Paulette Erato hosts La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latina, the only biweekly Spanglish podcast about creating and living your best life, from the childfree Latina perspective. That life starts with liberating ourselves from the toxic cultural brainwashing we've all grown up with in Latinidad. Like assuming everyone wants kids...or the woman should fix her partner a plate at dinner.
F that! End the generational trauma and design best life for YOU instead. Let's get rid of the toxic BS and make decisions and life choices that make us happy instead of merely another victim of The Patriarchy.

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams" is the mantra that this week's guest, Julie DeLucca-Collins, used to finish El Camino de Santiago in 2016. And when she lost her job during the pandemic, she knew helping women develop their own belief system—their confidence—was her true calling. And so her agency Go Confidently Services was born.

But Julie is more than merely a badass CEO and podcaster. She is also a childfree woman of Puerto Rican and Salvadorean descent. But Julie's childfree story isn't quite what you would expect. In a unique twist, Julie's journey took a little detour that kind of led to an existential struggle. Here's how a business and life strategist coach deals with imposter syndrome, rejection, and the road to childfree-dom.

More about Julie:

Julie DeLucca-Collins is the Founder and CEO of Go Confidently Services and the host of the popular Casa DeConfidence Podcast®. As a Business and Life Strategist Coach, Julie helps women business owners launch or grow their businesses, get clients, be productive, and achieve their dreams. Julie helps her clients create simple habits to achieve goals and change lives. Julie is also the best-selling author of the newly released book Confident You (simple habits to live the life you've imagined).

Julie is a sought-after public speaker trainer and course creator. She is certified as a CBT Holistic Coach and Tiny Habits Certified. She is also certified as a Social Emotional Learning Facilitator and has completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification.

La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latinas - #41 - Dismantling the Toxic Latine Money Mentality with Wealth Warrior Linda Garcia
play

Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text!

Just because the stereotype that childfree people have more disposable income exists, doesn't make it true. And even if it is, childfree Latinas y Latines might have the added burden of a scarcity mindset instilled upon us by our culture. Instead of generational wealth, we inherit generational trauma.
Did you know that less than 0.5% of Latines in the US have money in the stock market? That's not even a full percentage point, it's half of one. And that's by design.
Financial educator, Linda Garcia is on a mission to change that. She's convinced we can all be well on our way to becoming millionaires in the next 10 years if we start now. So what's her secret?
In her book Wealth Warrior: Eight Steps for Communities of Color to Conquer the Stock Market, Linda breaks down the barriers communities of colors routinely face and provides readers with the tools to get to the root of our money wounds so that brown people can bridge the wealth gap.
The book is a must-read if you've ever felt intimidated in white spaces. While yes, you will learn about buying stocks and how to build a portfolio, what's really at the heart of it is dismantling the idea that being rich, having money, and living without financial stress is not something you're allowed to have. Let's unlearn that toxic BS, mi gente!
Key takeaways from this episode:

  • Learn what money wounds might be keeping you from seeing yourself as an investor
  • What you need, in addition to financial literacy, in order to become wealthy
  • Why YOU have a responsibility to acquire and grow wealth

Let's all become millionaires!

La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latinas - #19 - Don't Let Your Privilege Cloud Your Empathy with Isabel Firecracker
play

08/30/22 • 50 min

Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text!

Meet Isabel, a firebrand and bold Latina voice promoting the modern childfree lifestyle. This episode was recorded on the day that Roe v. Wade was overturned, and though Isabel is from Colombia, she explains how the reverberations of this landmark decision affect childfree people around the world, and especially in Latin America.
We didn't hide our frustrations during this conversation, and we also didn't shy away from delving into heavy topics like white supremacy, forced sterilization, and the dangers of pronatalism. But we also have hope for the impact that our own voices can have for other Latinas, and invite you to join this fight with us.
More about Isabel:
Isabel loves to create virtual and IRL activities that connect more childfree women from around the World. Whether co-hosting the Childfree Girls podcast or organizing trips with The Uprising Spark, Isabel is the childfree friend you always wanted but never knew you needed.

Isabel is a co-founder of Nunca Madre: a Spanish-speaking community for childfree people in Latin America and Spain focused on raising awareness about choice and helping those undecided about having kids.

A world traveler, avid kite surfer, and childfree intersectional feminist, Isabel offers safe spaces where other childfree women evolve and grow into the best versions of themselves.

La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latinas - #36 - The Dangers of Calladita Se Ve Más Bonita with Pam Covarrubias
play

04/04/23 • 43 min

Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text!

Pam Covarrubias has bounced between the US and Mexico her entire life. As a business coach and host of the Cafe Con Pam podcast, she has learned to stand in her power and will explain on this episode exactly what that means and what it took to get there. She also explains how embodying 2 separate countries and cultures gives her the necessary experience to help her clients build successful and sustainable businesses.
In this episode, we deconstruct the common Spanish phrase "calladita se ve mas bonita," which translates into the idea that quiet little girls are more beautiful. That one little phrase has managed to pack in a heavy dose of misogyny and stripped people of their own voices. Because when people feel like their voices bear no weight and they lack confidence in themselves, they're so easy to control.
Controlling people, especially women, is what the patriarchy thrives on. And women like Pam and I are here to call bullshit on that belief and behavior and minimize its impact. As a childfree Latina, Pam points to how gender and societal norms (in both the US and Mexico) affect how she is perceived and how the bingos she hears give her real insight on to people's own projections of themselves.

We also chat about coffee, dogs, and discuss whether or not moms are more productive than non-moms. Let me know if you agree or disagree with her assessment!

La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latinas - #25 - Nobody's Entitled to Become a Grandparent with Rosalba Fontanez
play

10/11/22 • 30 min

Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text!

Rosalba Fontanez has something she wants all parents of childfree people to hear: this is NOT about you, so stop putting a burden on your children to bear babies!

Let's back up because Rosalba herself is a mother. She's my mother, the maker of The Maker Muse herself. And she's just as tired as all us childfree folk are of having to defend the choice (or natural progression) to being childfree. So she has a lot to say on the subject, especially for people who expected their children to make them grandparents.

More about Rosalba:

As a hypnotherapist and shamanic healer for over 20 years, Rosalba helps people heal their own trauma (both new and generational) to lead healthier lives.

La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latinas - #42 - Debunking the Patriarchal Myth that Childfree People Hate Kids
play

06/27/23 • 22 min

Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text!

We've been socialized to believe that the traditional "life script" is the ultimate path to happiness. And anyone who doesn't follow it is doomed. Which puts childfree people, especially childfree Latinas y Latinas, at total odds with societal norms.
But who made up those rules? What is behind these supposed ideals? The patriarchy! It dictates our sometimes ridiculous and suffocating social and cultural norms, such as:

  1. Centering and prioritizing only nuclear families with 2 parents and children
  2. The dreaded R-word: REGRET, and if parents express any then they're automatically labeled "bad parents"
  3. The way the media portrays childfree people

How do we fight back? The first step is recognizing we're all on the same team. Childfree people AND parents are all subjects of the patriarchy. Let's stop dividing ourselves into us-vs-them factions, and fight the actual enemy—not each other.

Here’s a scary stat: less than 2% of the technology sector workforce is made up of Latinas. And yet tech is all across our lives. What are you reading these show notes on right now? How are you listening to this podcast?
It’s all tech!
Theresa Gonzales is a childfree, third-generation Mexican-American, and the CEO and producer of the podcast Latinas from the Block to the Boardroom. Her podcast is a social justice platform that focuses on women of color, especially Latina voices. And one of Theresa’s primary concerns is how tech, especially artificial intelligence, represents Latinas.
Having worked for several major tech companies, Theresa is able to leverage her unique experience to expose the potential downsides of AI. And not to spoil the episode, but it’s not great. Since few Latinas have access to write the code, we can’t be accurately represented by the code. Instead we’re mired in culturally demeaning stereotypes.

But we feel strongly that Gen Z will turn that around by dismantling the double standards in the industry, and use their bold sense of self to create healthy boundaries in these corporate and creative spaces.
This episode is an illustration of the heartbreaks of assimilation, the quiet blessing of infertility, and the lessons learned from nearly 2 decades in the tech space.

La Vida Más Chévere de Childfree Latinas - #34 - You've Got Fans: Building Confidence from Your Support System (bonus mini episode)
play

02/21/23 • 9 min

Wanna share your thoughts? Send a text!

If someone asked you who your biggest fan is, what would you say? Do you even know that you've got fans? Your inner critic is probably screaming no at those questions, and that's great for fueling your imposter syndrome. Not so great for building confidence. But recognizing this support system is a first step towards conquering that negative voice and growing your confidence.
In this episode, you'll learn where to start in creating a support system of fans, and that they might be lurking in some unexpected places. And how choosing to see people who are better at things than you are as your inspiration instead of your competition can also boost your confidence.
Key takeaways from this episode:

  • Recognizing your support system is a great step towards building your confidence, tu confianza
  • You only grow up to the limits of your comfort zone before you need to increase that into a new comfort zone
  • You have fans who appreciate your work, but your inner critic might be drowning them out
  • Instead of comparing yourself to other people and how far they've gotten, you can use them as inspiration to test your own limits and create new goals

Another childfree wedding success story —this time, it's a childfree destination wedding!
Bride Andrea Watt shares her experience in throwing the childfree wedding she always wanted: at sunset on the beach with only a small group of adults as guests. It doesn't sound very demanding for a bride.

Listen in to find out how this childfree destination wedding came together, the compromises that led to it being celebrated in 3 separate settings, what really caused the drama, and the fun tidbit about Andrea's wedding dress arriving in Mexico days AFTER she did.
For additional fun, check out the YouTube video for a glimpse of Andrea's gorgeous and unconventional wedding dress.
Your takeaway from this episode: a childfree wedding is absolutely worth it.
