Welcome back to Intellicast! In today's episode, Brian and Matthew are joined by two special guests to get all the details around a news story that was talked about several weeks back – the new strategic partnership between Brandtrust and Protobrand.

Joining Brian and Matthew to discuss how this partnership came about are Alex Millet, the new CEO of Brandtrust, and Pal Afzelius, the CEO of Protobrand.

Since this was Pal's first appearance on the podcast, Brian asked him how he ended up in the market research industry. Pal tells us how he attended the Swedish School, met the co-founder of Protobrand, and hit it off; the rest is history. (You can hear Alex's origin story here: https://playlist.megaphone.fm?e=CSN6936360131)

After learning about Pal, the guys turned to the strategic partnership between Brandtrust and Protobrand. Alex starts it by discussing the background of the relationship between the two companies and what led to their discussions and, ultimately, partnering. He and Pal then talk about how the partnership works for each organization, including how they play to each other's

strengths. Alex and Pal even get into how the two organizations have become much more client-centric in their approach since the partnership announcement.

Alex and Pal then talk about what comes next for the partnership, including better integrating their delivery to clients and improving their combined solutions.

We switch gears for the interview's second half and discuss TMRE, where Pal and Alex were the week after Thanksgiving. Alex gives a recap of the presentation he and Brandturst's director of research, Chris Hole, gave called How Human Truth Builds Better Brands and Might Just Save the World! Pal gives his perspective on the presentation as an audience member.

You can watch the webinar version of the presentation here: https://brandtrust.com/explore-learn/the-power-of-human-truth-webinar-2024/

We have a special episode of Intellicast for you this week! Brian Lamar is joined by not one, but two special guests. Joining him in the co-host seat for this episode is Mary Draper, Senior Research Manager and Network Quality Officer for EMI. They are also joined by Shannon Frazier, Sample Manager for Directions Research. The three of them were all in Atlanta last week for SampleCon and the conference is the main topic of discussion among the three of them. They start with a discussion on some of the key themes of the conference this year, including specific presentations they liked. They cover topics like data quality, blockchain and the state of the industry. It is a great conversation because not only do you get it from a sample supplier and buyer perspective, but also from the perspective of long-time SampleCon attendees and a first-time attendee. The group then talks about what they would like to see at future SampleCons, both in terms of content and actions. Then the show switches gears. Brian gives us a new rant about conference badges and lanyards that I think everyone can relate to. In the final 15 minutes of the episode, Shannon and Mary discuss their shared affection for Publix, including that Mary drives to the closest location to Cincinnati to get Thanksgiving groceries. They then discuss the pitstop they took with Brian and Mike Herrel of Directions on their way to the Atlanta airport. The stop may have converted Brian to a believer. Brian had the recorder handy during the trip and was able to capture some of it. This is a great episode you don’t want to miss! Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, Jason Inderhees joins Brian Lamar and Producer Brian to discuss all the latest market research news. Kicking the episode off, the guys talk about a recent video by Lisa Wilding Brown on Bob Lederer’s podcast responding to an article by Grey Matter. They guys were happy to see Lisa standing up for the sample industry and talked about how this type of lobbying is needed. You can get more details here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/lisawildingbrown_response-to-more-dirty-secrets-of-online-activity-6770749885919625217-eIU- Next, the guys talk about InnovateMR’s new service, VisionSuite, and its various components. They then turn their attention to Imperium’s new automated respondent score called, QualityScore. Jason talks about the large number of new respondent or quality metrics that have launched recently, and how they all seem to have “score” in their name. He voices his concern that there it will be difficult from a client's perspective to understand the quality because all the scores are different. In the next segment, we had a listener submission for our ongoing talks about company names with a unique spelling. The company this time around is Vypr. Next, the guys talk about Ipsos’s 2020 results. While they reported a decline in revenue for the full year, they did see revenue growth in Q4. They guys find that this is another factor showing the recovery of the industry from 2020. In the last couple of stories, the guys talk about Annie Pettit’s new role with E2E Research and the new partnership between DISQO and Research Results. Finally, the guys talk about the new conference that Patrick Comer has launched in New Orleans, called the ResTech conference. 04/01/22 • 43 min

Welcome back to another episode of Intellicast! In today’s episode, we’re joined by Jason Inderhees to discuss the latest market research news and give a preview of the upcoming MRX conferences in April.

The guys start off by discussing Nielsen’s rejection of a $15B unsolicited bid from a private equity consortium which leads to a quick chat about how far the market research industry has come in order to be turning down offers of that size. They also take a look at Escalent’s acquisition of Mercator Advisory Group and PureProfile’s integration of Sample Ninja’s panel management solution.

To wrap up the news segment, the guys take a deep dive into the Insights Association’s year-long internship, The IDEAtor Fellowship Program, which aims to encourage greater diversity in the industry much like the MAPP program that EMI is involved with here locally.

In the next segment, the guys launch into some conference previews. April is a busy month with the IA Annual Conference in Philadelphia on April 4-6th, Quirks Chicago on April 11-12th, and IIeX in Austin on April 19-20th. EMI will be present at all three of these conferences.

Jason and Brian Lamar share the sessions they are most excited about including speakers sharing insights on asking questions about race and ethnicity, B2B sample quality, online sample fraud, and more!

Intellicast - Recapping Quirks Chicago
play

04/12/24 • 28 min

Welcome back to Intellicast! It has been a couple of weeks, but we are back with a couple of special guests. Joining Brian Peterson this week are Gabby Blados and Matthew Alexander – both of whom attended Quirks Chicago.

Kicking off the episode, the trio discuss the recent eclipse and what they did to view it. Everyone agreed that it was a once-in-a-lifetime event that they were glad they were able to see.

Next, Gabby and Matthew give a breakdown of Quirks Chicago. They talked about the overall tone of the event and how it was more lively than other conferences they had attended, especially ones just out of the COVID lockdown. Gabby mentioned how she felt a sense of camaraderie from everyone attending.

Matthew and Gabby then get into some of the major themes and topics from the conference. In what should surprise no one, AI was the biggest topic. They noticed a shift in attendees toward embracing AI, where there was much more hesitancy in previous years. Data quality was another big topic at Quirks, and sometimes, they overlapped with AI.

Gabby and Matthew talked about their favorite session, which got them both thinking about how we, as an industry, ask about household income and, with cultural changes, whether there needs to be a change. They mentioned how there could be challenges in defining household income, especially among multigenerational households, households where adult children have moved back in, or ones that have extended family living with them. This leads to a deeper conversation about how current screening questions about household income could lead to the exclusion of certain respondents because of how they interpret the definition of household income.

Gabby and Matthew then talked about their experience at a session where Johnsonville and C+R Research presented how they navigated building a new campaign to bring everyone together while avoiding pitfalls that other brands have encountered recently. Matthew pointed out that he was impressed by Johnsonville's willingness to acknowledge their initial missteps and their commitment to improve through collaboration. The conversation had Brian thinking about a movie he recently watched, Flaming Hot, that had parallels about ensuring you address cultural differences appropriately.

Finally, Matthew and Gabby tell Brian that it was announced that next year's conference was moving out of downtown Chicago to a venue closer to O'Hare airport. Matthew and Gabby talk about how, while they enjoyed the downtown location, they were excited about the potential of the new venue.

Thanks for tuning in!

Intellicast - Big Investments and AI Legislation
play

02/14/24 • 29 min

Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, Brian Peterson is joined by Jason Inderhees to talk about the latest market research and AI news!

Kicking off the episode, Jason and Brian discuss the latest Bellwether report from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), which found that market research budgets declined in Q4 2024. It also mentioned that the industry is expected to decrease by 1% over the next few years. Jason talks about how, while the overall industry may decline, pockets still experience growth, and you just need to uncover them.

Next, the guys talk about the new appointment to the Toluna board. They ponder if this accelerates Toluna’s move to target brands and offers them a full suite of solutions.

The guys then switch gears a bit and talk about a $33 million investment in Anomalo, a California-based data quality platform. They talk about how the platform works and if there are any potential applications for the market research industry.

The second half of the episode starts off with the debut of the new intro music for the AI News segment. Jason and Brian then dig into some recent AI news stories, including news that Publicis Group plans to invest 300 million Euros in AI over the next three years.

The next few AI stories aren’t market research-specific but could impact the industry and industries we serve. First, the guys talk about the recently issued executive order around AI that aims to ensure that the US leads the way and manages the risk of artificial intelligence. Brian and Jason postulate that this is probably just the start of AI legislation.

In the last story, they guys dive deep into news that New York had proposed a new law called the New York Robot Act that would impose a tax surcharge on “using technology to displace workers,” in an amount equal to taxes and fees that would have been paid on what an employee would have earned in the eliminated position. Jason and Brian are a bit on opposite sides of the debate on this one, but come out at the end seeing each other’s point of view.

Thanks for tuning in!
