Ep95: Emily, Harry & Oliver - Trigger Warning - 36w Drug Free Delivery, 12 Week Scan Abnormality, Medical Termination, Trisomy 18
Kiwi Birth Tales
09/16/20 • 66 min
In episode 95 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Emily about her two pregnancy and birth stories. Emily first talks us through her unexplained infertility journey, falling pregnant spontaneously after 1.5 years, Emily is also a Midwife so it is interesting hearing about this from her perspective. Emily gave birth at 36 weeks to Harry, she had planned a homebirth but as she went into labour early she delivered in the hospital and had a drug free birth in the bathroom.
Emily goes on to explain her breastfeeding struggles and adjusting to life as a Mum.
Emily then talks us through her second pregnancy, at the 12 week scan there were clear abnormalities and eventually determined that Trisomy 18 was the cause. Emily and her family made the decision to have a medical termination and she talks us through this experience, including giving birth to Oliver and how they celebrated his life.
Emily is honest and open sharing her experiences with us all and I am so grateful she did - the stigma that exists around her choice was another reason why she wanted to share as she knows she may be able to help someone in a similar situation.
Thanks again for joining me on the podcast Emily.

Ep90: Carmen, Rosie, Asher, Jude & Taj - Fertility Journey, PCOS, Breech C-Section, Twin VBAC, Singleton VBAC
Kiwi Birth Tales
08/11/20 • 62 min
As you can see from the title of this episode, number 90 is a packed one! Carmen talks us through her 3 pregnancy and birth stories with her 4 babies! Carmen and her Husband worked through a fertility struggle with PCOS, eventually using Clomophine and falling pregnant after 3 rounds - Rosie was Breech right up to her birth and ended up being a C-Section birth so Carmen talks us through that along with everything else involved in becoming a Mum.
Carmen then talks through falling pregnancy with Twins, her decision to try for a VBAC and her successful VBAC birth, learning life with twins and much more.
Carmen then talks through falling pregnant with Taj, her experience juggling family, work and pregnancy and then her vaginal birth.
This is a lovely episode and Carmen is such a gem, I know you're going to enjoy listening to her. She is also a Midwife and it's awesome hearing things from her professional perspective at times too.

Ep56 - Nina, Niamh & Elspeth - Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (Menopause), IUGR, Induction, Fast 2nd Labour & Birth, Milk Donation
Kiwi Birth Tales
11/03/19 • 57 min
In Episode 56 of Kiwi Birth Tales I speak with Nina about her 2 birth stories. Nina takes us through coming off the pill and being diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (Menopause), her symptoms and what this meant for her trying to fall pregnant. When Nina did fall pregnant she was diagnosed with Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and was monitored regularly through out her pregnancy, ending up being induced at 38 weeks.
Nina takes us through her induction and birth, including an episiotomy to help Niamh make her way into the world, her recovery from birth and also her breastfeeding journey where she received donor milk from her sisters in the early days until her milk supply regulated.
Nina then takes us through falling pregnant again reasonably quickly, no concern for growth restriction but still monitored more regularly due to being at risk for this, and through to her fast vaginal birth. Nina describes the differences between her birth experiences, her quick physical recovering and life as a Mum of two under 2.
Nina also discusses her support of the NZ Charity Mothers Milk, a breastmilk donation charity http://www.mothersmilknz.org.nz/ and how she got involved.
Thanks again for joining me on the podcast Nina!

In Episode 27 I talk to Emma Tevita about the birth of her daughter Amèlie. Emma had an ectopic pregnancy in 2016 with one of her fallopian tubes rupturing, meaning she wouldn't be able to conceive without IVF. Emma takes us through her IVF experience and falling pregnant, along with the highs and lows with having complications that caused anxiety around being pregnant.
Emma then takes us through her induction, epidural and long pushing experience which resulted in an episiotomy - Amèlie was stuck behind Emmas pelvic bone and her midwife needed to intervene to help get Amèlie out, which ended up meaning Amèlies clavicle was broken in the process of getting her free, she was then out within a matter of minutes.
Emma takes us through processing her birth experience, being a Mum to a newborn and dealing with lack of milk supply for the first 10 days due to retained placenta and the amount of blood she lost when the doctors and midwives were trying to ensure it was all removed.
Emma takes me through dealing with guilt around formula feeding, but quickly realising how much of a change it made in their stress levels and Amèlie was like a new baby afterwards.
Emma has a very interesting story she has shared with us all and I am so grateful she gave me her time, thanks Emma.
