I have been a Girl Scout since Kindergarten, and since I finished my Gold Award project I will become a Lifetime Girl Scout. Whenever I think about community, I think about Girl Scouts not only because of my troop but also because of how much I have been taught to notice what is happening locally and engage. I was part of Girl Scouts’ national advisory board also known as G-Team from early 2019 to late 2020 where I did work on the GSUSA website, mental health programming, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. I also worked as a Media Star for Girl Scouts of Colorado. I am currently going to school at Pomona College where I will major in psychology because I hope to be a research psychologist when I grow up.

Giovanna Quevedo was inspired to write, “A Kid’s Guide to Radiation Therapy,” after her mother was diagnosed with cancer and prescribed radiation therapy as treatment. Her mother’s experience made her wonder how pediatric patients cope with their cancer treatment. While researching educational materials about cancer, she failed to find age-appropriate resources for pediatric radiation patients and she wanted to change that. Over the course of two years, Giovanna researched, wrote, self-published, and donated her book. Today, her bilingual children’s book is available through partnerships with twelve leading hospitals and cancer organizations across the globe which reach an estimated 45,000 people annually. Giovanna is a University Honors student and President’s Scholar studying Nutritional Science and Chemistry with the goal of working in healthcare. After earning her Gold Award, she represented Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles as their inaugural Gold Award Scholarship recipient and in the 2022 Tournament of Roses Troop. She loves Girl Scout camp and works as a lifeguard and boating instructor for a camp in her council. Giovanna hopes her project will continue to reach children and families in need as they embark on their journey to healing.
