Content marketing is something that can be difficult for some to understand.

It's all about getting yourself out of the 'take' mindset, and instead becoming all about 'giving'.

As in, giving information. Info that's useful to your target audience! And ultimately, if you do that, the rewards will follow.

In the most recent episode of "Making Conversations Count" Wendy Harris chatted with the guy who literally invented the term 'content marketing'.

Joe Pulizzi shared immense wisdom around what the term really means, and how you can apply it in your own offerings.

Wendy and producer Neal get together as always, and chat through what they've learned.

The man who invented content marketing talks about becoming a content entrepreneur Making Conversations about content entrepreneurs Count!

"It takes time. Of course, you're always going to have those outliers that just make it right away.

But generally, that doesn't happen...."

Joe Pulizzi, Making Conversations Count - (May 2022)

Psst! Low on data? Here's a lower bandwidth version for you.

Who is Joe Pulizzi?

Joe Pulizzi is a content 'super hero'.

As the founder of The Tilt and author of "Content Inc", Joe has been helping his followers take the step toward being a successful marketing entrepreneur for more than a decade.

Joe is also creating his own crypto currency.

In this episode of the "Making Conversations Count" podcast, Joe explains to Wendy how important it is to be clear in your goals if you want your content to work for you.

Also, why it's important to get your head around how to behave at 'the cocktail party'.

If you're involved in the marketing and content side of business in any way, you need to listen to this episode...

You'll learn....

In this episode of "Making Conversations Count", in which Joe Pulizzi shares his wealth of wisdom around how to be the best marketing entrepreneur, covers:

  • The phrase ‘content marketing’ and what this marketing entrepreneur had to do with its origins
  • The truth about ‘overnight success’
  • How will you behave at ‘the cocktail party’?
  • Joe’s conversation that counted – (and the importance of patience and listening!)

A poignant moment from the episode:

Wendy

Being a business owner is definitely not for the faint hearted, that's for sure. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors out there, isn't there? If you believe everything that you read, it's the work life balance lifestyle. You've just touched on it yourself and Pam 2007 to 2011, it's four years of you having to work together when there's two of you in the business. It's a family business. Gosh, that's a lot riding on it. You've got to have that true belief.

Joe

And you've got to be a little bit crazy. And most entrepreneurs are a little bit crazy because you're audacious enough to think that you can create something out of nothing. And actually, build a business. And knowing that the failure rate is pretty high, within three years, half of businesses shut down. That don't make it. That's just within three years. That's horrible. I think it's something like within seven to ten years, only one in ten of those businesses are still going, oh, my God, what a horror stpry. But if you stick with it, and that's the opportunity too, because so many people give up and they don't realise that this is a marathon and not a sprint. Because one day, as you said before, you're on top of the world. You think, this is the greatest day of my life. I'm so glad I started a business. And the next day you're like, what did I do? This is horrible. I'm an idiot. Why did I start a business? Why did I leave a secure job with benefits or whatever? And it just goes back and forth all the time and it's very challenging. That's why my heart goes out to any entrepreneur and business owner.

Wendy

I was talking to somebody the other day and they're saying you've got the front door and you've got the back door. If you're in business for yourself and you're thinking about the back door, which is kind of your Plan B. It isn't looking very good for you because what you're actually doing is you're already kind of heading that way because that's where your energy is going, isn't it?

Joe

Yes.

Wendy

So, if you're an entrepreneur, it's front door only. Which I thought was quite a good way of looking at it.

Joe

I guess it depends on how you define risk. When I left my pretty good job in 2007, there were a lot of people came up to me. So, I can't believe you're risking that. You're giving up benefits and whatever. And I'm like, well, today, what's riskier? Me putting all my energy into somebody else's strategy that I don't have any say over and they can fire me or lay me off at any time or actually going out and doing something and having full at least as much control as you possibly can over this entity. ...

The latest of our conversations is with a man who could have easily written a Hollywood movie starring Michael Keaton Making Conversations about discernible deeds Count!

"So I just threw it out there. Where would I find my Ray Kroc? Where would he be? Where would I meet him? ...."

EA Csolkovits, Making Conversations Count - (May 2022)

Psst! Low on data? Here's a lower bandwidth version for you.

Who is EA Csolkovits?

EA Csolkovits is a man with a fascinating story that intertwines janitorial services with the golden arches.

Yes, those golden arches.

As the founder of Givers University, EA Csolkovits is living his purpose, helping students to identify discernible deeds.

All of it comes back - as it usually does - to the conversation that he had that counted.

And that conversation was with June Martino.

Yep, bit of a break in format with this episode.

Because the whole conversation is the conversation that counted.

And in this particular story, it's not the conversation we're focusing on. It's what that conversation led to.

In this episode of the "Making Conversations Count" podcast, EA explains to Wendy exactly what it was that June Martino said to him, and where that led him in his own journey.

You'll learn....

This episode of "Making Conversations Count", in which EA Csolkovits tells his story about meeting June Martino and learning the origin story of McDonalds and Ray Kroc, covers:

  • EA’s connection to the movie “The Founder
  • What “The Founder” depicted accurately
  • The question EA asked June Martino
  • EA’s need to find his Ray Kroc
  • How EA applies his learnings from Ray Kroc to GIVERS!

A poignant moment from the episode:

There's a part in the movie where June goes to Ray and says, "Ray, we got a little problem. We don't have any money".

He can't believe it.

And he says, what do you mean? We have all these?

And that causes him to call the brothers and they have this drama scene. I want more percentage, I need more percentage, etc.

And he signs on the phone, that isn't how the event happened, but the event itself did happen.

So she told me Ray didn't have any money.

He was out of money.

There was no money in the till.

There was no money in the company.

So we made an agreement that I would keep working for him for no pay.

And he would pay me in worthless worth less than zero company stock. And he would take the bill collectors and the bill collectors were calling me personally for money.

He would take the phone calls. So I just asked her, I said, June, why did you do it? I said, I'm 16 years old and I'm a janitor. I work paycheck to paycheck. If I don't get my check on Friday, I'm not showing on Saturday. I need my check.

Why did you work for nothing? I would never do that. And right then Wendy, she stared at me with this blank look on her face, eyeball to eyeball, and I realised she just left the room even though she's staring at me.

And here I am, I'm 16 years old and I'm talking to June Martino, the icon.

Everyone knew who she was in the area when I met her. As she's staring at me, I'm going because it seemed like 30 minutes was like maybe 15 seconds.

But I realised I just asked her a question no one ever asked her before. Everyone wanted to know what happened, but no one wanted to know why. And I just asked her, why did you do it?

And when she spoke it made the hair stand up on the back of my neck, I still remember what she said, the way she said it.

And my first thought right after she made the statement...
