What’s my story – I have about 60 subscribers on my channel, so how can I know anything about YouTube?

I’ve worked on Channels before – building one to 125,000 followers while working with a fitness and lifestyle channel out of South Korea and I didn’t know then anywhere near what I do now, and I still have the #1 video idea on that channel – one 5 minute video that brought in 4 million views

And their other social media followings aren’t as large as many of yours – you have 100s of thousands or even millions of followers on other platforms and you’re getting nothing for all of that effort

What worked over the course of 2 years?

Keyword planning and TubeBuddy to figure out the best titles
Thumbnails – to bring in more click traffic
Consistent content and engagement with the audience
Looking at the metrics and figuring out what people wanted to see
Filling in the white space – what aren’t other people doing
Pointing everything to your videos, your channel, and leveraging your other followings

YouTube is great for How – To content. Really Really. If you're getting started, 0 - 100 the How-To space will grow your channel.
Cosplay is the ultimate space for how-to, and there’s a ton of space on YouTube for great cosplay tutorials. If you know any part of building inside of cosplay, you can create short videos on building anything from foam armor to sewing costumes.

You need 1000 subscribers and 4000 hours of watch time which sounds like a lot. It is a lot, but when you think about Instagram’s requirement for 10,000 subscribers just to swipe up, maybe it’s not so much.

Subs take time, but it’s all content heading in a positive direction, helping others, and bringing them to you

Watch time is all based on attention and what people are looking for – but they are looking for Cosplay – it’s a big industry – all things surrounding it can also work for a channel.

HoCS Tip of the Day: The YouTube Algorithm in 3 minutes

Today we talk about the YouTube algorithm for about 3 minutes. Why not very long? Because my biggest tip is to try to not “game” the algorithm

YouTube is part of Google, which you may know – they have a very advanced search engine that is used for YouTube

It will always find the viewer for your content. No matter what. If you have everything in place, YouTube will always bring your video to the right viewer regardless of your size or how many videos you have. If you follow the rules for posting and are clear in what you want to do – it’s going to work for you.

There’s also a ripple effect. What you put out today may not be popular that day, but a shift in content or a single video can make a large difference in watch time and views on that video over time. It is a long game, but what’s the rush of building a following or buying one if there’s nothing in it for you? It’s all just for fun anyway, right?
