Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future. While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced. Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you. ‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’

Punchdrunk Enrichment is a charity creating transformational theatre for education, community and family audiences. Their immersive experiences for schools are designed to inspire and engage the imagination, inviting pupils and teachers on an adventure with a lasting impact. I'm joined by Peter Higgin - Artistic Director and joint CEO.

Peter has been involved with Punchdrunk for his entire professional career. In 2000 he graduated from Exeter University and went on to become a founding member of Punchdrunk. He was pivotal in establishing the company’s early work during their rise to critical acclaim and global success.

In 2008 he co-founded Punchdrunk Enrichment and led the development of Punchdrunk’s signature practice in community and educational settings. Since 2016, he has been joint CEO of Punchdrunk’s charitable arm, and in 2021, as the charity rebranded as Punchdrunk Enrichment, Peter became Artistic Director.

Peter’s early work for Punchdrunk Enrichment focused on primary educational settings. Working with a core team of Punchdrunk creatives, these projects established a formula for the company’s practice and importantly uncovered and demonstrated a need for this type of intervention.

Since these early beginnings Peter has led on all of the company’s artistic activity spanning family shows, participatory performances, ambitious R&D experiments in digital technology and international collaborations.

Peter has a powerful belief in the transformative power of engaging with the arts and creativity. He believes in the power of imagination as one of our greatest tools and has witnessed how access to immersive experiences can unlock our innate creativity.

Failure Free Reading is an effective reading intervention for our students who have been resistant to phonics-based reading instruction.

Dr. Joe Lockavitch, a former classroom teacher, school psychologist, university professor, special education director, applied reading researcher, is the author and developer of: The Failure Free Reading Program, Don’t Close the Book on Your Not-Yet Readers, Joseph’s Readers Talking Software for Non-Readers, Verbal Master-An Accelerated Vocabulary Program, Life Skills – A School to Career Language Literacy Intervention and The Test of Lateral Awareness and Directionality.

A noted speaker who is listed in Outstanding Teachers in Exceptional Education, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Dr. Joe has spent the past thirty years training tens of thousands of teachers, parents, and administrators across the nation on how to meet the unique needs of students with chronic reading failure – nonreaders included.

Dr. Joe has been featured on the PBS NewsHour and mentioned on national radio shows such as: Tom Joyner, Dr. Laura, Mike Gallegher and Michael Medvid. Dr. Lockavitch holds a Doctor of Education from Boston University and a Master of Science in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut. He is currently the President of Failure Free Reading - an educational publishing and software development firm housed in Concord North Carolina.

Failure Free Reading which has over two million hours of direct student instruction – both inperson and through distance learning – has been used by thousands of teachers to serve tens of thousands of students in schools across the nation. His current client list includes New York City, Washington DC, Broward County, Florida, Niagara Falls, NY, Laredo, Tx, Bristol, TN and many more.

For over 30 years, Dr. Joe has been helping school districts and parents across the nation turn their nonreaders into readers - quickly, easily and within budget. Dr. Joe specializes in training teachers, parents, and volunteers in accelerating the vocabulary, comprehension, expressive fluency, and confidence of chronically failing students of all ages.

Dr. Joe’s philosophy is quite simple: we are underestimating the reading potential of chronically failing students. The enemy is not the student, parent, teacher, or administrator. The real enemy is the instructional approach and accompanying materials. Change that approach and you will change the performance outcomes.

Voice 21 is the UK’s oracy education charity. They work with schools to transform the learning and life chances of young people through talk. They campaign for oracy to have a higher status in the education system.

Oracy skills are vital to success in school and in life. And yet, for many children, especially those growing up in poverty, opportunities to develop these vital skills are missed. Only a minority of schools have consistent, coherent or adequately resourced provision to develop these skills in their students.

Voice 21's sustained approach weaves oracy into a school’s DNA, ensuring current and future students have access to a high-quality oracy education. This means that students in Voice 21 Oracy Schools, including those who would otherwise miss out, develop the oracy skills they need for success in school and in life.

Amy Gaunt is Director of Learning and Impact at Voice 21. Amy joined the charity's founding leadership team in 2016 and has supported its growth from one London school to a network of nearly 1000 schools across the UK. She has developed Voice 21's approach to oracy education, teacher development and school improvement and has led the development of their impact function. She is co-author of Transform Teaching and Learning through Talk: the Oracy Imperative and Voice 21's Oracy Benchmarks. Before joining Voice 21, Amy was a primary teacher, both in London and internationally.

In this solo show Mark shares his thoughts and experience of what learning has really meant during lockdown.

It seems amazing that governments are declaring children need to catchup with missed work. How can there be no allowance for the world shutting down? Why does life have to look the same as before?

Surely if nothing else recent events have shown us all that life has to reflect what is happening to and for us?

You wouldn't expect someone to run a race with a broken leg you would reframe the expectations and goals. Let's take this opportunity to do the same for education.

The Literacy Lab Appoints Johnathon Hines as the First National Education Ambassador for its Leading Men Fellowship. Georgia’s first Black male Pre-K Teacher of the Year hopes to inspire other young Black men to pursue teaching as a career.

The Literacy Lab is a national non-profit organization that provides students – in communities experiencing racial and/or economic inequities – with evidence-based, culturally responsive literacy instruction as preparation for academic, professional, and personal success. The Literacy Lab partners with school districts to help close the literacy gap largely by embedding full-time, rigorously trained tutors in early childhood centers and elementary schools.

The Literacy Lab’s Leading Men Fellowship creates opportunities for young men of color and increases representation in the field of education. Leading Men Fellows are young men of color who have recently graduated from high school and participate in a year-long, residency-style experience in which they provide evidence-based literacy support to pre-kindergarten students while receiving robust coaching and professional development and gaining valuable experience.

In this episode I chat to Johnathan Hines and Ivan Douglas, National Director of the Leading Men Fellowship.

Reid’s story begins at his own high school, where his life began to diverge from that of his best friend Jamie as soon as he enrolled in advanced classes across the hall. After graduation, the gap widened as Reid pursued an elite degree studying educational opportunity in America.

In an attempt to close the opportunity gap between students like him and Jamie, Reid took a job as a teacher at Battery Creek High, a severely under-resourced school in South Carolina where students were flunking out of their classes not because they were incapable, but because the coursework was too easy.

Reid and a team of teachers and students rallied to increase enrollment in the advanced track for those who didn’t fit the honor student mold. In one year, the program doubled to become the largest provider in the state, and performance on the college-level tests increased by 20%.

Wanting to effect change on a larger scale, Reid founded Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS) to find and help students all over the country who have been overlooked, discouraged, or are otherwise missing from higher-level learning opportunities.

Backed by new research and original survey data of millions of teachers and students across the country, his forthcoming book THE KID ACROSS THE HALL: The Fight for Opportunity in Our Schools (Redwood Press/Stanford University Press; September 5) vividly chronicles Reid’s triumphs, setbacks, and insights as he learned firsthand that the hard task of educational reform will take much more than the Hollywood myth of the well-intentioned teacher who saves the day.
