Military Murder

In 2016, 20-year old Rina Shimabukuro vanished after sending her boyfriend a text message that she was going for a walk. Japanese authorities scoured CCTV footage for any evidence that would lead them to Rina. And they found what they were looking for when they saw an American in a red SUV buying salt from a local convenience store and pouring some inside his car.

When they tracked down the man in the red SUV back to Kadena AB, they discovered the man was Kenneth Gadson Shinzato – a U.S. Marine veteran.

Dig in with Margot as she takes you through the 2016 murder that caused outrage in Japan. Margot also digs into the 1995 Okinawa rape that began a movement to get U.S. troops off of the island of Okinawa. The perpetrators in that case were: Marcus Gill, Kendrick Ledet, and Rodrico Harp. Margot also digs into the 2006 murder-suicide of Kendrick Ledet and college student Lauren Cooper.

Dig in with Margot as she tells you all about it – focusing on the aspects of the report that dug into Fort Hood criminal investigations – but primarily focusing on the disappearance of Vanessa Guillen and the disappearance of Elder Fernandes.

Margot highly recommends listening to Ep31 (Guillen), Ep37 (Guillen update), and Ep41 (Elder Fernandes) before listening to this episode.

FORT BENNING: Specialist Richard Davis

In 2003, Specialist Richard Davis and his unit returned from an Iraq deployment. Richard and 4 of his military buddies (Mario Navarette, Alberto Martinez, Jacob Burgoyne, and Douglas Woodcoff) decided to paint the town red while they were on their 2-day R & R (rest & relaxation). The next morning, when everyone reported to work, Richard didn’t show up. His leadership thought he’d gone on a bender, maybe he was with a girl, but after 48-hours, they contacted Richard’s father to inform him that his son was absent without leave (AWOL). Lanny Davis, Richard’s father, and a veteran himself knew something was off. And he began his search for his son. Four-months later, they’d find Richard...

Dig in with Margot as she discusses a case that caught the attention of Hollywood. In 2007, a movie titled, “In the Valley of Elah” featured the case covered in this episode. The lead actors were Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron, and Susan Sarandon. But the movie was “based on this case” and the reality of what happened is a bit different.
