Cosplay is and should be a positive space, but we know that with anything there can excess, anxiety, competition, cancel culture, and poor behavior. We talk through the ups and downs that we have experienced ourselves and the best approach to navigating the sometimes murky characters you can encounter. Don't get us wrong - it's a small percentage of everyone out in the space, but it never hurts to be careful and look out for yourselves - and each other!

In today's episode, we're talking about Yaya Han's book and the Duality of Cosplay that she covers in the 4th section.
It goes over really how Yaya Han went from Cosplayer to Business Owner and developed partnerships, protected intellectual property, and in a short amount of time saw a lot of growth professionally.

Results not typical – but it reinforces my statements on the show – there’s no overnight success, there’s no secrets to success – it’s work, dedication, consistency, and unfortunately, a fair amount of luck overall.

It’s nice to know that the things that I’ve talked about on the show and how to go about creating a brand, and turning a hobby into something more are outlined and encouraged in Yaya’s book.

I’m very happy to see that she puts a lot of emphasis to controlling your own brand – having a website and a central place for your creations that is not just Social Media.

There’s not a lot about commerce and how to achieve this – Yaya believes in relatable content and relationship building in this industry. I do too – but there’s definitely a way to SEO your way through Cosplay if you’re providing product or service.

Importantly – she talks about the most important reasons to do this and it’s not about fame or money. It’s about solving a problem for your customers/clients. Well done.

As I’ve learned, you do not have to say yes to everyone and everything that comes along. You can pass and it’s ok. Doesn’t make you a bad person and it doesn’t mean that you will not grow as a Cosplayer or Brand if that’s what you’re doing.

This week's episode focuses on Action versus Activism in Cosplay. We're talking about this as there have been many events in 2020 that have been taken up and talked about by the Cosplay Community and many hot-button topics circulate online with Cosplayers
Though, this is not a cast that brings up any particular examples of activism online or otherwise, we are going to talk about the difference between leveraging your following to lean into activism as a means to grow your following versus taking action.
Action of itself can move you in the direction of a worthy cause and can fit very well inside your feed, your brand, your authentic self. Often, what I've observed is a 'bandwagon' effect on activism that may or may not be genuine.
There are pros and cons in around the subject, and in this cast, I discuss the differences and why I prefer action over activism as a part of the Cosplay world we're in.

Remember when Cosplay was about having fun and being expressive? Is it still? I’m not a makeup artist, nor am I great at any one skill that goes into Cosplay. But, I do find that the creators inside of the industry are very interesting and expressive with what they create. It’s something that I strive to create the time to do.

For me, production is the creative outlet. I enjoy editing the audio and video and putting everything together. Is it perfect? No, but it’s about my message and what I can share with my audience. In that way, Cosplay is the niche that I’ve chosen. You can always learn more, and develop more skills. Very appealing.

Understand that expression can be in different forms and formats. It isn’t just re-creating a movie-perfect replica of a costume and making yourself look like an exact copy from that movie. That may be an end-goal. In creating, you may find yourself, or what you truly want to do with your free time or all of your time – expression often leads to passion or shows others what your passion is.

It’s about messaging, focus, and being clear on what you do. It’s art. Creators are sometimes looked at as impractical or unproductive, but it’s what you felt you wanted or needed to do – and you shared that with others. Nothing wrong with that – whether it’s a message, what you feel strong about, or if it is less straight-forward – you realize something else in creating or re-creating a fandom building a cosplay.

What’s my story – I have about 60 subscribers on my channel, so how can I know anything about YouTube?

I’ve worked on Channels before – building one to 125,000 followers while working with a fitness and lifestyle channel out of South Korea and I didn’t know then anywhere near what I do now, and I still have the #1 video idea on that channel – one 5 minute video that brought in 4 million views

And their other social media followings aren’t as large as many of yours – you have 100s of thousands or even millions of followers on other platforms and you’re getting nothing for all of that effort

What worked over the course of 2 years?

Keyword planning and TubeBuddy to figure out the best titles
Thumbnails – to bring in more click traffic
Consistent content and engagement with the audience
Looking at the metrics and figuring out what people wanted to see
Filling in the white space – what aren’t other people doing
Pointing everything to your videos, your channel, and leveraging your other followings

ReBirth is Next Week!
Thanks so much to everyone who participated in the first give away and for all of the support you've provided for the cast.

Why ReBirth? Am I rebooting the cast? Yes and no. I have a few thousand downloads and 10s of thousands of impressions to see what you liked and what you didn’t.

You really want to know more about monetization. You want to see more from Cosplayers.

We’re going to work hard to add more value. Going deeper on topics and leading you into a better understanding of the online and Con-space that is Cosplay. Greater insight. More fun. More interaction. Shorter season. Better focus.

There will be some surprises along the way and more consistent programming...which also means larger investments in my time and what it takes to create anything.

We’ll be running officially from September 3rd to March 25th with content, which is still 7 months.

After that – YouTube continues. Twitch is coming soon, and so is the website. Very excited to continue to create, and to continue to build more with you in this space.

You've got the basics, and you've figured out posting, and how to be patient because everyone starts at zero, but now what? Where do you go from here?
Instagram is the starting point, and really you don't have to start here, but for the industry of Cosplay, there may be only a few other platforms as free and as versatile for what you do. Instagram can scale your stories/snaps, brand, offers, long and short form video, point to other platforms, and act as a blog ALL in ONE SPACE. Cool.
But the algorithm gets in the way, and there's an issue with attention. Hopefully this short part three episode will help you figure out the path that's right for you so you can get the most out of Instagram and figure out how to scale and produce offers for your following that make sense for your goals as a Cosplayer.
Is it just for fun, or is there more to what you're doing - modeling, acting, writing, film, photography, networking, or building a brand in media? There are a lot of options for your hobby that can turn it into a way to make money and help others!

Being relatable, authentic, and true to yourself - it's what there is inside of Cosplay. Pick what resonates with you, not what you believe needs to be promoted based on pop culture and current trends. That's great if you're an influencer, but what's your goal?

Pop Cosplay keeps moving on – you don’t have to. You can take this in any direction you want.
