Managing With Dr. Meli
09/06/22 • 2 min
Recent studies have identified the various ways that the past two years have impacted our lives. We seem to be floundering to find ways to ease our existential anxiety and build more purpose and meaning. The changes are not just within us individuals, they’ve impacted families, communities, loved ones, and the systems we navigate day to day.
I’m Dr. Meli, clinical psychologist and fellow human. My story is founded by those who came before me. As the granddaughter of two Holocaust survivors, I have always been intrigued and pulled in by survival stories. How do people manage not only horrible things, but day to day existence in the world. What makes people tick? What makes us resilient?
We are ALL managing some sort of challenge. When we think about how we can manage these challenges- it’s not only helpful for US to know how, it’s imperative that family, friends, community members, systemic leadership ALSO know about how to identify and manage these things too. This is what WE ARE MISSING. This community approach, this human approach to managing difficulties. We need to build more opportunities for community and be able to find connection through our struggles and resiliencies.
Listen in and find out what we struggle with, how to identify those struggles and how to manage those struggles. We will review data and research...but we will also HUMANIZE that data and talk about what these phenomena look like IN REAL LIFE. Each week on Managing With Dr. Meli, I’m having conversations for us to prepare both ourselves and others in navigating this crazy world. I’m talking with mental health clinicians, researchers, physicians, entrepreneurs, leaders, and other humans who are passionate about and/or experienced life’s challenges.

The human experience is absolutely wild. Managing With Dr. Meli normalizes, builds empathy and shares new perspectives to help us manage human existence.
Let’s sprinkle a little bit more humanity back into this world.

Self Love with Jordan Leverette
Managing With Dr. Meli
05/18/23 • 47 min
We hear a lot about self-love and the benefits of loving yourself but what in the heck does that actually look like?
This week, I’m chatting with self-love guru and associate marriage and family therapist, Jordan Leverette. In this episode, we chat about all things self-love. Why is self-love important? What is the relationship between self-love and setting boundaries? What are the implications or risk factors for not loving ourselves? And how can we take steps toward truly loving ourselves?
Jordan is a multicultural Black-identified Orange County Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and Cal State Fullerton Adjunct Professor whose work is grounded in anti-racist, queer-affirming, culturally aware, and trauma-informed care. Her clinical specialties include supporting victims and survivors of domestic violence by separating from codependency and moving towards individualization and reclaiming their sense of self. Jordan seeks to help clients make radical self-love and compassion a little less radical.

Being A First Gen, with Carla Avalos
Managing With Dr. Meli
06/29/23 • 49 min
Being a first-generation American-born human can come with some challenges. One might feel like they are stuck or pulled both to honor the culture that their parents were raised in and make space for the possibly vastly different culture in which they currently reside.
What are some of the challenges, quirks, or resiliencies inherent in being a first-generation American? How do we unpack our parent’s cultural expectations amidst acculturation and consolidate them with our own? How do we identify what we want to hold on to and release as part of generational cycles? And how do we create our own narrative amidst it all?
This week, I’m chatting with Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional, Carla Avalos. Carla was born and raised in Los Angeles and is a daughter of a Salvadoran immigrant mother. She works full-time as a Clinical Supervisor for L.A. County Dept. Of Mental Health and also has a part-time private practice.
