Let's Get Physical (Therapy)

Send us a text

Cody Meashaw tackles acute low back pain (LBP), a very common injury that our patients will experience at some point in life. Cody covers the typical treatment journey of a patient experiencing LBP, and how it can be problematic if there’s a delay in coming to PT for treatment. He talks about the clinical prediction rule for low back pain and red flags on when to refer out.

Cody discusses the findings of two articles which are listed below and shares some insight on how he works with patients with low back pain.

If you’re a clinician less familiar with treating this patient population, it’s a great conversation to learn more about LBP and how we can best treat our patients conservatively in the clinic.

Articles:

  1. Cleland JA, Fritz JM, Childs JD, Kulig K. Comparison of the effectiveness of three manual physical therapy techniques in a subgroup of patients with low back pain who satisfy a clinical prediction rule: study protocol of a randomized clinical trial [NCT00257998]. BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2006 Feb 10;7:11. doi: 10.1186/1471-2474-7-11. PMID: 16472379; PMCID: PMC1421401.
  2. Mahmoudzadeh A, Rezaeian ZS, Karimi A, Dommerholt J. The effect of dry needling on the radiating pain in subjects with discogenic low-back pain: A randomized control trial. J Res Med Sci. 2016 Oct 18;21:86. doi: 10.4103/1735-1995.192502. PMID: 28163732; PMCID: PMC5244646.
