Jess Get Hired - Episode 25: Eggrolls and Eyerolls - My AAPI life
play

05/31/22 • 28 min

Episode 25 of the Jess Get Hired Podcast is entitled, Eggrolls and Eyerolls. In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month #AAPI, I made it in time to share my lighthearted take on what it's like to be an Asian in Corporate America. To be more specific, Filipino. I briefly discuss why Asian women are precluded from leadership positions at America's Top Companies, as well as the boardroom's lack of diversity. I'll also share a few of my "eye-roll" moments. I share my stories and experiences, as well as address the most common misconceptions that most people have: "Where are you from?" "You aren't Asian enough...." "Asians never seem to age,......you look like you're 12." "Asians become doctors or nurses..." "You know Karate, right?" ...and more.... This is a good-natured conversation that I hope entertains you while also shedding light on our differences and allowing us to laugh about it.. Jess Get Hired Podcast - Episode 24 - Opportunity Overhaul with Career Coach, Matthew Warzel Opportunity is out there. What are you doing to go after it? Join me in a conversation with Matt Warzel, a certified resume writing expert and career coach. We talk about bouncing back after being laid off and the different struggles many job seekers are facing today. He shares a few tips to stand out from the crowd so you can take advantage of the different opportunities ahead of you. Finding opportunities isn’t about submitting resumes you find on a job board and waiting for recruiters or companies to contact you. A part of finding your next opportunity is about putting in some work. That includes: Networking with a purpose – start with the people you already know and then get out of your comfort zone and find people in the industry or occupation you are looking to get into. Join professional organizations. These are groups that can give you the inside track. Job Boards are not the end-all and be-all solution, but use it as a starting point. Find recruiters to partner with who can help you. Get a career coach to help you take a strategic approach and keep you motivated for your next career opportunity! Find a Recruiter that will be your new bestie - They will advocate for you if they know who you are and your capabilities! It takes a lot of time and patience and depending on the position you’re chasing, the experience you bring to the table, finding the right opportunity will take time, so you will need patience and resilience. About Matt: Matthew Warzel, CPRW is a certified resume writing expert with over 15 years in Human Resources and career advancement techniques. He manages MJW Careers and provides assistance to companies in transition from downsizes to buyouts as well as individual job seekers needing to advance their careers. Matt has a long history of working in Human Resources and recruitment/staffing teams across a variety of industries. He fashions a resume that allows employers to review the applicant's assets while highlighting his or her accomplishments, showcasing impacts on the employer's bottom lines using quantitative verbiage, and maintaining brevity. www.jobstickers.com About Jessica: Jessica Fiesta George is the Host of the podcast, "Jess Get Hired." Jess Get Hired - Episode 26: Evolution of Hiring
play

06/14/22 • 27 min

I'm celebrating my birthday this month, and I'd love for you to join me as I reflect on how much the hiring world has changed. Throughout my career, I've witnessed how human resources has changed, evolved, and created new opportunities to focus on various aspects of the employee and candidate experience.

In this episode, I explore how much has changed in my career from the "personnel department," "staffing department," "recruitment department," and "talent acquisition department." All of these terms have one thing in common: they all aim to hire and fill a position. Otherwise, each role has some additional complexities, and I'll only scratch the surface of each of these roles in this episode.

Recruiting vs. Talent Acquisition. How different are they? I will talk about the shift from recruiting to talent acquisition and how to understand what makes each role unique.

Jess Get Hired - Episode 53: Take Your D*mn PTO!
play

06/27/23 • 20 min

Episode 53: Take your damn PTO already! I just spent 10 straight days unplugged to be out of the office and celebrating my birthday! This episode will give you tips on how to enjoy your time away from the office and not feel guilty about it.

In a world that glorifies constant connection and communication, I've always been known as someone who can't sit still. My work consumes me, and even when I'm not officially working, I find myself creating more tasks to fill my time. So when I mention taking a vacation, it's met with a great deal of skepticism, especially from those who know me well. Not many believe that I know how to truly detach myself from work. I've always strived to strike a delicate balance between "working a little bit" and "being on PTO." But this time, I made a conscious decision to unplug completely, without allowing guilt to seep in for not immediately answering emails, returning phone calls, or responding to messages.

In today's fast-paced world, taking time off from work has become essential for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. But, many professionals struggle with guilt and anxiety when it comes to being out of the office. So here are some tips you will hear in this episode:

  • Just Unplug!

PTO doesn't just stand for Paid time off - it also stands for "prepare the others." I will share some tips to ensure a smooth transition during your absence.

  • Remember, You Earned it!

Make the most of your vacation and learn to disconnect. Engage in self-care, and explore the world around you!

  • Coming back to work doesn't have to suck!

Organize your inbox and avoid the "first day back blues." Think about what you learned or how you felt while you were away from the office and use that as your motivation to infuse new ideas into the work that you do!

Taking care of yourself isn't saying "me first," it also means saying it's about "me...too."

Being out of the office is not just a luxury. It's a necessity. If you want to maintain a sense of sanity and healthy work-life balance, just take your d*mn PTO already and enjoy the hell out of it!

Recruiters, what if technology could cut down your candidate screening time? Jobseekers, what if you could do an interview when it was convenient for you? This episode will focus on leveling up your recruiting game so you can hire great candidates faster than ever before, and give job seekers a glimpse into the screening process and how to be better prepared. Meet Darrian Mikell, Co-Founder, and CEO of Qualifi.hr, a SaaS platform that powers the fastest phone interview experience in the world! Many organizations are feeling the effect of a lack of resources to screen candidate resumes and job applications in order to fill open positions. Qualifi is assisting in resolving the time-consuming task of conducting phone interviews. Since the pandemic, job seekers have felt increased pressure to conduct more video interviews and video conferencing, which is not always convenient when they are on the go. By using a phone-only interview platform, it removes bias, increases productivity, and helps the overall candidate experience. Darrian shares his story about why he created this platform and we discuss how jobseekers can prepare for interviews.
