Just fourteen days earlier 39 years old Irina Garcia gave birth to her daughter and Derek Rosa's half-sister. A picture posted to her Instagram on September 7th features Irina, dressed in pink maternity, and fully pregnant. Her son and the father of her child with their hands on her stomach.

She looks happy, and frankly, beautiful. She was celebrating a joyous occasion. Bringing a daughter into the world to light up her life. Give her meaning. Within a few months she would be stabbed 46 times. And allegedly by the loving son in her picture.

The fastest way up to the top of Mount Toubkal is a two day route. The two day route is a “simple up and down via the same trail from Imlil”. On the first day, you travel to Imlil). Once in Imlil, you take a four hour walk up the mountain to the refuge, and spend the night either in a tent or dorm. On the second day, you walk from the refuge to the summit. After spending time at the summit, you trek back down the mountain, all the way back to Imlil. There are many different routes you can take to get to the top of Mount Toubkal - this is just one example.
December 17, 2018
Imlil, Morocco
It’s early in the morning; two French hikers are on a “small hike” when they come “up on a plateau” about an hour into the hike. The hikers discover the bodies of Louisa and Maren on Mount Toubkal, around six miles from the center of Imlil.
That’s when they saw an open tent, and two “broken” girls outside of the tent.

The following episode has several twists and turns. I ask that you hold on tight and not look into the case. You’ll have a better time if you do so. A lot of thought is put into Obscura in terms of keeping coverage objective. With that said the opening part of this episode is sourced directly from the Innocence project of Florida as well as court records. With several sections read verbatim. Alright... let’s get on with it.

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” - Helen Keller“

Listener, in today’s episode I’m going to do my best to avoid bias. I am covering the killing of Sonya Massey by a then-Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy named Sean Grayson. I am going to distribute the facts by use of court documents, news articles, and how they appear to my naked eye.

Obscura: A True Crime Podcast - 54: Neil Entwistle: A Family Murdered, Par 01
play

05/25/22 • 50 min

We all have secrets. Internal thoughts we keep to ourselves. Actions and behaviours we carry out in private that no one else knows about. Part of those internal personal thoughts are fantasies, dreams, and desires that we don’t always share. But when those work together, when they have a dark undercurrent and come tumbling out of the mind and into real-life, the outcome is never a good one.

In January 2006, the town of Hopkinton in Massachusetts became the scene of a heart-breaking and shocking tragedy that sparked attention in both America and the UK. In a small quiet family orientated cul-de-sac just under five miles from the town center, a young family had just begun their new lives in Massachusetts with their 9-month-old baby Lily. Within weeks, two family members would be dead and the other nowhere to be found. Secrets and lies, even those kept within the depths of darkness and firmly behind the mask of normality have a way of spilling out in the end. And when they do, it changes everything.
