Journey with Akia

Journey with Akia

Akia Merritt

Journeying through life unapologetically and enjoying the pathless path! Freeing myself of conditioning, impositions, and confinements, one breath at a time!
Hiii friends! My name is Akia, born in Alabama, raised in Miami, Florida, currently traveling the world for the last 4 years! After packing my bags with a one way ticket out of America I continued to look for a sense of happiness and freedom. I found myself constantly questioning life and all of its complexities and simplicities.
So I became a student — formally and informally. Informally, traveling over 30 countries and being immersed in cultures and experiences that have deeply changed my life and formally along the journey discovering paths that lead me to hundreds of hours of study around the world rooted in healing and transformation.
Get in! We’re going on a journey called Life! Here is to failure, transformation, travel, love, healing, peace, and growth!

Journey with Akia - Stop Waiting 4 Friday - Podcast Introduction
play

04/21/21 • 1 min

I like to believe that we are all unique and possess some kind of super power. My super power is doing whatever the hell I want because I understand that time is all we have. I walk through jungles barefoot, hug people that I've only just met, visit strange places, dance like no one is watching, dive into the deepest ends of the ocean, and I keep climbing after I've slipped and fallen! I quit and start again. I fail and win. And most importantly, I stopped waiting for Friday!

Hey my loves! Okay, so imagine being in an absolute paradise and still experiencing deep sadness and anger and being so confused because you believed that being on vacation, having more money, finding love, etc was the answer to happiness!
Let’s chit chat about my experience on dealing with tough emotions and how I find peace within no matter where I am or what I have. It’s still a journey for me, but I feel content enough to share my story and the tools I use that help me!

Journey with Akia - I tried following the morning routine of Buddhist monks
play

03/17/23 • 58 min

For thousands of years monks have followed the same daily routine. Why? Why do they wake up at 4am? Honestly, why does anyone even wake up earlier than 9am? How important is a daily routine and do we actually even need one to begin with? I followed some advice from the morning routine of Buddhist monks and here is what happened!

Most of us were warned about drugs in elementary school through the D.A.R.E program (Drug Abuse Resistance Programs), which in a nustshell told us don’t take drugs or you’ll die. But somehow we were still curious and it’s estimated that 47% of young people use an illegal drug by the time they graduate high school and among Americans 31.9 million are current illegal drug users. So why do we do drugs when we know about the harmful effects they have — addiction, criminal offenses, diseases, and even death? What is wrong with us?
On this episode I am joined by Blunt Talk Girls who are outspoken, blunt, have no filter, and have something to say about all of the things that society tells us to be quiet about. They are bridging the gap between cool and important. Let’s talk drugs!
Disclaimer: This episode has no intention to promote drug use and is merely recounts of personal experiences with drugs that are not encouraged. Please avoid all drug use if you can and if you are struggling with drugs here is a resource that can possibly help you.

I’ve been very open about my therapy journey because I grew up in an environment where therapy was for "pussies" or crazy people.
Well call me crazy as hell because therapy definitely opened up so much space for healing in me and I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again ... okay let me stop lying, I’ve said it HELLA TIMES and I’ll say it again ...
GO DEAL WITH YOUR SHIT!
But first, how do you know if you even really need therapy?
On this week's episode we're talking therapy .. AGAIN. But hear me out! This time I brought my good sis, Chyna Teaira, a certified therapist with years of experience in not only therapy, but spiritual healing, poetry, music, spiritual coaching, acting, sound healing, and yoga, to read us about our lack of knowledge about therapy, therapist, and healing. And also how addressing our own shit can help us flourish and live out our dreams! She is the owner of Preserving Peace a holistic wellness service centered around cultivating safe and loving spaces for Kem-Unity, basically a force to be reckoned with and I had to get her on the podcast to walk us through the mind of a therapist!

I am so excited for this new season of @sw4friday podcast! So many guests from all around the world sharing and dropping so many gems 💎

In the process of preparing for this yoga retreat I asked myself what is most message is most important? What is it that I am really here to do? What things are non-negotiable? What is the content and structure that I am sharing?
It sounds like a lot to figure out, but actually it was clear, simple, and easy. No confusion. No hard brain work required.
The most important part of teaching or sharing ... YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN PRACTICE! You should be an embodiment of what you are sharing. This way, there is no conflict with what you are offering. No confusion because you are sharing a part of your own Life.
I start off with a disclaimer at the beginning of the retreat. A set of clear intentions and values. It’s a bit bold. It’s straightforward, but it honest. We don’t have much time here on this planet. Life goes by quickly. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time!
Journey with me on this 4 part series of hosting my first yoga retreat in Bali!

Let’s be real, most of us have spent a lot of our time gossiping or discussing our likes and dislikes of others. But why? What makes us judge others and how do we stop it?
During my time in Tanzania, in a little village called Makunduchi I remembered the knowingness of non-judgement and perspective.
May we grant others the compassion to express their perspectives with non-judgement. May we be able to accept each other. May we be able to see from each others perspectives. May we be able to acknowledge that our own perspectives are only ours.
