Episode 14: Burnout featuring Anne Genduso

Since the pandemic last year, employers have been focused on employee health and well-being. Millions of people were laid off, leaving them with financial and professional insecurity. Working from home has added to challenges, as parents have had to learn how to work and teach their kids at the same time. Several people are finding it hard to separate work and personal life, which is creating tension and, ultimately, workplace burnout.

Anne Genduso, a certified executive career coach, discusses her burnout story, how she overcame it, the signs to look for, and how to manage through the slump.

Job Burnout Symptoms can include:

  • A change in lifestyle
  • Lack of energy to be productive on a consistent basis
  • The feeling of disappointment with your accomplishments
  • Unhappiness with job and life
  • Substituting healthy habits and replacing them with alcohol, drugs, or eating more
  • Change in sleep habits

Causes for burnout:

  • Unclear job expectations
  • Lack of control
  • Culture of dysfunctional workplace dynamics
  • Highs and lows of activity - inconsistency
  • Lack of work/life balance

Risk Factors:

  • Workloads and working long hours
  • Profession of serving others - thinking of others before thinking of yourself
  • Little to no control over the work you do

Job burnout is not a mental illness, it is a mental health issue. Since COVID, this has become a bigger issue. There is a lack of employees to help with the workload, and many increasing their duties to cover for the gap is taking its toll.
Some ways to cope can include: spending time with people you care about, taking your PTO/Vacation, adding something new to your daily routine, blocking off time on your calendar and doing something for yourself, asking for help, and more.

Anne and I will discuss several ways to keep your mind open and consider options. Burnout has physical and mental implications. Time to recognize the signs.
