I’ve written before about our terrible habit as learning professionals to focus on everyone’s professional development – except our own. That’s why I’m so excited to join Brianne Thomas, Founder and President of Northlake Professional Group. She’s put together an exciting two-day online conference for learning professionals. As the closing keynote, I’ll be speaking about being Intelligently Emotional – The New Science of Emotional Intelligence.

Megan Murphy, Executive Director

If you’re wondering if there is still a place for all-girls’ education today, listen to my interview with Executive Director Megan Murphy who has led the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS). One of the most compelling reasons to offer a girls-only education at the K-12 and beyond levels is to encourage girls to continue their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), which tend to drop off as girls reach their pre-teens in co-ed environments.

During Megan’s tenure, NCGS has achieved significant growth in programs, membership, and staffing. Megan’s vision to create national and global strategic alliances led to the first-ever Global Forum on Girls’ Education, resulting in nearly 1,000 educators from 23 countries coming together to exchange ideas about innovative approaches for academic excellence and the healthy development of girls.

I had several high schools growing up, including Madonna High School in Wichita, Kansas, which was all girls at the time. Megan and I talk about the case for an all-girls’ education and some tips for deciding if it is right for the girls in your life.

If you could see what your client was thinking, would it make you a more influential consultant? Thanks to the latest advances in the neurosciences, this is exactly what you can do, and the folks at Propeller asked me to teach them how in a recent private workshop. Propeller is a management consulting firm with offices in Portland and San Francisco. When I visited their office in Portland, I discovered a family of people who love the adventure of solving complex problems and are proud of being one of the best places to work. I sat down with Allison Torpey and Bobby Kosh from their leadership team to learn more about Propeller is putting brain science to work in their consulting practice.

Baba Brinkman is a rap artist, award-winning playwright, and former tree-planter who has personally planted more than one million trees. (What a legacy!) His best known for his “Rap Guide” series of plays and albums, including his latest work, The Rap Guide to Consciousness. I must admit that I don’t consider myself much of a fan of rap music, but I’m going to have to rewire my brain on that subject. I absolutely fell in love with this album and the wonderful way Baba incorporates peer-reviewed neuroscience into his compelling, sometimes haunting tunes.

In this episode, I talked with Baba about his amazing work, his fascination with the brain and his life married to an actual neuroscientist. You can purchase his music on Bandcamp, iTunes, and Amazon. Follow him on Twitter and see all his work at www.bababrinkman.com.
