Dinner Dialogue: Addison Wants A Later Curfew
Navigating Joy Together
02/20/25 • 29 min
This topic came up at the end of our dinner time. Addison announced she wanted to talk about something. This is the usual in the Raymond Household. Important topics come up during our dinner time. I pulled out my phone and started the voice recorder.
She pitched us in making her curfew later...to 12:30 or sometimes to 1:00 am.
What are her reasons?
She wants to practice time management before she goes to college in a year and a half.
How do Mark and I respond?
We have similar responses however we do disagree in some parts of this. With that being said, curfew is a struggle for us because Addison does not always have a set plan of what her friends and her are doing. We do not want her driving all around town at night so how do we come up with an appropriate curfew time?
She has to have more of a solidified plan of what she is doing in order for us to be comfortable making her curfew later. And it depends on what is happening the next day as well.
Listen in as to what we decide.
Our goal is to make sure everyone is feeling good at the end of the conversation, to avoid anger and frustration, and to keep navigating JOY in our household.
Please share this with ONE person who you know will take value in this. Someone who has teens or will soon have teens and wants to hear how we navigate these conversations.
Please share with us your thoughts, ideas and feedback!
We all learn from each other as PARENTING IS HARD!!!

A "Death Day" Party and JOY
Navigating Joy Together
11/30/23 • 43 min
In this episode, I have the privilege of talking to Tanya Hackney. Tanya graduated with a B.A. from Middlebury College in 1997, where she majored in English and double-minored in French and Education. She married her high school sweetheart and taught kindergarten in Atlanta, Georgia before transitioning to homeschooling her own five children aboard sailing vessel Take Two. She’s lived aboard, traveled, and written for the Take Two Sailing blog for the last fifteen years. She has always had a bad case of wanderlust, having taken countless road trips as a child, spent a semester in Paris during college, and honeymooned in Mexico. In 2021, she published an award-winning memoir, Leaving the Safe Harbor: the Risks and Rewards of Raising a Family on a Boat. In her free time, she plays the ukulele, paints landscapes, and kayaks
Our conversation is about life raising a family on a boat and how her family has found a way to find JOY among the difficulties of sailing and living on the sea.
Tanya also shares with us a wonderful story about her Mother-in-Law, Mary who lost her life to cancer. She shares how her family and friends celebrated with Mary during a "Death Day" party...before Mary passed and how they all felt JOY during a time of deep grief.
Finally, Tanya shares the important of gratitude and how that has helped her tap into JOY even during life's massive challenges.

Consciously Choosing JOY with Jenna Brocious
Navigating Joy Together
08/24/23 • 27 min
Jenna B is a wife, mother, and spiritually intuitive. Jenna has worn many hats in life trying to find her own purpose outside of the home. With a very supportive husband, Jenna had the time to sit and pray to find what she was meant to do. Jenna feels her purpose is to help, heal and spread love to others.
Jenna and I discuss what transpired in her life to lead her to consciously choose joy every single day. She shares that she asks for ease, flow, and grace every single morning and with this, JOY naturally comes. However, there are times that she gets thrown off, as we all do, and she has to start over again. This is what living consciously to choose JOY is all about!
Some of her go-to tools to get her back into JOY are playing some "fierce" Beyonce and dancing the negativity out of her. She also spends time working out. Moving her body is essential to keeping JOY at the forefront. She suggests if you are just starting out, go for a walk and listen to the birds.
Jenna also shares where and how her family fits into this focus of consciously living in JOY. As a family, they communicate all of their feelings all the time. She has her son tell his emotions, goes to a chart, and figure out how to work through it.
We also bring in our children to answer a few questions:
- What does Joy mean to you?
- Are you aware when you are not feeling happiness or joy?
- What is something that you do when you feel mad or sad to help you get happy again?
- What would you do if you saw a friend who was sad, mad, etc
- What is something you would tell your friends to help them be in a more joyful place?
Hear their perspectives on what JOY means and looks like to them.
One of the biggest takeaways I got from Jenna is what she says at the end. "The world is for you, not against you." What a great thought to focus on. This is when you can focus more on the little positives and find JOY daily.

Cultivating Joy in Children: Gratitude
Navigating Joy Together
04/06/23 • 12 min
In our series Cultivating Joy in Children, I talk about Gratitude. Why is it important for us to teach our children to be grateful?
Gratitude is a JOY creator!
Why do we want to teach our children gratitude?
1. Develop a feeling of empathy.
2. Teaches them to be more generous toward others.
Why is this beneficial?
1. Less stress
2. More Positive
3. Happier and more joyful
4. They will perform better at school
5. May not be as materialistic.
6. Will be able to cope better in difficult situations which will help when they get older.
7. Focus better
8. Have fewer health problems.
How do we do this?
1. Teach our children to say "Thank You".
2. Parents model this by telling their children why they are grateful for them.
3. Talk about things you are grateful for. You can use a jar and write down gratitudes or share at the dinner table one thing you are grateful for from the day.
4. Use nature.
So start now with yourself and your children!

Joy Through Art with Intention with Jennifer Colombo
Navigating Joy Together
12/19/24 • 36 min
Jennifer Faye Colombo is a watercolor artist living in Connecticut. Her intention is to give the viewer an opportunity to tune into calm, peace and joy through her various collections. Jen is super grateful to live near the water, her happy place that influences many of her paintings. In addition to painting, Jen creates journals and card decks to support others on their journey. A Pocket Full of Joy is one of her card decks created as reminders to find joy daily including the little moments.
Her Card Deck was written by accident after writing different affirmations and reminders for herself. If she needed the reminders to tap in and tune into joy daily, then others need that too. She always thought that JOY was the bigger thing in life, like our JOYFUL occasions but there are little things throughout the day that can bring us JOY and if we take a pause and start to notice them. Some examples: noticing the dew drops on the blade of grass or a delightful conversation can add up to big JOY moments!
You could just spend a few seconds to tap into JOY.
She loves sharing her paintings with others. Sharing her art with others is how she serves others in bringing JOY into their lives.
She creates general art and personal art for people. Her work has intentions behind it. Jen always asks her clients to set an intention with her of why they want her to work with them. Setting the intentions makes a deeper, more impactful feeling for those who view the art.
One general piece of art she shares with others are her ̈Joyful Bubble ̈ paintings. She receives lots of comments on how happy they make people. It brings back memories of playing with bubbles and a reminder to tune into those bubbles of joy.
She is the conduit to pass that joyful energy onto the page. Her clients and her are co-creating together even though she is the one doing the artwork.
She also creates creative exploration with others. She gets them to tap into their own creative flow. It can be artwork, or setting intentions. People find it relaxing, fun, playful and JOYFUL! Creating SHOULD be fun!
Jen always creates for herself to help her move through emotions. It is for her own pure JOY and entertainment.
How else does Jen tap into JOY when she is not in that flow?
- She pulls from her own card deck
- Painting
- Going down to the beach
- Put on music
- Dance partners
Her last piece of advice:
̈Everyday be conscious of cultivating JOY in your life. ̈
Ask the question:
What brings me JOY and can I do that today?
Such a powerful conversation with Jen!

Cultivating Joy in Children: How To Get Through Difficult Times
Navigating Joy Together
05/04/23 • 12 min
Life is filled with difficult times so let's teach our children how to get through them. If they learn now they will be able to get through difficult times successfully as adults and become less anxiety ridden.
In this episode I talk about the importance of why children need to know how to do this and how we can teach them to do this.
How do we teach them?
- Respect their feelings. Don't sugar coat them. Don't tell them it's no big deal, don't tell them let it go. Instead, validate how they are feeling. You can say something like, "I can see why you are sad".
- Identify feelings.
- Allow yourself to feel them.
- Talk about feelings.
- Identify the physiological changes in your body when you have a feeling change.
- How can we feel better.
- Make a list of what you can do to feel better.
- Imagine your favorite place
- Take a walk
- Get a drink of water
- Take deep breaths
- Count to 50
- Jumping Jacks
- Stretches
- Play a game
- Talk with someone you trust
- Use a fidget
- Draw
- Write in a journal
- Blow bubbles
- Read a funny book
- Color
- Build something
- Listen to relaxing music
- Take a break
- Take a shower/bath
- Use a calming jar
- Gratitude
- You can also remember these steps by using the acronym RAIN
- Recognize what you’re feeling. Let yourself be open to your emotions of sadness, anger, or fear, and name it.
- Allow it to be here. Let go of any agenda for it to change and, for a few moments, give it permission to be just as it is.
- Investigate how it feels in your body on an energetic level without getting into the story behind it or trying to get rid of it. Bring a curiosity or interest that involves simply exploring the landscape of your emotion without needing to figure it out.
- Non-identification—meaning, don’t take it personally; don’t assume the experience reflects who you are at your core. (For example, don’t say to yourself, “I’m an angry person.”) Recognize that everyone experiences emotions; they are part of the human condition. Open up to that truth and don’t let it define you.
- Make a list of what you can do to feel better.
