Lead and Lift

About Kurt Porter: He is a subject matter expert in the Continuous Improvement Process and Team Resource Management Principles. He gained this knowledge and experience in the private sector, federal service, and the United States Navy. He is an outstanding communicator whose communication skills were honed by years of public speaking. This includes the delivery of keynote speeches on a wide variety of topics before both small groups and large audiences.

Kurt has facilitated hundreds of workshops on Leadership, Communication, and Teamwork. He is a former diplomatic interpreter and a Defense Language Institute Instructor of the Year. He has visited over 80 countries and lived 30 years overseas (Japan, Germany, the Philippines, and Russia). He speaks Vietnamese and Russian. Kurt is the Founder and Executive Director of PLC (Performance and Leadership Coaching).

In this episode, Chabidaye and Kurt discuss:

  • What is effective communication
  • Communication barriers due to culture
  • Minimizing distractions, emotions and biases
  • How to be a good communicator using VEGA

Key Takeaways:

  • Communication is the transmittal of a message and the receipt of that message. We have to avoid communication failure as best as we can, especially when a lot relies on its success.
  • A difference in culture can create communication barriers. One English word, for example, could have a vast difference depending on whether you’re in the US or the UK even though they’re basically the same language. It’s important to recognize this and understand that neither are wrong, just different.
  • Minimize distractions or completely eliminate them since they are a huge hindrance to effective communication. Put your phone on silent mode when in a meeting. Also, don’t let your emotions and biases change your message.
  • Remember the acronym VEGA if you want to be an effective communicator. First is voice, you have to project, be audible and speak with an appropriate tone. Maintain good eye contact, if there are multiple people - do a general sweep of the room, don’t focus on just one person. Use gestures for emphasis but only minimally, don’t overdo it. Lastly, you need to have a good attitude.

"There’s three things we have to do, the three C’s: be Clear, be Concise, and we have to Confirm understanding." — Kurt Porter

Toni Belin Ingram: Family Unity

About Toni Belin Ingram: "I can help you if you let me" has been her mantra for years. She has since a young girl always helped friends and family problem solve, think through solutions, and mediate conflict. She is an ordained itinerant elder in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Her vision is to ensure that more people reach their full potential and fulfill their divine purposes. Being a Maxwell Leadership Certified Team Member has equipped her with the tools, strategies, and resources necessary to help people at a more profound level. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, and a Master of Divinity Degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. She has also completed her Doctor of Ministry at Payne Theological Seminary in Adaptive Leadership. She, along with her husband Raymond, reside in Atlanta, Georgia. Together, they are the proud parents of three adult children, Omar, Iman and Asha and excited grandparents of Zion. She leads a 6:45am EST #DailyPrayer call. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Toni is member of the 2014 class of Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Board of Preachers.

In this episode, Chabidaye and Toni discuss:

  • A gift and an opportunity
  • Children are all unique
  • Creating an open dialogue
  • Allowing your children to flourish

Key Takeaways:

  • Each child is both a gift and an opportunity. They are a gift from God and they are an opportunity for us to be our very best selves.
  • A child is a person and like any person, they are utterly unique. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all kind of solution or method to parenting. It’s important to take time to understand your kid, to be present in their lives, practice unconditional love and forgiveness.
  • One of the best things you can do for your family is to ensure that each member in your family has the ability to talk out what they think and how they feel or how someone has hurt them. This will allow each one to forgive, love, and move on.
  • How we treat our children either add to their ability to thrive or flourish or they add to their inability to see themselves better. How do you wake them up? What do you say to them? What do you allow them to say to themselves? Be your children’s first encourager.

"The important thing for family is to recognize that there is no perfect model about who family is or what family looks like but the best thing that we can do is to love them, encourage them, be fully present with them. ." — Toni Belin Ingram

Bill Goodwin - Growth vs Goal Mindset

About Bill Goodwin: He lives in Apple Valley, MN. He has 30 years of leadership experience in growing and building individuals and teams. Bill is a Maxwell Leadership Certified Team Member. He is the owner of Priority Living of MN where he provides speaking, training, and coaching. He is a Rotarian and member of two local Chambers. Since 2006, Bill has served as Lead Pastor at Lighthouse Church in Rosemount, MN. Bill is married to Karla, has two adult children and two grandsons.
In this episode, Chabidaye and Bill discuss:

  • Defining your goal and gathering tools
  • Action with focus and consistency
  • Walking towards your growth
  • Downhill habits in an uphill journey

Key Takeaways:

  • You have to know what you want to accomplish. Have a clearly defined goal. Then, make sure that you have the right tools to accomplish that goal.
  • Once you’ve got a goal and you’ve got your tools, consistently take action. Swing that ax - but swing it at one tree only. Focus on accomplishing your goal, don’t get distracted.
  • If you want to grow, then keep walking in the journey towards your growth. Focus daily on what you want to learn, invest time and effort into learning new things and new skills.
  • We have to be intentional about growth. Everything worthwhile in life is uphill, so if you feel difficulty in the pursuit of growth then you know that you are on the right path. We have to let go of downhill daily habits in order for us to find progress in growth.

"Everything worthwhile in life is uphill." — Bill Goodwin
