area 51 raid craze. People creating Facebook events to storm the secretive military base in search of aliens.
The hosts explore the influence of celebrities and musicians in shaping movements like Live Aid, We Are the World, and the Red Program. They touch upon political scenarios, pondering how different presidents might have altered the course of history. The discussion also extends to technological advancements, including the development of cameras, the Tetris game, and the rise of sneaker culture with the iconic Air Jordans.
Jeff and Vince conclude with personal anecdotes, reflecting on pivotal moments in their lives and the butterfly effect of small decisions.
