185: Alejandra Castellanos Bar Av: Israel – A Hub For Emerging Technology and Entrepreneurship
05/28/18 • 40 min
A native of Mexico, Alejandra Castellanos Bar Av has lived in different parts of the world, most recently settling in Israel with her husband and children. While friends back home questioned how she could live where there was war, she fell in love with the richness of people, technology, and collaboration that was present in Israel. In fact, it was this discrepancy between how people saw the region and her real life experience that lead her to spread the amazing stories she discovered in Israel.
Applying her background in engineering and television, Ale became the founder and CEO of HOLALAND, a holistic platform that helps bridge the gap between Latin American emerging markets and the growing wave of technological solutions from Israel. She also co-founded Cantera Capital with partners from Mexico, in order to cross-fertilize both ecosystems. Cantera Capital is a venture capital fund specializing in startups that focus on innovation in agriculture, health and education.
In her conversation with us today, Ale describes the explosive growth that is happening in Israel, in terms of technology, women-led businesses, and what the rest of the world can learn from their commitment to innovation, globalization, and collaboration. We explore technological advances that will be transforming the market over the next 20+ years, the opportunity of AI, and why we need to know our history in order to build a brighter future for the next generation.
Key Takeaways
- Israeli companies are born to be global companies from day one. Out of necessity, they focus on addressing global problems, including agriculture, mobility, and digital health.
- Israel is one of the few countries in the world that has a 100% digital health system.
- Over 400 multinational companies have their research and development centers in Israel.
- There is a strong spirit of collaboration among Israelis and for the rest of the world. Israelis are very open to sharing what they did, what worked, what didn’t work, and how they can help.
- AI will take over many functions however there is still the desire for human connection that comes with soul to soul relationships.
- The thinkers around the world need to get together and think through what we have developed so far and the kind of world that we really want to build.
- A people that doesn’t know their history cannot look forward to a bright future. Our history is what we build on and leave to the next generation.

Key Takeaways
- Money anxiety is actually more prevalent with people who make a lot of money. It is so insidious we often don’t recognize it.
- Money magnifies more of who you are and what you have. You have money anxiety when you believe that money is the cure-all.
- Think of money as a person. If you’re anxious about it, does that person even want to be around you?
- Identify how you uniquely make money in this world. Then identify the bad money story that is running underneath the surface. It shows up in your language, physicality, energy, and behaviors.
- A bad money story will drive every sales conversation and create an undesirable end result almost every time.
- Start forgiving yourself and your teachers of money.
- Don’t avoid or devalue money. Learn the game, get good at the game, and use it to make a greater impact.

186: Heather Thorkelson: Create A Life Where You Can Thrive!
Have you ever dreamed of traveling the world as a location-independent entrepreneur?
Heather Thorkelson is a successful serial entrepreneur, lifestyle business coach and consultant, founder of the Republic Of Freedom, and co-founder of Twin Tracks Expedition, a polar expedition company. She specializes in creating standout experiences where her clients embrace new adventures and become a better human being.
Prior to starting her first company in 2011, Heather worked all over the world in various capacities. Canadian born and without a Plan B, she left for Mexico at 23 to manage 15 staff as the English Director in a private school in the Mexican desert. Later she ventured to South Africa to build a complete social media platform for a HIV non-profit, and then went on to Vancouver where she ‘guided old rich cowboys’ through an online auctioning process where they could buy a $3 million dollar crane in Dubai for their business. She was also a sales rep for a drug company for 7 long years, and points out that, thankfully, she could work from a home office.
After meeting her Swedish husband in Antarctica while on another project, they established a home base in Sweden and run their companies from wherever they choose to be.
Suffice to say that Heather has had the opportunity to see the world through a different lens. In our conversation today, Heather shares with us a few of her entrepreneurial adventures, what she has learned along the way, and how she is changing the way people think about their lives and their role in leadership and business. We explore the biggest barriers to living a life you love, the power of leading from the periphery, and the use of storytelling and mythology in capturing the attention of your intended audience.
Discover the freedom of building your business outside the Matrix! Tune in to hear Heather’s first-hand experience and learn how you can live a life you love.
Key Takeaways
- The biggest things that hold people back are fear of change, fear of the unknown, and lack of confidence. Don’t be afraid of not knowing. Just decide ‘I’m going to figure it out’.
- It’s best to lead from the periphery. That way you’re not expected to be perfect and people can relate to you on a peer to peer level.
- In order to be a good leader, you have to be a good follower. You have to be able to take direction and feedback. Check in every 3-4 months, to re-assess your role and position as a leader.
- The use of story and mythology is what creates resonance and people wanting to follow you.
- Storytelling about your life isn’t about bragging, it’s about bringing people along on your journey.
- One of the most important things you can do is take a stand for something. ‘I believe’ statements are a great way of sharing who you are.
- Feel the fear and do it anyway. Find a relationship with your fear that works for YOU, not your fear.
